    3. Hey, gang!! We have our first volunteer! Bruce Odom volunteered to transcribe 1840. Anyone else looking to volunteer may notice that 1870 has been assigned to me by the Census Project. I don't know why they did this - I don't remember volunteering, but I think Judy or Leah one said they wanted to do 1870 - and I'd be happy for you to take it. I can do any of them, or if we get volunteers for all 4, I'll volunteer to proofread them. I am going to enclose here the instructions I sent Bruce for volunteering to transcribe: The steps are this: Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~census/volunteer/tran.htm Once there, click on the hyperlink that says "Sign Up" -- there you select the year "18_0" and enter your name, e-mail address, and operating system. Then select Louisiana and type in Union Parish and hit submit. At that point it should take you somewhere to load the template to use in transcribing so your transcription will fit the uniform standard. Let me know if you have any problems, and thanks!! 1. NEW ON THE ARCHIVES TONIGHT !!! AND CENSUS NEWS !!!!
    2. Karen Rice
    3. Hi Gang, Hope you're all enjoying your summer vacations - you're sure quiet! Tonight we have 11 new items on the Archives, thanks to Brenda Gray Felder. She sent a Bible Record for the Coleman Tucker family, a history of the Coleman Tucker family (which is on the Parish History subpage), and 8 obits, as follows: Victor Granvil Albritton, 2001 Aubrey A. Barrett, 1990 Arelia "Shorty" Breed, 1998 Kathleen Redden Elliott, 2001 A. T. McLemore, 1990 Hershel E. Pardue, Sr., 1990 Lizzie B. Pennington, 2001 Martin A. Porter, 1990 And - BEST OF ALL - the 1859 Voter Registration List for Union Parish!! There are lots and lots of familiar names on this one - 167 in all. Also, Brenda sent me a xerox of the original list and I transcribed from that - the handwriting was spidery, sometimes cramped, and mostly hard to read, so if anyone sees any names you know are in error - please, please send me corrections!! AND - saving the best for last - well, at least the news you've all been anxiously awaiting - I just received the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 Censuses from Blue Roses Publishing. I will send the CD's to Linda Lewis at USGenWeb tomorrow so the images can be loaded onto the server. I honestly don't know how long the process takes, but I'll let you know as soon as she has it done. Then Judy and Leah, and whoever else is willing to volunteer, and I can begin the process of transcribing and creating the indeces for these four censuses. I know we were hoping for a copy of the 1920 census also, but the microfilm the lady at Blue Roses got turned out to be unscannable - so we may have to settle for a transcription and index only, if Ancestry.com gets readable images. I told her to use the money for the 1840 Census, so at least we will have a complete run from the founding of the Parish to 1910. 3. Thanks to Debbie Richard we have two new items on the Archives tonight. An obit from 1899 for James Pearson, and the court record from August 30, 1899 from the Farmerville Gazette. There are several names mentioned in the article, including one of my great-uncles who got himself sued for $440 (he lost) - quite a sum for those days. I put this one in the "Newspapers" section, not in "Court Records." Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

    3. I am looking for any information anyone might have on my great grandmothers family that lived and is buried in union parish. My great grandmothers name was Mary (Brown) Murphy. She died at the age of 38 and my grandfather (her son J. D. Murphy) was raised by her sister whose name was Eddie (Brown) Ellison. My g grandmothers parents were Henry Thomas and Mary Brown. They are both buried in Farmerville cemetery and died in the 1930's. I know that they had 18 children. So far the only children's names that I know are Mary (Brown) Murphy, Eddie (Brown) Ellison, Milo Brown, Hardy Brown, and Bessie (Brown) Dailey. If anyone has any more info on this family it would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is kcjs@texoma.net. Thank you Kelly Carter

    3. Hannah Eugenia Denton was the daughter of Eli and Mary Ann Puckett Denton. Eli was born in July 1820 in NC and died Sept. 1896 in Union Parish, LA. He married Mary Ann on Feb 19, 1846 in Union Parish, LA. Mary Ann was born Jan 1828 in MS. I do not have a death date but I assume she died in Union Parish, LA. Eli is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Union Parish, LA. This is all the information that I have on them at this time but I have requested succession records on Eli and a copy of the marriage record. Hope this helps. -- Angela Weaver Researching: Denton, Sanders, Hill, Webb, Heller, Hartley, Weaver, Wyatt, Miller, Sipes, Ramage, and Applegate, ---- DEBI BURGESS <adventurers@worldnet.att.net> wrote: > On 09 Jan. 1859, William M. 3. Debi, There seems to be a lot of mysteries in Union Parish like that. I have a John Wood who's daughter Manetta married Robert Francis Farrar. Their daughter Etta was my great grandmother. I cannot find her burial place as of yet nor does John seem to have a final resting spot or even a past. Who were Susan's parents? I know one lady who could probably answer your question but she doesn't use a computer that I know of. Do you live in the Ark-La-Tex? I'll try to find out from relatives if she has a computer or not. She is such a go getter never say die person she'll out live all of us. Debra

    3. To all you wonderful submitters, I apologize for taking so long to get the new stuff up, but we decided to take a little road trip Fri & Sat. 4,000 mi & 2 wk in CA just wasn't enough for us!! We have: OBITUARIES - obit for John Manning, 1911 - submitted by David Manning. (alphabetical order) PARISH HISTORY - Two letters home to Union Parish from Robert F. McAdams, during the Civil War, 1863 - submitted by Shawn Martin. (alphabetical order) PHOTOGRAPHS - Penelope Dildy McAdams Garner & Thomas Franklin Garner, late 1800s - submitted by Shawn Martin (I've just been slapping the newest photo at the top of the page lately - eventually I hope to get them grouped by families and somewhat alphabetical.) VIRTUAL CEMETERY - tombstone pics for Samuel E. & Harriett Lewis and A.J. Bagwell, Downsville Cemetery - submitted by Sylvia Bryan. (alphabetical order by name on marker - eventually I hope to group these by cemetery name.) By the way, Sylvia thought she had a photo of Mahulda Lewis Bagwells marker (d/o of Samuel & Harriett, w/o A.J.), but apparently it didn't come out. Is there anyone on the list who lives in UP who might be willing to take that pic for her? 2. HAROLD PHILLIPS
    3. Regarding an e-mail from Barbara Waldrop concerning researching of Sellers, Mason, and Peterson families of Union Parish La. and Union co. Arkansas, my grandmother's name was Lottie Peterson.. All I really know about her is that she was a Peterson from Louisiana, probably from the Ark./Louisiana Union Parish area, since she married my grandfather who was from Union co. (Strong) Ark. Her father (name unknown) was born in Louisiana and her mother was born in Ark. She was born in Feb. 1881 and married my grandfather, Lewis Edward (Guy) Taylor when she was about 19. Of her 3 living children, my father, Ainsley, was the oldest. He was about 9 at the time. My grandfather married again and no one kept up with the Peterson side of the family. My Dad didn't know anything about them at all. If you have any information regarding this Peterson branch I would appreciate receiving it. Thanks, Lynda Phillips
