    3. Umm! That should be Gaylon Powell instead of Gaylon Coplen. :-) Also, if you would add an extra great to Susan Annie Moore Coplen--she was my g-g-g grandmother. Karen, you are doing a wonderful job. There are very few County/Parish web sites that are informative and full of useful information. 3. I still maintain I couldn't do it without the rest of you, but thanks very much. Now lets welcome two new members. Welcome to Dena Jordan - tell us about yourself and what you're looking for, Dena. Welcome to Rebecca Stenzel. We have to talk more Rebecca! Rebecca is another cousin for me! Her g-g-grandfather, Richard Tubb Moore & my g-g-grandfather, George Washington Moore were brothers. We have other cousins on the list, too, Rebecca - Gaylon Coplen & Gloria & Troy Coplen. Susan Annie Moore, G W Moore's daughter was mine & Troy's g-grandmother & Gaylon's g-g-grandmother. Roy Austin is also related to the Moores. Did I miss anyone? Rebecca lives in Bernice and that photo I put up of R T Moore's house - she told me that house was built in 1903, so I have to change my estimate of the age of the photo, and that house burned in 1926, but that she worked to restore the one that replaced it and get it on the National Historic Register. The current house is called Sweet Onion. Thanks for the info, Rebecca. I will have a copy of the photo made for you and send it soon. Any contributions you want to make to the Archives are more than welcome! Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

    1. thanks to Karen
    2. MY THANKS GO TO KAREN ALSO. I have been to the courthouse in Farmerville several times. There just always seems to be something I missed. I want to thank everyone who has contributed information on Union Parish. I go to Baton Rouge Bluebonnet library once in a while. They just don't have the info that all of you are putting on the website. I especially thank Jan Craven for telling me about this site. Karen, I am so glad to be related to you on the Poole Mabry side. I am hoping to go to the DeShazo reunion in Leeds Ala. Unfortunately, I know these are all relatives, but I can't prove my John DeShazo from Union Parish is from this line. I know it is, but there is no proof of his father. Someday I hope to prove it. Thanks again for all the cousins I have met and for Roy sending me the deed that has Miles Gathright's name on it. Spring Hill Church means a lot more now. Candace

    2. I, too, want to add my noise to the applause thanking all those who work so diligently to make this list and Union Parish website so wonderful. I enjoy it and keep coming back for more (sorta like chocolate). I am coming to Arcadia for a visit (family reunion of sorts with the Durretts of Lincoln parish). I am also related to the Culbertsons buried in Culbertson cemetery. On this trip I will have time to do family research. Where would be good places to go? The last time I was there I had good luck looking up old issues of the newspaper at the Farmerville Library. RMae in Virginia

Also ditto to Lisa's note---- I'd be glad to transcribe most anything. Source info would have to be mailed snail or scanned and sent but I'd be glad to help in anyway I can! I've done some transcribing for a couple of other sites so I have a little experience.... Would appreciate the chance to "give back" a little to Union Parish!!!! - Leah

Somebody here is probably a cousin! And that's all you're going to hear from me tonight, or I won't be able to continue making the claim that we're a low volume list! 1. Thanks FROM Karen
    2. Karen Rice
    3. Thank you for the kind words, folks, but may I make a clarification? One, I don't "own" those archives. USGenWeb is an all-volunteer project and those archives are yours! Two, because I don't live in Union Parish, all my research has been done in the "old days" Tim was talking about - through the mail, through those old microfilm machines Tim mentioned, and to quote Blanche DuBois <g> through "the kindness of strangers." For the last 3 years I've had the wonderworld of the internet opened up to me, I've found tons of stuff on all my families, and there's just one thing about the internet I hate. I don't think family research should have become the cash cow it is for a bunch of money grubbers. Our Archives is something special, I think, but it wouldn't be without Tim and Roy and Hazel and Mary Margaret and Gina and Judy and Sherry and Jan and Harold and Bobby and Ann and Gaylon and all the others I haven't named who send in their contributions. That's why it's OUR archive - I'm just the mechanic - you're the motor! Karen PS - Not everyone knows this, but I also found my spouse on the Internet!! <g> Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

    3. Kelly, Why don't you join us? It's easy. Just send an email to LAUNION-L-request@rootsweb.com with nothing in the subject line and only the word "subscribe" in the body of the e-mail. We're a pretty good bunch of folks, don't yak too much so your mailbox won't be flooded, and try to help each other when we can. These were my great grandparents and I know that Mary died on April 27 1918 and I don't know the year that Will died. Mary Murphy would be the daughter of William and Mary Brown. 3. I am sending this message to publicly express my sincere appreciation to Karen Mabry Rice for her incredible work as the manager-owner of the USGenWeb Union Parish Louisiana Archives. She is constantly working to improve and update the archives, and the information she has collected, organized, and cataloged is unbelievable! I'm only 36, but I remember quite well the "old days" when the only way to do genealogical research in Union Parish was to travel to a library or to Farmerville, spend hours on a microfilm machine that often did not work properly, sometimes having to wait for a turn on the microfilm reader, bother with parking tickets at the Farmerville courthouse, etc. But today, with Karen's help, we can view the 1850-1860 censuses online already, and soon it looks like we'll be able to view the 1870-1920 censuses from the archives page; this is in addition to the succession index as well as numerous other records. Furthermore, I have not come across any other parish page that has nearly as many records as does Union Parish's. Even the parishes with large Louisiana cities - Orleans, Ouachita, or East Baton Rouge Parishes - none of them compare to ours. Of course many thanks should go to all those who contribute their time and energy in preparing records for Karen to post. But I do not think anyone else could come close to managing this page as efficiently or as professionally as does Karen. So, I hope others who have a deep interest in the early history of Union Parish will join me in thanking Karen for all of her work and her contributions to Union Parish genealogy. Please keep up the work!! Tim Hudson
