    3. Unless you are related to me, I only have obits from the gazette and the Banner for the last 2 years. I'm sorry that I got peoples hopes up. However, sometimes in the article it will mention the parents, as well as survivors, I have been able to piece together quite a bit with these obits. I wish I had more. Gina Sherrard

    3. Someone asked about the status of the Union Reunion. We are continuing to publicize the reunion. Everyone on the list should feel free to help with this effort. Tell all your relatives that are not on the list. Post messages to other discussion lists that you are on, etc. Registrations are slowly coming in. We are now up to 30 people attending. Hopefully, we will have some local people that will just show up the morning of the reunion. Sue

    1. SWEDES IN LOUISIANA
    2. Ruth Stout
    3. Hi! to All, More on my recent trip to Union Parish: When I was at the library at LA Tech in Ruston, I found an article in the Farmerville Gazette dated April 11, 1894 which was evidently copied from the Monroe Telegraph Bulletin. The gist of this article is as follows: "...an establishment of Swdes for a canning factory. The North Louisiana Immigration Association hs secured 200 families to settle in the area. Swedes are small farmers - truck farmers..........diversified farming will follow their advent here. As we have said, a better day for this section is at hand and soon the one-crop farmer will be a thing of the past." Did his ever happen? Do any of you have Swedish ancestors if it did happen? 1. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON UNION PARISH
    2. Ruth Stout
    3. I returned this week from a trip last week to Union Parish looking for family. I thought I would share some of my notes with this list. I only wish that those of you who are not familiar with Union Parish or who have never visited or it has been a long time could see springtime there. I was amazed at all the different shades of green as trees were leafing out and meadows and lawns were getting their spring covering. I made a pot of coffee every morning and sat in the porch swing and watched the birds and squirrels play for at least a couple of hours. The wildflowers were wonderful! There is an underlying sadness because I can see that most of the young people are leaving and there is not a great deal of economic incentive to live there. For those of us who live in the city, this is a wonderful place to let go of the stresses, rid your body of the city pollutants, and get ready to back and "fight the dragons" one more day. I hope to see a lot of you at the reunion - I'll even invite you to come sit on my porch with me! I visited the library at Louisiana Tech in Ruston and looked at microfilm of the Farmerville Gazette from 1894. They have the reels for 1894-1895 and 1897-98 I believe. I do know that there are only four years. There are other newspapers from the area also. The staff and student volunteers are very knowlegeable and very helpful. I spent almost one whole day and did not make it through 1894 but am looking forward to going back. I did not expect to find much information on my family but the history of the time made the trip worthwhile. Be sure to visit but be sure you do not park by a curb that is painted blue! I visited the library at Farmerville and there is a small family history section but I did find some gems there. I found that someone had copied the minutes of the First Baptist Church of Spearsville from 1849 to 1900 and hit gold on some family members. I found the book late and did not have time to read it all so am planning another trip to do that. Lastly, I would encourage - strongly - everyone to be sure that you document all your data. If you find information from other sources be sure to note it and also let others know that you personally may not have found the proof. I found two family histories that have erroneous information about my grandparents. This IS my family and I do know the names and birthdates and who married where and when but I also have documentation in my notes concerning marriage record books, family bibles, cemetery records, etc. I realize that none of us is ever going to be perfect but please be as careful as you can in getting your information out to the rest of the world, especially in this age of electronic media. If you have not signed up for the Reunion, I encourage you to do so. Union Parish is a fascinating place where many peoples of all backgrounds came together to make a better life for themselves and future generations. Ruth Stout

    1. Re: MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON UNION PARISH
    2. Hello! Just a note to let everybody know that the Farmerville Library has the Farmerville Gazette on microfilm also. It starts with the same years and goes on into later years. I don't remember exactly how far it goes. But, I know that it goes through the 1930's. I was there a couple of weekends ago and was looking for a mention of the death of my gggrandmother, Anna Stacey Meeks who died in 1936. Debbie

    1. WEDDING OF LEE GOYNE AND ETTA HEARD
    2. Ruth Stout
    3. I was recently in Ruston, LA at the library at LA Tech University reading microfilm copies of the Farmerville Gazette from 1894 and came across a description of the wedding of the above two people. The write-up is from the Gazette of Wednesday, May 23, 1894. If any of the people in the wedding party are your ancestors, I will be glad to make copies and send to you if you will send me your snail mail address. Excerpts from the article are (I have capitalized the names of wedding party memebers so that they are easy to see): "At the Baptist church of our sister town, Shiloh, in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives of the contractions parties, the nuptials of MR. LEE GOYNE and MISS ETTA HEARD were celebrated last Sunday morning. Prompty at ten o-clock MISS ETHEL ROBINSON rendered the sweet strains of thte wedding march .....................MISSES GENIE STERLING and MATTIE LOU MOORE, bridesmaids, looking beautiful in immaculate white...............DR. J. G. TAYLOR and MR. YOUNG FULLER groomsmen...............Two beautiful little flower girls JENNIE PREAUS and RUTH FULLER walked immediately before the betrother pair, strewing their path with roses. Lastly came the bride and groom and took their place beneath a large and handsome wedding bell of roses and evergreens, before Hymen's altar where REV. J. V. B. WALDROP, of Spearsville...................After receving the congratulations of their friends, the happy husband and wife, accompanied by a few especial friends, drove over to Farmerville where MR. AND MRS. W. J. TURNAGE served an elegant wedding dinner. The bride if the daughter of MR. AND MRS. T. A. HEARD, one of Shiloh's most prominent families and is admired by all for hre culture, grace and beauty and is an ornament and jewel to any circle in which she may be thrown. Robed in an exquisite costume of pearl gray silk, trimmed in lace and orange blossoms, she looked the fairest of the fair.........................The groom is well known throughout the parish as a gentleman of high standing and courteous manners and is to be congratulated in winning the hand of such a queenly bride."
