    1. Obits for El Dorado, Union, Arkansas
    2. Frankie
    3. Hi, A few weeks ago a site was listed for accessing obits for El Dorado, Arkansas. I wasn't interested then, but now my husband's aunt and Great Aunt have passed away. His mother just began Chemotherapy yesterday and I don't want to bother her with sending us copies of the obits. Is there a site I can go to? Both deaths took place this month. Joyce Marie Franks was in her sixties, and Ethel Payne Burgess would have been 104 this coming Monday. Any help will be appreciated. I have their death dates, but the obits would be nice, especially for Aunt Ethel. TIA, Frankie (Linda DeFrees Franks) Soda Springs, ID 83276 [email protected]

    1. Union Parish
    2. I guess you could call the beautiful rolling hills and wooded areas of Union Parish the BOONIES. But it sure is a place to make the heart grow warm. As I sit here tonight thinking of Thanksgiving tomorrow it's easy to go back 30-35 years and find myself sitting on the front porch of my MaMaw and PaPaw Antley's house in Point. For those of you who have never been to Point, it's really just a curve in the road with a store, churchs, couple of cemetery's and a few houses. Gosh, I can smell all that food cookin coming through the screen door. The old wringer washing machine is sitting off to one corner of the porch waiting for Saturday. Hangin on the side wall is the big old washtub she'd bring in and pour buckets and buckets of hot water into for us to bath. If you listen real close you can hear the mantel clock that PaPaw wound every Saturday night. The key was in a little drawer inside the clocks door. Everything is so quiet you can hear a car coming from miles down the road. As it comes in front of the house they slow, blow the horn and wave. The only people who didn't weren't from around there. On the other end of the porch sits the well with the old wooden water bucket and dipper sitting on top just waiting for somebody to lower it down and get the coldest and best water you've ever tasted. It gets awfully hot in Louisiana in July and August and that water sure did hit the spot. If I close my eyes I can see myself walking down the porch steps and turning around the corner of the house. There sits the out house down through a few trees. If it's still day light I could even look at the Sears Roebuck catolog while attendin to business. Listen real close and you can hear MaMaw working the hand pump in the kitchen drawing water in a pan to wash dishes. I can go around the back of the house and look in the screen door and there she is getting the biscuits out of the oven. There's two meats and a gillion vegetables on the table from her garden. Hanging on the wall is an old mirror with PaPaw's razor sharpening strap beside it. Just as I hear another car coming she's pouring the tea in glasses. This car stops and PaPaw comes through the front door that's placed exactly even with the back for a breeze to go through. He'll wash his hands for supper in a old battered tin bowl and dry em with a towel hanging from a nail. MaMaw won't sit to eat until everybody is served. Not long after dark we'll take a trip to the out house with a flash light then climb into one of the five beds in that two bedroom house. There's one double bed in the back of the living room, three in the main bedroom and one small one in the back room. If it's cold weather you'll be weighted down by the mounds of quilts on the bed. It's so quiet that you can almost hear the water rippling miles away on D'arbonne! Daylight finds breakfast already on the table and PaPaw pouring his coffee into the saucer to cool it. Oh yes, Union Parish is very rural. My grandparents got there indoor bathroom in the mid 70's and sold the old out house to a neighbor down the road. It was much better than the one they had. My heart and gut grows heavy thinking of all that's lost to us now. So many of our old folks are gone as is their way of life. Excuse the nostalgia today but it seems appropriate as we give Thanks to also thank those who came before us. And even as those are sweet sweet memories to me I have to also give thanks for the many things I have that make my life so sooo much easier than my ancestors. I had a beautiful nephew born yesterday and he'll never know anything of their way of life except my memories. As I Thank God for him tomorrow I will also pledge to tell him about our folks that paved the way for him. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! ^j^ Debi Antley Murphy

    3. Have any of y'all heard of Edna Liggin's home page. She was a native of Shiloh and was employed by the Union Parish Public Library. During her life, she wrote many brief biographies of area families. I was in Bernice today doing some genealogy and heard about her homepage (actually I think a child or grandchild is responsible for this, Mrs. Liggin died some years ago). I've tried www.ednaliggin.com and done a yahoo search but have had no luck. Any help would be appreciated!! Fred [email protected]

    1. Union Reunion
    2. Gina Sherrard
    3. I have been reading with great interest about this reunion, it sounds great!!! I do have a few things to throw into the ring. I'm not sure how many of you have ever been there but I can tell you that you DO NOT want to have this thing any later than May. It is very uncomfortable for people who aren't used to it. I must also tell you that many of the cemeteries and churches are in the BOONIES. If you don't know there you are going you can find yourself very lost. I am fortunate that my family lives in Spearsville so I don't have to worry about lodging, but it is closer to ElDorado than to Ruston from Spearsville. ElDorado has a nice library if you can get there a day early, also Ruston has a good library. I also here the fried fish place in Spearsville mentioned. It is called Bonnie's and it is very good, my sister works there. The trouble with that is they will only be able to seat about 50 people as it is in the back of a convenience store. I will also warn everyone to bring antihistamines -- even if you think you don't have allergies. Trust me you will!!! I'm not trying to be a wet blanket, really. I just wanted to let you know about a few things. The people who live there will give you the shirt of their back. It is possible that some of the families at Shiloh Church,or First Baptist Church would open there homes. The pastor at Shiloh is named Pate. The pastor at First Baptist Church is Steve Dominy. I hope I haven't offended anyone. Please discuss. Gina

    1. Good News/ and response to Roy and to Mary Margaret's response
    2. Karen Kueteman
    3. First of all, I just realized I told my Mabry list, but forgot to tell you guys - life has been kind of topsy-turvy here. I am getting married in a few weeks and moving to Illinois. (I know, I know - but I'll never actually BECOME a yankee!!!) <g> So I may be unsubscribed for a few weeks, but I'll be back after the first of the year. mmm, mmm Mary Margaret - black eyed peas and hot water cornbread, liberally dosed with vinegar which has sat over Louisiana sport peppers for a long, long time, of course!!! But, remember, this "do" is being put together by a bunch of people who don't actually live in Union Parish. I have put events like this together before, and to pull off a big deal would take a group of people in place and spending hours contacting all the companies that might contribute, and I think it is beyond the scope of what we are capable of at this point in time. I think a loosely structured event spanning both Saturday and Sunday, with people feeling free to come and go at will during those two days is what we need for this first outing. I would love for it to be the weekend of May 22, 23. I especially want to go to that gospel sing on Saturday night. We can organize our own cemetery tour. No biggie. Just send in your requests for which cemeteries, we'll get a map, and go after it. I am sad to report that if we choose that weekend, cousin Gaylon cannot make it, but if we keep trying to find a weekend everyone can make it, we may never come up with the right one. The idea of having it catered by the firm in Ruston sounds good, the sending in the money ahead for that is the best way to do it. Raiding KFC and Sam's would be good, but don't want anybody stuck for a bill because some don't show up. We could do the catering on one day, and KFC the next, and everybody could be on their own for breakfast and supper. We can do our own "swapping" - everybody just bring all your Union Parish stuff. I will see what I can do in the next few months about the copier situation. We may have to just descend on the local Kinko's en masse. I am leaving the Friday after Thanksgiving for a week in Carbondale to firm up wedding plans, then will be back here on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving until about the 14th or 15th of Dec. Then will be completely offline until about Jan 16th. Later, Karen

    3. Morning all, MARY MARGARET!!! If you shelled the peas last night, I got cornbread in the oven!!! Be right over with my cornbread! YUM!! Both times are ok with me. If we decide early enough (by Dec 15) that will give us plenty of time to get it on our calendars. I kinda like the idea of a park, but any place would be fine with me. I DO like the idea of having the swap meet this time too for the very reason that Mary Margaret stated. This may be the only chance that some of us may have to make the trip. I think with a little pre planning we can use this list to correspond and let folks know what we have and can bring. This will also give us an idea of how many copies of what we need to bring. I don't think anything elaborate needs to be done, cause we can pretty much "swap" our info right here on the list. Another thing that might be a good idea is to put a notice in La Roots. Maybe we can get Randy to do that for us. I can also ask Marie Wise to put a notice in her syndicated newspaper column. This would be with y'alls approval, of course. Mary Margaret, I'm walking out the door with the cornbread now, so look for me in a little while! ;o) Jan At 09:26 PM 11/22/1998 -0600, [email protected] wrote: >For Roy---I have been wondering what happened to everyone, then decided >that football games, Thanksgiving, etc. must be the reason. 2. For Roy---I have been wondering what happened to everyone, then decided that football games, Thanksgiving, etc. must be the reason. I talked to Morelle not long ago and they are just waiting on some of us to tell them what to do. As to the location, another cousin mentioned Lincoln Park on Hwy 33 about 5 miles out of Ruston. May and Shiloh has my vote. Our famnily had a reunion about 5 years ago and they had it catered by a firm out of Ruston. It was a barbecue type of thing and very satisfactory. We all RSVP'd and sent our fee, several weeks ahead of time, so there was not a problem with collecting or paying for the service. I also think that we should have a swap meet with this...For some of us, it may be the only one we could attend and if we set it up right, we could arrive and set up on Friday if possible and then have all of Saturday for the swap meet, visiting, meeting new cousins and pigging out on whatever is decided on. As a child, and visiting UP, I remember that every house had a bowl of peas on the table everyday....I also remember it was my job to go to the pea patch, pick the peas, shell them each evening to be cooked early the next morning. 1. Union Reunion '99
    2. Have been away for almost three weeks, mostly traveling on business. Did do a camp training for Girl Scouts one weekend to learn the GS way of camping. It sure was a lot easier when I was a Boy Scout! Got the dates on the Shiloh celebration. Sunday, May 23rd is the main focus of the celebration. On Saturday evening, May 22nd, they'll have a gospel singing. In terms of where to hold the reunion, if held on the same weekend as Shiloh's celebration, Shiloh's fellowship hall will be out. I'm pretty sure that they will be getting ready for their own affair. Possible alternative locations (keeping in mind the need to plan for rain) would be First Baptist Farmerville, First Baptist Bernice, Bernice High School's cafeteria, Farmerville High's cafeteria. Ruston would be next closest town, leaving the Holiday Inn as a possibility. I would prefer, though, to keep it in the parish. Potluck can be a issue. But there are fried chicken places in Farmerville, potato salad, salad, etc. can be bought in bulk at Sam's in Monroe, and desserts generally travel well. Depending on number attending, I could pick up plates, utensils, napkins and cups at Sam's. At our family reunions, I do this and pass the hat for reimbursement. Any extra goes to a cemetery upkeep fund. >From reading the few replies received, it seems we may want to keep this first one simple and the agenda loose. No reason we can't bring our stuff and share; just leave off the "fluff" of full blown swap meet. We still need a date--any suggestions. I plan to attend the Shiloh celebration so will be there that weekend. Our Mary Edmonds Lee family reunion will probably be the weekend of July 17th. Am leaving to go to Louisiana to visit my parents for the Thanksgiving holidays. We'll need everyone's input so that dates can be set. Let's set December 15th as the decision date, okay? Looking forward to hearing from everyone. Roy Austin
