    1. Willis Austin help
    2. Hudson, Timothy D.
    3. Several weeks ago I requested information on Willis Austin and his Oklahoma Confederate pension. Several people were kind enough to respond with help on him, but no one had any record of his living in the state of Oklahoma. I now have copies of his Oklahoma pension file. It gives little information of value. In fact, there is absolutely NO information whatsoever on his service, as the application is apparently missing (or else the clerk at the OK archives failed to copy it for me). All that was in his file was copies of numerous letters from Austin to the OK pension board. He apparently moved around a lot and was continuously writing them asking to forward his check to various locations in OK. On 22 Mar 1921, Mrs. Alice L. Austin of Sayre OK wrote to the pension board stating that her husband Willis Austin was sick in Sayre and wanting them to mail his check there instead of their usual address of El Reno. Then on 5 May 1921, she wrote to say that he had died on 18 April 1921. She was then 74 and asked to have his pension continued to her. Can anyone tell me if this is the same man who served in Company C, 17th Louisiana Infantry from Union Parish LA? I am almost certain it is, for in the Compiled Military SErvice Record at the National Archives for Willis Austin of Co C, 17th La. Inf. Regiment, there is a notation that he later received a pension from OK. Apparently the pension board there wrote to the War Department and got his military file. Someone wrote to me that Willis Austin died in TX, but this pension indicates he died in OK. Can anyone clear all this up for me? Thanks, Tim Hudson

I have not been able to find out anything about her family. Many of my ancestors were in Wilkes Co., Georgia in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They all lived as neighbors on Fishing and Upton Creek. Edmond, Hay, Peters, Liggin and perhaps Wynn. They are all on the early tax records. Maradee Liggin Cryer

    2. In a message dated 2/4/01 8:06:56 AM Pacific Standard Time, aberizn1@gte.net writes: << Our information is real sketchy, because we've just started discovering it. I'm wondering if our John Edmonds will turn out to be your #5 below. We don't have a date or origin on him yet, but his son George Washington Edmonds m. Mary Sophia Rust, and their daughter Louisa Edmonds married John O'Rear in VA in 1818. Their daughter, Mary Jane O'Rear, b. 1823 VA, married James Michael Rice, a famous saddle maker, who is my spouse's great-great grandfather. Also related to this family, a niece of George Washington Edmonds, I believe, is Amanda Virginia "Tee" Edmonds who wrote a Journal during the Civil War. She is often cited on History Channel programs, and we've found the journal just fascinating to read. >> Karen, Here's the information that I have on the John Edmonds that you requested. Hope it is of some help. I'm afraid that the dates given fall too late in the time line to be this Edmonds family as they were in Wilkes Co., GA by about 1785. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Roy ****************************************************************************** ****************** John Edmonds, b. ca. 1746. Married Winifred Buckner, daughter of Anthony Buckner, who will filed in Halifax Co., VA, names his daughter. John and Winifred Edmonds were in Halifax County, VA in 1770, sold out there by 1784, and were on the 1785 tax list of Wilkes County, GA. John was the son of John Edmonds, b. about 1716 in Wales, came to Jamestown, VA in 1732 and married about 1735. John Edmonds obtained land in Oglethorpe Co., GA 1785, 1802, 1808, 1817, 1822 on Newford, Fishing and Kettle Creeks, on tax list 1815, 1810, had bounty grants Wilkes County 1794, 1786, 1790, 1795. John and Winfred Edmonds children (don't know that this is a complete list): (1) James Monroe Edmonds, b. 1776, married Sarah Ross Bruce, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Bruce, August 2, 1812. He died in 1826. Sarah Edmonds is head of household on the 1830 census of Wilkes County, GA, age 40-50, 1 female 10-15, one female 15-20. James Edmonds is on the 1820 census of Oglethorpe Co., GA but not on the 1830. (a) James Monroe Edmonds, March 1823-1900, married Sarah P. A. Almeda Edmonds, b. 1853 married _____ Kennedy. B. Eliza Frances Edmonds, married ____ Harper C. Sally Edmonds married____Taylor Wilkes County Cemeteries by Newsom p. 155 shows the Edmonds-Kennedy-Silvey cemetery between Rayle and Philomath at old Pea Ridge settlement. In this cemetery are James Monroe Edmonds, 1823-1900 and with him Sarah P. Edmonds, 1818-1911. Also Thomas Kennedy 1853-1928, Mary Kennedy 1850-1924, and Thomas H. Kennedy 1864-1955. (2) Anthony Edmonds (named for Anthony Buckner, father of Winifred) may be father of William A. Edmonds, who was b. October 14, 1814, Oglethorpe Co., GA, died February 8, 1902, Fayette Co. AL. William Edmonds lived in AL from 1844. On 1820 census Oglethorpe Co., GA 26-45 with 5 males under 10, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45. On 1830 census Oglethorpe Co., GA, 50-60 with 2 males 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-16. On 1840 census Taliaferro County, GA, 60-70, with 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 20-30. William A. Edmonds could have been one of the males in 1820 and 1830, not 1840, when he may be with Winifred, his grandmother in Wilkes Co..... Anthony Edmonds on tax list of Oglethorpe Co, GA in 1810. Bought land in 1818, Oglethorpe Co from James Edmonds. Buys land in 1829 Oglethorpe Co. Sells land 1820, with other deeds 4 1/2 acres to County Line Baptist Church December 24, 1830. It appears that John Edmonds born about 1746, was in Lincoln County, GA about 1802-1805, with some Anthony, James and John. (3) John L. Edmonds, married Aurilla Tatom on February 13, 1806, Lincoln Co., GA, daughter of John Tatom. Aurilla Tatom Edmonds shown as head of household 1830 Walton County, GA census so John L. Edmonds may have died (perhaps before 1825 since John Tatom's will asks an older brother to take care of Aurilla and the will is dated 1825).

    1. Edmonds lineage
    2. Karen, Below is a very brief sketch of information that I have on the Edmonds from VA that you asked about. It appears that the Union Parish Edmonds were from VA, left about 1785 for Wilkes Co., GA before moving on to Alabama and ultimately Union Parish, LA. I have a good bit of Edmonds information in paper form. Wish more of it was electronic. If anyone would like to know what I have, please feel free to ask. I'll check and pass it on. Most of my research has been on Francis Edmonds and his descendants. Once I complete my current project on the Ferguson family, I'd like to spend some time looking at the Virginia end of the Edmonds family. Based on an account of William A. Edmonds appearing in an 1881 Fayette, AL newspaper, John Edmonds was born in Wales about 1716 and came to Jamestown, Virginia in 1732 at the age of 16. John Edmonds was reportedly sent to the colonies as punishment for dogging a pet deer belonging to one of the princesses. He married about 1735. William A. Edmonds was the great-grandson of the subject John Edmonds. He got the family history from his grandfather, William Edmonds, and saw the family Bible belonging to his great-grandfather, John Edmonds. Where is that Bible now??? John Edmonds and his son, Harry, fought in the French and Indian War. Harry, age 17, was killed in 1755 during the war at Duquesne. John Edmonds children were: 1. Harry, b. about 1738, killed at age 17 in 1755 at Duquesne in the French and Indian War. 2. Frank (Francis) b. about 1740, supposedly the one later found in Wilkes Co., GA and the ancestor of most the Union Parish, LA Edmonds descendants. He married a Rachel. Arrived in Wilkes Co., GA about 1785. His son, William Edmonds, was the father of James Edmonds who married Grissela Hay. They had a daughter, Mary Edmonds who married 1. George Tabor and 2. Daniel W. Lee. 3. Sidney Edmonds b. about 1742. 4. William Edmonds b. about 1744. Wife may have been Penelope. 5. John Edmonds b. about 1746 married Winifred Buckner, daughter of Anthony Buckner whose will was filed in Halifax County, VA. Later moved to Wilkes Co., GA in 1785. 6. There was a daughter who married Matthew Cox. I have much more information on the Francis and Rachel Edmonds descendants than that shown above and some on the Alabama Edmonds and the ones living in Claiborne Parish. Roy Austin

    2. Karen Rice
    3. Dear fellow listers, First of all, let me offer an apology because that piece of spam somehow got throught the Rootsweb filter. I sent it to the rootsweb spam abuse address, but that shouldn't have happened. Now - on to the realllly big problem - this morning I was cleaning up the files on the Union Parish archives, and I accidentally sent 17 files somewhere into cyberspace with no hope of ever getting them back. They are all "explanatory text" files for pictures on the Union Parish photo page, and I think everybody who had submitted photos is either on this list or they have a friend who is, so here goes with the appeal: five of them I can fix easily - they're my own family (blush - no favoritism here!) The rest are: EDNA WILSON - Andrew Jackson Austin and grandsons, 1928 Sarah Elizabeth Lowery Austin, early 1900s ROY AUSTIN - Buckley School Mary Edmonds Hay gravestones JANE HINTON - John Matthews, 1858 BRUCE ODOM - W.A. Odom Family, 1910 KELLY PRIESTLY - Union Parish Loggers, 1900 SUSAN HERRING - J. B. Tabor family, 1901 Tabor family reunion, 1928 DEBBIE RICHARD - Union Parish residents 1890 Union Parish residents 1926 The photos are fine - I just lost the text files that had descriptions, names, etc. I appeal to those of you named above for replacement information. I appeal to the rest of you - if you copied the information in those files for your own use and can send it, please do so. Help me get our wonderful archives back the way it should be!! Thanking you in advance, Karen Mabry Rice PS - Roy - what do you know about Mary Edmonds family? Is that the Edmonds family that goes back to Fauquier Co, VA? Karen

    2. I went to the library yesterday and finally found something interesting. Some of you may have it already. 1864 Census for Re-Organizing The Georgia Militia Abstracted and Compiled by Nancy J. Gathright, W. C. 49 yrs. 6 mos. Mechanic b. Twiggs Co. Ga. Note: I wonder if the William C. is William Croom. If he was born in 1815, he would have been a baby when Miles died. I know the W. M. is William Mosby, probably Jr. I would appreciate any comments you may have. Don, Sorry no Merrill Smith. I realized in 1864 most of the Gathrights were already in Ark. or Union Parish. Candace .
