I'm sorry I can remember who wanted the old community names. Where my parent live it used to be called Rum Center. Daddy swears it was because of all the moonshine! I don't know. They live three miles Morth of Spearsville. Gina __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/

I need a cemetery lookup for James K and Buena Vista Jane Fomby. My guess is that they would either be buried in Union or Lincoln Parish. Thanks in advance. Gaylon L Powell gaylon@flash.net Austin TX
Was there ever a community called Nip and Tuck? If so, how did it get it's name? Thanks, Sherry
We've got 20 new obits - 12 from Gina & Peggy, 4 from Ann Pearson, and 2 from Harold Dozier Also a Military Roster, a marriage license, a slave sale deed, and 6 photos from Bobby Bayles. I've been trying to spiff things up and make it all look better and more uniform. One thing I did - and I'd appreciate it if those with the names I'm going list in their ancestry would go take a look - I rescanned and enlarged the photo of all the ladies on R. T. Moore's farm - you can see a lot of detail, and the faces are somewhat recognizable. The names on the back actually read from RIGHT to LEFT - the opposite of usual, and everyone is named except the woman at the far left. The names are: Mrs. Everett Mrs. Miller Miss Bella Moore Mrs. Wainryht Mrs. Fuller Mrs. Grafton Mrs. McFerin Mrs. Newton & babie Mrs. McDonald & babie Miss Clara Moore Mrs. Thaxton Mrs. Odom Mrs. Robinson Mrs. Raley & babie Mrs. Moore (R. T.'s wife?) Mrs. Barckly (Buckly?) Mrs. Cole Mrs. Brooks Mrs. Ruths (??) Mrs. Reeves & babie Mrs. E. B. Robison Mr. R.T. Moore, two darkis --------------------------------------- ALSO - SHERRY GRITZBAUGH!!! If you're out there, I need your help. I accidentally replaced the Bagwell/Feazel Family Bible Record you sent in 1999 with Tim Hudson's Hosea Bright Breazel Bible Record. Never know what will happen when you start cleaning house! That's the only mistake I've found so far. That's how I lost Edna Liggin's Joseph Shaw article a couple of years ago and accidentally replaced it with yours. ______________________ Also, I'm working on pulling together a decent map of Union Parish for us that will hopefully show all the old towns and cemeteries. If anyone has any suggestions, send them! Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Does anyone know when the search function will be working again at GENFORUM? It hasn't worked for me since their last upgrade. Thanks David Strickland dstrickland@optekinc.com

Hi Gang! Gina has 12 obits ready and waiting for me, but tonight I played with my new scanner. Besides 2 photos that Bobby Bayles sent of his Moore family, I scanned one of my great uncles, Lucien & Ernest Copeland when they were 7 and 10 years old in 1898. Tried 3 photo programs before I was finally able to save it as a jpg of the right size, but I think it looks great! Now I'm going to run off to Branson for a 3 day weekend with my spouse, and I'll get to those obits when I get back! By the way, a couple of years ago when I took off to get married there was some muttering and speculation (good humored) on this list about my running off up north to marry this ole Yankee. I have been dutifully doing the genealogical research on the Rice family, and it seems the spouse's southren credentials are better than mine! They are from Fauquier Co, VA and both great-granpap and great-great-uncle fit in the big one with Mosby's Rangers. And Amanda Virginia "Tee" Edmonds, who wrote the Civil War journal that is quoted on the History Channel so much, is a 2nd cousin, 5X removed. Am I forgiven? Hi gang! Here's the new stuff for tonight: 6 obits - 1 for Allie Ruby Feazell Upchurch from John N. Feazell & 5 from Debbie Richard. Debbie's are all from the Farmerville Gazetter and are better classified as "death notices," short and to the point. They are: Mrs. L. J. Buckly, 1898 Mrs. Clarinda Seale Ham, 1897 Mrs. John A. Owens, 1897 Mr. J. T. Taunton, 1898 Mrs. M. Guehring, 1897. Debbie also sent us a marriage article from the 1898 Farmerville Gazette for James M. Smith and Eva May Slaton that everyone should go read just for the flowery language. Three new photos from Bobby Bayles: Doris J. Watson & her classmates at Wilhite School, 1920 The Bayles Family in 1906 Edney Tuberville Feazel & a fantastic car !! ca. 1920 That's all for now - many thanks to all you wonderful contributors - we're lookin' good! Charlotte, Karen, and all ********** Charlotte asked Karen: "Karen is Galon related to any of the Powells from Marion? If so I would like to contact. I am from James Moore P, Lewis Moore P, Francis Marion P, James Lewis P." ********** These names do not look familier, however, there is a possibility that there are some of my Powells that yet remain in that area. Here is what I know so far, and perhaps someone may have info that will tie in. William Jasper Powell (5 Feb 1830 - 9 May 1913), b. Jasper Co, GA--family moved to Tallapoosa Co, AL when he was young Mary Elizabeth Britton (18 Feb 1831 - 1870's) b. Butts Co, GA--family moved to Troup/Heard Co, GA on the Troup side of the line. They married 1848 in Troup Co, and they had 9 children--5 girls & 4 boys. The oldest child was probably born in Troup Co. They then moved to Tallapoosa County, and then moved back to Troup Co. about 1861 where he joined the Confederate Army. After the war, they lived in Heard Co, and then moved to Union/Lincoln Parish in the 1870's. After Mary's death, He married Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards. W J later moved to Brown Co, Texas, and he married again to Mrs. Mary Alline Byers. He died near the town of Waldrip in McCulloch Co., Texas. So far, I have located the graves of 4 of the children, and the doors of information have been surfacing on two others lately. Their 9 children: 1. Buena Vista Jane Powell (b. 6 Oct 1849)--m. James K Fomby. Known children: Laura E, Wilson Lumpkin (married Lizzie Neel Bella Coplen and is buried at Shiloh Cem), ______ (I could not read this name off of the Census), Otis Britton (buried Pleasent Valley Cem, Brown Co, TX), James, Curtis, Edward C, Lizzie Emma (married Seabron Jesse Booles and is buried at Shiloh Cem), Jefferson, & Oscar 2. Leroy N Powell (b. 4 Mar 1851)--1m. Bertha Hamilton. Known children: John Henry, W E, James H, Mattie May (married Frank Cooper), Alex, and Robert Lee (married Ethel Coplen). In the late 1880's Leroy is living in Williamson Co, TX and marries twice again (Jan 1889 & Aug 1890). Leroy and this 3rd wife, Susan Hollowman moved to Brown Co, TX and has the following known children: Ethel E, Bonnie Lee, Jestin C, Joseph K, and Marian A. It appears that his children from his first marriage remained in Union Parish and at least one child lived with Bertha's brother, J. D. Hamilton. 3. Virginia E Powell (b. 18 Apr 1853)--m. Hiram S Burson. They moved to Hutto, Williamson Co, TX and are buried in the Hutto City Cem. I do not know the names of their children at this time. 4. Elovena P Powell (b. 24 Feb 1855)--m. Wash Clark. They had no children. 5. William Emanuel Powell (b. 25 May 1857)--no more information 6. Martha Texana Powell (b. 12 Nov 1860)--m. Joseph Jackson Edwards. Joe Edwards was a Primitive Baptist minister. Known children: Lonnie, Wesley, Mary, Ray, Byran, Bertha, Dean, Manor, Gertrude, Carrie Buck. They lived in Brown Co, TX and are buried in De Leon City Cemetery, De Leon, Comanche Co, TX 7. John Thomas Powell (b. 26 Nov 1863)--1m. Ida May Fuller in Lincoln Parish, 1885. She died due to complications of childbirth, and the baby died also. 2m. Annie Eliza Coplen, Union Parish, 1887; 2 children: Effie Pearl, William Reed (my g grandfather). Annie died when Reed was 6 months old. 3m. Nina Shaw, Union Parish, 1890. Children: Mamie Irene, Clarence Brooks, Onnie Lee, James Floyd, Mattie Esther, Robert Fred, John Burl, J T--the last 5 were born in Texas. The lived in Brown Co, TX and they are buried at Greenleaf Cem, Brownwood, Brown Co, TX. 8. Joseph Edward Powell, MD (b. 14 Feb 1868)--m. Samantha Ann ? Children: Edna T, Mary L, Maggie M, and Paul William. They are buried at Live Oak Cem, Brady, McCulloch Co, TX 9. Purla P Powell (b. 26 Feb 1871)--m. ? Edison. No more information Thanks, Gaylon L Powell Austin TX

Hi Gang, Well, we've got 30 new obits fron Gina Sherrard and Peggy Rockett and 1 from Ann Pearson. And we've got a neat new photo on the "Unidentifieds" page. Elaine Parks found it in an antique shop in Ruston. We don't know the school, the year (I'm guessing late 1800s), or any of the children. Elaine was interested in it because it was apparently taken by Davis Studio in Ruston - does anyone know anything about them? Elaine has Davis ancestors. I'm formatting a new military roster from Tim Hudson, and it will be up soon. Sherry Gritzbaugh, in my zeal to clean up the files and make them look pretty I somehow got the Hosea Bright Bible into the file that should contain the Bagwell/Feazel Family Bible. That just completely wiped out the Bagwell/Feazel Bible. Could you please send it again? Which reminds me, my cousin Gaylon Powell had printed out the lost file on Joseph B. Shaw - the one written by Edna Liggin, but his printer didn't get about 2 1/2 words on the right side of the page. I filled them in the best I could, but I wish you would go in and take a look, Maradee Cryer, and make sure I didn't mess it up too bad. I have always heard that the name of Union Parish was chosen to celebrate the union of the states that formed the United States at that time. However, I have no actual proof of this statement. 16 new obits up, 15 from Gina Sherrard & Peggy Rockett, 1 from Mary Margaret Selig-Trahan. Also, I understand the search engines weren't working for a while after the server maintenance. Word is they are working fine now. Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Hi gang, Well, I asked you all to go take a look at the unidentified school photos with all the people named, the took off with my hubby for some R&R. When we got back, I discovered you hadn't been able to get into the files. Sorry - it seems when they did all that work on the servers at Rootsweb something changed and we had to go in and change all the html on the links or our files would not be accessible. Mine are all changed now, so you shouldn't have any problems. If you do, let me know.
