    1. Stowe Cemetery
    2. To Whom It May Concern: The second oldest cemetery in the area that was once known as Union Parish, Louisiana is located seven miles from Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. I am told it is the second oldest cemetery in the area. The gravestone data was E-mailed to Kelly Priestly and Karen Mabry Rice. Karen was sent the only pictures I had of Hannah Payne Wood and some of the other graves. Unfortunately, she has not been able to post them on her site since Matthew Wood and Hannah were buried in Lincoln Parish. This is sad as Matthew Wood was the President of the first police jury and donated the land for the town of Farmerville, Louisiana. She advised me to contact Kelly Priestly who has not responded to any of my e-mails. I am going to send the pictures again. It is too hard for me to type the cemetery information again. If Karen still has it, perhaps she could forward the information on to you. There will be two (2) pictures on each e-mail which will follow this letter. Is there a reason no one wants the John Stow Cemetery information? This cemetery has been restored and is totally beautiful. The pictures will speak for themselves. Sherry Gresham Gritzbaugh

    3. Hi List, a most kind person on this list has given me new hope regarding my 'Calbert' family. Now, I was wondering if anyone has access to a 1870 Union Parish Census, Stamped Pg 18A, starting on line 14, the first person listed is Culbert, Green, age 35. If anyone has access, I would like to know the rest of the information on this census regarding him (occupation-place of birth etc), and anyone else in the household with the same information. Help is most certainally appreciated. Thank you all, so very much. I know there should be more Calberts-Culberts-Calverts-Colberts or however they spelled it at the time, and if you run across anymore, I would appreciate it. I'm not sure, but I think they lived near Farmerville. Dena Jordan California

    3. Jim I don't know if you already have this info, but just in case you don't. Moses and Eleanor PEARSON are buried at the Pearson Family Cemetery. The cemetery is located 4 miles NW of Farmerville. This information is in the Cemetery Inscriptions of Union Parish, LA volume 4 by W. C. Nolan. PEARSON, Eleanor A. PRICE 1804 12 Jun 1879 PEARSON, Moses 14 Oct 1849 Of course, there are several more PEARSON buried in this cemetery. If you would like the others let me know at Adventurers@worldnet.att.net There is no listing for them in the marriage record book that I have, but it doesn't start till about 1842. In the book Some Slaveholders and their Slaves Union Parish, LA 1839-1865 by Harry F. Dill and William Simpson, Moses Pearson is listed several times. Book a-2, P 572 Succession of Moses Pearson, December 1849, died 1849. Mentions widow, Eleanor Pearson, sons, Davis Pearson, William and Jesse Pearson. Slaves ( No ages shown) Winney A, Morrison, Peggy, and children, Mary, Kizy, girl, Manerva, Rachel, Jane, John, Lize, and Lafayett; Friday, Will, Sampson, Sally, Allen and Frank; Lucy, and children, Alex, Sam Sarah, Rose, Adeline, Nancy and Tabbett, boy. Book A-1, p 182 Know ye all men that I have sold to Moses Pearson 2 slaves, Graves, 20 and Selph, a girl, 14 for $1000. 29 Nov 1847 Milton Pinkston Moses Pearson Witnesses: D M harris, J E Jones Recorded: 29 Nov 1847 Book A-1, p 243 Be it remembered that before me, William C. Smith, Parish Recorder, appeared Phillip May who declares he has sold to Powhatten Boatright a negro slave named Patsey, between 20 and 25, for $500. 27 Dec 1847 Philip May Powhatten Boatright Witnesses: Moses Pearson J V Butler Recorded: 27 Dec 1847 That is all I could find in the books that I have. 3. Janyce King, Maggie Stewart, and Kay Mason, of the national USGenWeb Census Project, reformatted and proofread Judy Cole's transcription of the 1850 Census, and we now have it on the Archives in place of the old file. It conforms with the ACP Standard, so now we are listed on the Census Project and the whole world can know that we have some census records in Union Parish. The same thing will be done with the 1860 Census in the next couple of weeks. I am working on getting the 1840, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 images for us. Once we have them (I hope), I have two volunteers for the transcriptions, and would be glad to hear from more. I will keep you advised. 1. RE: Burks
    2. Hudson, Timothy D.
    3. About Nancy Burke Boatright: we are now not even certain she was married before she married Powhatan Boatright in July 1826. He gave her name as "Nancy Burk" on his War of 1812 pension application in 1873. Then there is a document that Jim Lee sent us in which Nancy Boatright sells the land of her mother, Mrs. Molly Burke (Molly Burke was living next to Powhatan Boatright in 1830 in Claiborne Parish LA and owned land jointly with Powhatan there). To me, this points to Powhatan being Nancy's first (and only) husband. If this is correct, who were the Burke children's parents? My grandmother (Fabrice Boatright Hudson) stated in her 1981 book on the Boatrights that Nancy was married prior to her marriage with Powhatan and that her name was "Nancy Eleanor". None of us have been able to find any documentation of either of these statements. Based upon the above documents, I now think my grandmother might have been mistaken about these two items. Thanks, Karen! I was just wondering if those who have been researching the Powhathan Boatwright family, if anyone knows what happen to Nancy Eleanor Burk's children by a previous marriage. Lucinda married Green Davis (my g-g-great Uncle) and raised a family in Union Parish; but I need some info on her sister, Molly and brother, J. J. Burk. Help! I no longer live at Farmerville (Union Parish). We sold our home there and relocated back in West Monroe (Ouachita) in February. I miss hitting the back roads and searching the cemeteries. My next hit will be the Ouachita Parish Library Genealogy Department. I have heard it was great! Mary-Davis Odom

    3. Dena, I'm sure you've already checked this out but I found only two Calberts on the 1870 Louisiana census index from Heritage Quest, both in Carroll Parish, page 267. Check page 18A, 1870 Union Parish census, line 14 and 15. The name appears to be Culbert, Green, age 35 and wife Mary, age 35.

    1. Union Parish tax records
    2. Hudson, Timothy D.
    3. Union Parish has no extant tax records prior to 1864. I don't know where the 1864 tax list is, but someone published a statewide 1864 tax list many years ago (the book was in the Ouachita Parish Library in Monroe in the 1980s). The Louisiana Archives has Union Parish tax records on microfilm beginning in 1865 and going into the 1900s, with some individual years missing. Unfortunately, although they are incredibly useful, it would be an enormous task to prepare a list of taxpayers for even one entire year. The microfilm is difficult to read and I have found it very time-consuming to study these tax lists. But someone were to have the time to decifer and transcribe the tax records, it would be great! I have the precise microfilm reel numbers for the tax records at the Louisiana Archives, if anyone is interested. There is one early Ouachita Parish tax list, 1837. This list includes some taxpayers from the "Piney Woods" or "D'Arbonne" who we know lived in what became Union Parish in 1839. I'll send those names to Karen. 2. Hi Ya'll. In my haste I deleted email from a kind person on this list who asked about the families I am researching. I am descended from DURRETTs and CUMMINGS (CULBERTSON, KIRKLAND, PAYNE) and on my father's side near Delhi, LA i am descended from the HALLs and POOL(E)s. MILLARD BANKS DURRETT is my maternal grandfather. He and my grandmother, LELA MAE CUMMINGS DURRETT lived just east of Arcadia towards Simsboro on Hwy 80 (i believe). My PaPa had a little country store at the top of a hill before you turn on (what we called) The Girl Scout Road....that was taken over by Tom CATHEY for many years, then left to ruin. Anyway lots of great memories staying with them in the summers, and getting to play store while my PaPa snoozed and listened to the baseball games on crackly radio. R. Mae
