    3. Hi all. This is something I really should already know but am not sure of and can't find much down here in Lake Charles that tells me the answer. Is Good Hope Baptist Church and cemetery in Union Co AR or is it in Union Parish? I know it is very close to the state/parish/county line but don't really know for sure. A bunch of my hubby's Poole folks are buried there. Thanks, Jan

    1. WASSON - EVANS - GILMORE
    2. Louis Taunton
    3. Good evening all - This list is the greatest - although I do not always know the folks, it is always interesting reading. The WASSON researcher - Smail Mrs. Mantel Clay, P. O. Box 415, Louisville, MS 39339. She has a WASSON book printed by someone in ARK or TEXAS. There are WASSONS in Attala County, MS. Their reunion is held each year second Sunday in June at Shady Grove Methodist Church. If the Louisiana WASSONS are connected, she will be able to tell you. EVANS - In the 1870 Union Parish Census - 232-232: EVANS, John S or L - 48 - Male - White - Famer - Born in GA; Martha A. EVANS - 51 - Female - White - Born in GA; Benjamin - 12 - Born in AL; George T. - 10 = Born in ALA. Now does anyone know who Martha A. was prior to her marriage to John S. EVANS? They are enumerated next to 233 - GILMORE, Lucinda - age 41 - House keeper - Born in GA and her children. Are the EVANS related to the GILMORES? Does anyone know the connection? In my notes from the 1950s - Evans Cemetery: Martha - wife of G. L. or G. C. EVANS - died Nov 1871 - age 56 years. John L. G. EVANS - died 5 may 187 - age 56 years. Bennie GILMORE - son of C. (?) A. and Carrie GILMORE - died 10 Aug 1876. Carrie - wife of R. A. GILMORE - died July 1872. I have no idea where I got these notes - have not worked on this line since 1950s. Can anyone help on this? GRAY - I have a Frances MILLER, sister to above Lucinda MILLER GILMORE, marrying a GRAY. Does this connect with any of the GRAYS of Union Parish, LA. I think they were married in Early County, GA. Can someone give Candace the email of Tim Hudson, kinsman of the late Mr. Nolan. She mistakenly thought that I was the one who had it. Appreciate it. Again, thank everyone for being such great people. I always look forward to reading this list every night. Louis

I appreciate any help. > Hi Louis, I have EVANS people because I discovered my g-grandmother was the dau of Susanna EVANS, who was dau of Abel Edward EVANS. They came from AL & MS to LA, I am not aware of them in Union Par, mostly they were in Morehouse, but who knows?? Here's a family group sheet on Abel E. EVANS: Name: Abel Edward EVANS Birth: 10 Nov 1798 Charleston Dist, now Charleston, SC Death: 29 Jul 1878 Bastrop, Morehouse Parish, LA Burial: Old Catholic Cem, Bastrop, Morehouse, LA Father: Col. Thomas EVANS 4th (~1743-1800) Mother: Elizabeth HODGES (~1752-1798) Misc. Notes Birth: Evans family records; probate of fathers estate in 1802. Marriage: Extracted marriage record; newspaper record(s); family records. : "The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research", Vol I, No.1 Winter 1973, page 117. Death: Family records; tombstone. Further information on him came from "The Turpin Family, Before and After Grabault, Louisiana" compiled by John Lewis Davidson, 1995; "Abel and Martha Evans moved from Claiborne county, MS to Morehouse Parish, LA in the middle of the 19th Century. They purchased land about three or four miles east of Bastrop on the Grabault Road . . The hill on which this residence was located was called Evans Hill - but is now generally known as Grabault Hill." Also, it said "Abel and Martha Mandeville Evans are buried in the Old City Cemetery in Bastrop." Further, this same source stated, "Lelia Turpin Davidson recalled her great-grandfather Abel very clearly. She said he was a huge man with a flowing mane of long white hair. He rode a large white horse and wore a long cape which hung in great folds from his broad shoulders. He was 80 when he died." Information from family groups sheets sent me by Tom Montgomery of Vista, CA, said, "Abel Edward Evans was just two years old when his father died in 1800. His mother was 53 years old at the time of his birth, and as she died some ten days later, it can be assumed she died as a retult of his birth. Regardless, Abel never knew his parents and was raised by his brothers and sisters. He attended boarding schools for most of his early years, starting as early as 1804 - his father's estate has a record of several payments being paid with the notation of 'this sume for board of Abel'. At some point, he began school in Mobile AL, residing with Eliza Evans Battle, thought to be a dau of his uncle, Col. Thomas Evans. <removed some info here> We do not know how Abel and Martha met, but the Mandeville family home was only a short distance to the west of his brother, Col. Thomas Evans (in SC) and most likely Abel had known Martha for many years. We also do not know why both of Col. Evans' daus marrie din AL, but it was prob because they ahd attended school in Mobile. The Mobile area had a substantial number of the Evans family and the name was prominent during this period. <snip> There was nothing really to keep him in SC and prob he and Martha intended from the beginning to return to AL where he had made his home. It is thought that his bro-in-law, David Mandeville, made the treck west with them; we know that David remained in Camden (Wilcox Co), began his family in 1839, and all of his children were born in Camden. On 1 Jun 1837, Abel and martha sold her interest in the Mandeville properties, . .prob about this time Abel decided to continue on west and eventually ended up in Morehouse Parish, LA, where he made his final home." 2. Hi! I'm new to the Union Parish mailing list and thought I'd give my folks names. My Antley line comes from James Augustus Antley and Ellen Day Antley. I have quite a bit of info on the Antleys I would like to share with anyone else searching this line. James Augustus father was Jacob Antley from Orangeburge Co., SC and recent info I acquired from Clarke Co AL would suggest his mother was Mary Gill. Would like any info you may have on the Guice/Nolan and Days. Ellen Days parents were Peter and Eliza Shultz Day. My other g-grandparents from Union Parish were Joe and Lucy Guice Nolan. I am just beginning to search these last three lines and would appreciate any info anyone would share! They all lived in the Point or Downsville areas. Thanks Debi Antley Murphy

    3. Addie Mae, I was hoping that the time frame would be between 1900-1940 or so, because I might have an explanation. My Grandparents were married in 1933 in Bernice, in a gas station. The reason why is because that was where the J.P. hung out. If you wanted him you had to go find him! The J.P. was named FUTCH. It seems that Mr.. Futch was quite a character and maybe liked the 'shine' abit. Well, anyway it seems that he was also forgetful about returning marriage license to be recorded. I was able to get the details from my grandmother's bible and a witness, so I know they were married, when they were married and by whom. I even know the witnesses, but I have never found a record. It seems that after Mr.. Futch died, while cleaning out his belonging, his son (who is now a lawyer in Houston) came across some old records. The thing is I'm not sure what was done with them, if they were ever turned over and recorded, or if they just figured that it had been so long there was no point. Anyway I was wondering if maybe your records were in there with mine!!! I will however keep an eye out and try to help you. Gina

    3. Good evening everyone: Was looking through my 1950s notes on the GILMORES and seems there was a connection between them and the EVANS. Supposedly, (note from 1950s of mine) there is an EVANS Cemetery with a few graves somewhere around Oakland. It is not in the 4 Volumes of Union Parish Cemetery Records by Mr. Nolan. Does anyone know where it is located? Or is anyone working on the EVANS Family? I appreciate any help. As soon as I clear my desk will post my family from Henry FARRAR, Jr. forward - Was a brother of Robert F. Farrar. Have a copy of the FARRAR Family Bible of the brother of Henry FARRAR, Sr. of Perry County, ALA as his brother's ancestors moved to Kemper (Next to Winston where I live) County, MS. Happened upon them by the grace of God. Also, does any of the Farrar descendants know for sure what happened to Henry Farrar, Jr. I have heard at least a dozen tales - everything from him running off from his family to he went back to Perry County, AL to kill the sheriff who evidently was in with Henry Farrar, Sr's. second wife and cheated the children by the first marriage out of their inheritance. Any stories would be appreciated. Thanks. Louis

Box 400 Louisville, Miss. 39339 is searching for the parents of John Tillman Taunton who was born in 1820 in Georgia. In 1844 John married Mary "Polly" Brown daughter of Jesse and Mary Brown in Pike Co. Ala. John and Mary were the parents of 8 children most of whom settled in Union Parish and Union Co. Ark. area. The children then married into the Gilmore, Harper, Toler, Wood , Etheridge, Cobb and Poole families. The estate, settled in Union Parish mentions the family Bible and Louis would like to find the descendant who owns the Bible.
