Hope everyone survived the holidays and is ready to get back down to business. I just returned from a rewarding trip to North Carolina. I've been travelling to Charlotte nearly every other week for several months for business. This past week, I decided to take a few days vacation in conjunction with the trip and go "hunting" in my ancestral lands of Moore and Lee County, NC. I was able to locate the graves of my gr-gr-gr-grandparents, Alexander and Catherine McIntosh, and prove the name of my gr-gr-grandfather, Roderick McIntosh--the father of Joseph Roderick McIntosh. Joseph Roderick was the father of my gr-grandfather, John McIntosh, who inturn was the father of my grandmother, Susie McIntosh (a sister of Clifton McIntosh, former Bernice mayor). Alexander and Catherine were both natives of Scotland, which excited me even more, because now (other than my Feazel ancestors) I have a known overseas connection. Now for some updated suggestions: Reunion Steering Committee: We need a few volunteers who are willing to make decisions for the group as a whole. I suggest five or six. These can stay in contact with each other and take necessary actions on short notice without having to wait on responses from the entire list. I'll volunteer for one of the slots--any other takers? Sorry, no cash, but you will feel really good when it is over. Send your name, email address, snail mail address and phone number with best times to call. Date--I am assuming that May 31st is an "approved" date. I've only seen a couple of responses. If so, who can volunteer to call the Shiloh pastor to arrange the use of the fellowship hall? Let me know if I need to do this. Registration fee--How does $5 per family sound. This will cover the cost of mailing, paper goods, names tags, etc. If we do end up with any left over, we can donate it. Keeper of the cash--I nominate Sue Linder since she is putting together the registration form. Haven't asked Sue if she wants the job--does any one else want it? Copiers--We should have at least 2 on hand. These would be of the desktop variety. Perhaps one of the local attorneys/CPAs/insurance agents have one they would lend us for the day. That was what was done at the Bibb County swap meet. We supply the paper and replacement toner. Costs are recovered by charging 10 cents per copy. Any extra gets donated. Maybe I'll finally breakdown and buy one for my own use. As much as I spend at Kinkos I could afford it. Meal--potluck sounds good. Shiloh has a pretty good kitchen with stove and microwave (for warming) and sink for cleaning up. Children/spouse activities--If they don't do genealogy, what's the use of bringing them along?? Just kidding!!!! There could horseshoes (I have a set with stakes). They could possibly go fishing at the Darbonne State Park--check on fishing license requirements. The Depot museum in Bernice may be open. Perhaps as a break in the early afternoon, we could have one speaker to give a short talk. Anyone up to it or know of a local historian that would do it? Shouldn't be for more than 30 minutes. The final decisions need to be made rather quickly in order the get the publicity out. Maradee has volunteered to design a flyer and she will need to know what to include. I've forgotten who the list owner is. Can someone send me his/her email address so that I can correspond offline? If anyone wants to call me, my phone number is (281) 463-4312. Best time to catch me is between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (Central). Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Roy Austin
so, thought I would pass on to you ......mary margaret sel;ig-trahan [email protected]
I would like to connect with cousins of Union Parish on the following families: Yelverton Octavius Stanley WEBSTER married Elizabeth KEY (1800s) Benjamin Franklin, William Lane, Robert, Jethro, JOHNSON (1850s -) Alexander T., William Alexander, Willis Jethro, Coleman TUCKER (1870s- ). I am currently working with Mary Margaret Trahan and Elaine Heard Elliott. These names may be familiar with many of you. Pat
I will be unable to attend but is there a way I can get information? If Mary Margaret Trahan attends, she will be able to browse for me but if not, I truly want to connect with my Union Parish cousins. Pat Thummel of Nashville, IN
Pat: We are planning to put the information on the web and will probably will also make printed copies available. I guess the cost if any will depend on the demand and if we decide to generate a donation to support the local library, etc. I will add an introduction page that gives background information i.e., an general invitation to attend the reunion and/or contribute to the database. This is the beauty of the web. We can all stay in touch and exchange information even if we can't make it to the reunion. Just a brief note to thank everyone who took time to answer my query about the location of Tremont, LA. Thanks to everyone this lady can now identify the Winn Parish on the copy of the original application for a Social Security Card. Again, I appreciate it. Everyone was super great and so very helpful. Louis
Please check out the draft form and provide comments. I have not gotten the form to actually enter data in the database yet, but I am working on it. Just type the following URL in your browser and sign in. <http://129.119.39.10/UnionReunionadd.html> name: union password: reunion We need to decide on the date, fee(s), etc. and who is going to be responsible for handling the money. Preferably the forms can be filled out on the web and then the first page printed and submitted by mail with payment. Let me know of anything else that needs to be on the form. With this information we will be able to produce name tags, a directory of those attending, and a nice data file for the LAUnion-L web site. The space for family stories, histories, events, recipes will handle a long text so hopefully everyone will contribute. We also need a disclaimer/permission statement. Any suggestions on wording? "I am providing the following genealogical information to be used by all genealogical researchers. The information is to be shared freely and is not for profit or commercial use. The information may be posted on the LAunion-L web site or distributed in printed form as a product of the 1999 Union Reunion organized by members of the LAunion-L discussion list." Sue
There is a friend of mine looking for which Parish that the community of Tremont, LA was in. I think Winn Parish. Can anyone help on this? If my email bounces - email me at [email protected] - the ice storm may be over here, but it has played the dickens with everything - from broke limbs, no electricity, messed up computer servers and now we are in the deepfreeze of the South - supposed to go to 14-16 tonight. Thank the Lord for gas heat! Louis
Hi I'm trying to locate a marriage record for my ancestors. They were Wiley Hines and Catherine Summerlin. married abt. 1840/1850. They were living in Union parish a few years after this but I'm not positive that they were there at the time of the marriage. I contacted the Union parish clerk and was told that there was no record was there. Lincoln parish only goes back to 1870 or so. I don't find a list for Claiborne parish. Anyone that can help, thanks a lot. MT

His obituary states that he was born, August 20,1861 in Farmerville, LA. He spent his childhood and early manhood in and around Farmerville, attending public schools there. He moved to Hensley, AR then later married Mary Eugenia Anderson on October 10,1887 in Farmerville. I have found his marriage record in book 7, Union Parish, LA. Mary Eugenia was the oldest daughter of James Matthew Anderson and Sarah "Sallie" Pleasant of Marion, LA. I have quite a bit of information on the Anderson, Pleasant, Moore, and Tubb families which I would be happy to share. The W.R.Smith family moved from Hensley,AR to Rison, AR, to Eagle Mills, AR, and then to Camden, AR. around 1896, where he was in the meat business. He died October 17,1929 and was buried in Camden. Any leads as to W.R.Smith's parents or family would be appreciated. --------------4999C631BA75FAE8F5BFC339--
My husband's family lives in ElDorado, Union, Arkansas. We will be trying to come down and visit this summer. Might even want to attend the Union Reunion, but school gets out May 28 or 29, whichever one is a Friday. So, if you do it in May, there is no way we could get there. It is a 3 day drive to El Dorado from here. NOt sure when vacation is, but thought that for those who have kids in school, and with school ending either the last week in May or first week in June, they wouldn't be able to attend earlier than 2nd week of June. Just a thought.
The weekend of May 29-30 is fine with me. Shiloh church or Bernice clubhouse both sound like good places. Like all the suggestions.. I do wonder, tho, how we would get copy machines. It would be nice to have a computer where one could make copies of gedcom files, etc. Liked your idea about t-shirts and Maradee's willingness to design something. I've seen the webpage she did for in honor of her mother and was impressed. I think she could probably turn out something neat. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and hope there are some folks out there doing research on Hamilton's, Smith's, Reppond's, Hay's, Sutton's, Edmonds, etc. who will be attending. Wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Fred Hamilton
Sounds great to me--do we make reservations/early registration through this list, or just what is the best way to pre-register? Roy ---that is a good date--for so many and God willing, I will be there. I am so very interested in this reunion and also with the International French/Acadian Fete later in the summer at Crowley --where the TRAHAN International Reunion will be held. What a summer 1999 will be for me??? mary margaret selig-trahan
I talked to Mrs. Ted Lann today about her history of the Pine Grove church near Bernice. There are no more copies available for sale, but there is a possibility of a reprint. I have a copy and will be glad to bring it to the genealogy swap meet. Fred
Thanks, Margaret and Dorothy. Margaret sent me newer telephone numbers for J & W Enterprises, publishers of much north LA materials as well as other areas. Dorothy sent their e-mail address. I'd tried that, but have received no answer yet. Margaret also sent their web site: http://www.dhc.net/~jw/index J & W Enterprises 8505 Dixie-Blanchard Road [318] 292-1730 Shreveport, LA 71107 Thanks for your help. Ann Harper Bonner in Springhill, La. [email protected]
Hello, all--I've been trying for several days to contact J&W, except by mail. Haven't done that yet. Their business phone and home phone are disconnected with no additional info available, as of 16 Dec 1998. Ann Harper Bonner in Springhill, La [email protected]
Larrie wrote: > Is there an internet >source for 1910 obituaries for Union Parish? Larrie and all Union Co Arkansas is directly to the north and MANY of all of our folks had a foot on each side....at least Bruce's families did. I tell him cause they were just like him....a bit of an outlaw and were where ever it was safest! LOL. The Union Parish LaGenWeb Archvies is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm There are only two obits in there. The Union Parish LaGenWeb site is at http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/5002/ I urge you to visit both sites. Karen is the file manager of the archvies. It is a repository for source documents, such as cemetery readings, census, obits, bios, Bible records, court records. Primary source documents! Our meat and potatoes! This is a project to help folks who are researching and don't live in the area. There is an archives for every parish in LA. Winn has the largest....Calcasieu is next in the amount of data that is online. I am the file manager for the state, so I am always begging folks to send in stuff. It can't be gedcoms, it can't be still under copy right and if you hold the copy right, you retain it. It is dedicated to remain free for all to use. Individuals and libraries can make copies of the files for their own personal use, but no one can sell them. Randy DeCuir is the host for the Union Parish site. It is interesting and has some resources that the archives does not have, due to the different nature of each site. SO, I guess what I am saying is that if you want obits online, put them there as I have done. William Henry Craven is one of the two obits that is there. Folks this is a great resource and we can all use it and add to it. (PS, I am managing the Union archvies while Karen is off getting hitched, so if you want to send stuff to the archvies, send it to me.) If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer.
