Does anyone have any more information on the Caskey family listed here. JW Caskey, I think is my gggg grandfather. John Caskey had a daughter named Mary Cathrine who married Ben Tubbs. From the listing I assume Martha McGowan was John's wife (my gggg grandmother) and that they also had three other children Jasper, Sallie and Margaret. Mary Cathrine was born and married in AL so I assume the whole family came from AL to Union Parish. Any additional information on this line would be appreciated. Sue Linder-Linsley
Hi all, We got a new contribution to the archives. Harold & Lynda Phillips surveyed the white half of Springhill Cemetery. In a couple of weeks or so they are going to do the African American half, and we'll get that up there too. I see lots of names that crop up on roll calls in this cemetery - Wood, Odom, Brashier, Brazell, Moore, and many others. Everyone go take a look. There is an interesting little history at the beginning of the survey, and a monument to those who were buried there without markers. Karen For any newbies, the url is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm Then just click on "Cemeteries"
Thanks to Karen for calling our attention to Springhill Cemetery. The following families either lived or later moved to Strong (Union County) Arkansas and many are buried in the Strong Cemetery. The following families lived in or near Strong in the 1950s: Burgess; Duck; Newsom; Clark; Gathright; Wheelis; Norris; Murphy; Burson; Phillips; Maroney; Norsworthy; Dollar. The Sophia A. Burgess was a Madden before marriage and Madden (Leake County, MS) is named for that family. Elizabeth LAWRENCE DOLLAR was the wife of Samuel B. DOLLAR who is buried in an unmarked grave beside her. Of course, Governor Donaghey of Arkansas descended from the Donaghey Family of this cemetery. I copied the Strong Cemetery several years ago and it was published in the Tracks and Traces, the genealogical magazine put out by the Union County Genealogical Society. Does anyone know how far back the Springhill Church records go or if there are any in existence? Louis Taunton

I subscribe to the ancestry.com service. On a whim, I entered my own name and found material on my immediate family. The information had been posted by an individual under the name KENW@primary.net. Does anyone know this researcher? I have sent 2 emails but have had no response. I did not recognize the email address as one that was researching my family lines. I would like to make contact. I'm sure we have more information to share. All is well here in Madisonville. We've about got all of the boxes unpacked. I've started on finishing my Ferguson book and hope to have it ready in time for the holidays. Everytime I get close to completion, I find another family line that I want to include. Roy Austin
Jan, I am not aware of any burial records prior to 1900 for any Union Parish cemeteries, even for the Farmerville City Cemetery. Even today in many Union Parish cemeteries, there are no sexton record books of any sort. Tim Hudson
Hi all you cousins!!! According to family tradition, John Henry Craven is buried in an unmarked grave in the northwest corner of the cemetery. He died during the War Between the States. Does anyone know if there is an association or records of burials on that cemetery that I could check. I recently found a record of one of my ancestors who died in 1858 ! He's in an unmarked grave in Sulphur Springs TX. This is why I'm asking. I used to assume that no records that far back could possibly exist. Wrong! Thanks for any help. Jan Craven
I know that many people on the LAUNION list received the following message, but thought also that you might want to post the obituary to the obituary files. I am Guy W. Boyett's son in law, and it is with great sorrow that I write to let you know of his passing. Guy passed away Monday morning, after a long struggle with several ailments. When he lost the ability to fish and do the rest of the things that filled his earlier life, he became very interested in computers and genealogy. I know that he enjoyed conversing with each of you and spoke of you often. We, as a family, would like to thank you for your part in making the past few years more enjoyable for Guy. Here is a link to Guy's Obituary. http://thecabin.net/stories/091200/obi_0912000023.html

Hi Maradee :) Sorry I don't have Georgia and James Wynn in my database but I do have Wynn's married into my Manning line (thanks to David Manning *grin*). Ellen G. Wynn (b. June 21, 1880 d. August 26, 1943) married William Alvin Manning. Her parents were Jack Lemuel Wynn and Ithamer Rehabiah Pearson. She had another sister (Johnnie Ithamer Wynn) and another brother (Floyd Wynn) Do you have any connection to this Manning family? I'm trying to hook up with all cousins related to John Manning and his 3 other brothers and 2 other sisters. Thanks! Lori Our Mixed Nuts .. err .. Roots http://www.redrival.com/alana
I'm interested in the Georgia Wynn listed in the Laran (formerly Nelson) Cemetery. My great grandfather, James Monroe Wynn had a sister named Georgia Wynn. He and his family came to Union Parish around 1892 or 93 from Henry Co., Georgia. Maradee Liggin Cryer

ooops! That would be Laran (formerly Nelson) Cemetery. Karen
Thank you Karen for putting this on the archives and BIG THANKS to Peggy and Gina! I had the old transcription by Lillian McCowen in 1972, and I've added yours to my source documentation. I did notice alot of Halloway/Holloway and I'm wondering if it is the same family. Any Holloway researchers on the list that could give me an idea? Also, I'd like to get hold of Peggy and share information, as we share the same ancestors of Manning and McCormick. I also come from the Jones and Morgan's and it was great seeing their names again. I didn't see her email addy on the webpage, is she on the list? Thanks! Lori Karen Rice wrote: > Hi all, > Just put a new cemetery on the archives. Hi all, Just put a new cemetery on the archives. Surveyed by Peggy Rocket, updated as of Aug 2000, and contributed by Gina Sherrard. Gina says it's a gold mine for those researching Laran, McCormick, Porter, and Wynn - but I noticed some Austins and Brashears and other names we see go through here a lot - maybe a Byram? Karen
I feel that I need to clarify my previous post. I listed a web site where the El Dorado daily newspaper could be found. Each day they post the obituaries just like any newspaper. I have found many family connection there. Occasionally I see other family names that are talked about here. El Dorado is just across the Ark border in Union County, Ark. and there are many Union and Claiborne Parish people who have obituaries in this paper. I apologize for any misunderstandings.
