Yes, Jasper, and I think our Union Parish ancestors would be proud of us. Roy Austin has just spoken up to donate the 1870 census, so the only one left is 1900, if you're interested. We have a revision of the Weldon Baptist Church history that Hazel Craig sent us in Feb - this one has the names of the 28 pastors who served from 1900 to 2000. And we have the Cedar Grove (Terral) Cemetery thanks to Mary Davis-Odom and her friend Beverly Brunelle of Caspar, Wyoming. Thanks, Hazel and Mary!!!! Here's the latest. Diane Smith is donating the 1880 census. Mary Odom is donating the 1840 Census. I have hand copied the first 12 pages of the 1920 census and have put 1 page into Centrans, the database program. This site may be of help to someone. Dog Tags Found In Viet Nam On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went to Hanoi on a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI dog tags from US servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War. They were disgusted by the thought of this man profiting from the sale of these tags. Upon returning to the US, they decided to go back to Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags. They did so, paying 19 cents per tag! They brought home several hundred tags. The plan is to return the tags to surviving family members, when they can find them. The process has already begun with one set being turned over to a grieving Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)! These two men have set up a website, http://www.founddogtags.com listing the names of all those whose tags they purchased. If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one in Viet Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a name, there's an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help in their efforts to return the dogtag to it's rightful survivor. I'm sure a family member would be eternally grateful to have such an important item returned. Please help by checking this website. And please send the website address to everyone you know. The more people who see the lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those who lost loved ones in Viet Nam!
Karen, What type of program do we need to do all of these transcriptions? Charlotte Plakiotis
Looking for help. I have 4 church histories that were sent by a list member. I feel we should be able to find a way to put them on the archives. Like, if the authors are local, or the journals they were published in can be identified so we can get permissions. First is a history of Pisgah Baptist Church, it looks to be a xerox of the original, and is not copyrighted. The author is Inez Holder - does anyone know her? Second is a short 2 pg. history of Mt. Union Baptist Church, Spearsville, LA. It doesn't credit an author, and looks to have been published in a genealogical journal of some kind - the page numbers are 155 and 156. Third is a 5 1/2 page history of the First Baptist Church, Spearsville, LA. The author is Bertha Cole, and it appears to have been published in a genealogical journal - the page numbers are 52 through 57. Fourth is a 16 page history of Culbertson Church by Nina Bethany Gill. It also appears to have been published in a genealogical journal and the pages are 51 through 67. Will appreciate any suggestions. Hello Group, I have changed my e,mail address it is now dmannin2@bellsouth.net. David P. Manning
Thank you Bruce, Mary Margaret, and Alice for volunteering to do the census transcriptions. Karen, thank you so much for all of your efforts - again; however, isn't there any other copy available of the 1920 census image? I'd really hate to see you "burned out" as our site coordinator if you have to take a year on this project, too. You're creative and talented - and shouldn't have to be copying the 1920 list twice. Suggestions or help, anyone? I truly can't help out on this project but wish that I could. Allana Bosch is graciously becoming the donor of the 1910 Census. Since I have a membership at Ancestry.com, I'm handwriting on census forms the info that is on the 1920 Census. If I get it all done, I will then transcribe it according to the standard template for that census year. So far, I've done 4 of 403 pages (averaging 2 a day) - and that means it will take more than a year, even if I'm able to work at it every day - which I'm not. There's got to be a better way! Allana and Chris, That is a true gift of the heart. I am sure everyone appreciates your patronage. I know I do.
I am resending this because three people's isp's rejected my last e-mail - probably because I used the word Worm32 in the subject line. They were Jan Craven, J. Feazel, and Mary Margaret S-T. I have run the fix tool, and do not have the virus in my computer, probably because I didn't open any of the attachments as Carolyn did. I can't stress enough - don't open attachments if you don't know the sender, or if you do know the sender, but the body of the message looks strange - like the one below - or if the attachment has an unfamiliar ending, not .txt. or .wpd or .jpg or .gif or the ones you are not used to seeing. You shouldn't get any attachments on this list, because the Rootsweb server rejects them, but apparently the people sending this thing are capable of invading our computers and lifting our addresses out of our e-mail address books and looking at the subject lines on our recent mailings. Just be careful. Just want to warn everyone about a virus that is going around. It is a Worm32 virus, can do a lot of damage. It always arrives with a different sender and a different subject, but the same message in the body, which is: "Hi! How are you? I send you this file in order to have your advice See you later. Thanks" In the last two weeks I have received about five of them at work, and about eight of them at home. If I hadn't received all the others, I might have opened the one I got this morning, because it came from someone on this list and had the subject "census." I suspect both the address they used and the subject line came out of my own computer. The attached file is what contains the virus, so just delete it and you are safe. If your virus alert isn't updated, I'd advise you keep it updated. The attached files on this one are either .pif or something equally obscure you've probably never heard of. We received this on the LAARCHIVE List earlier in the week, so I'm sharing it with all of you. "I opened an e-mail asking for advice and got a virus. Thanks, Karen. I'd like to donate the cost of the 1910 Census image for the site. If this date is important to someone else, I'll take the 1900 census instead. They both have a special meaning to me and I'm honored to be able to help in sharing this important bit of history with others. Please send me your snail mail address and I'll send a check for the $57 price listed below. Thanks again to you and everyone else for all of your help with finding my Gray and Shackelford family roots. Months age there were discussions of donations for purchasing our Census Record files. I don't remember the costs but I think there was a charge for each year. Better late than never, I'd like to make a donation, now. If not already chosen, I'd like to pay the costs for the 1910 census as my father and grandparents should be included there. If you prefer, the donation can go to the overall costs. Karen, will you please let us know how to help with contributions to this important project? It will help others for years to come.. Hi Gang, Well, be sure to go and look at that voter's list - one, Helen Stout found three of her relatives on it, AND she caught an error I didn't even realize I made in the transcription - I had J. A. Byram, and it should have been Q. A. Byram. Well, hey - I'm not perfect! <g> Good news - besides Bruce volunteering to transcribe the 1840 Census, Mary Margaret Selig-Trahan volunteered to do the 1870, and Alice Ogles is interested in doing one - not sure of the year yet. Karen, Thank you for this document. I found several of my surnames on this list. Unfortunately I did not find some that I had hope to find. I think that the J. A. Byram may be Q. A. Byram. My great-grandmother married last Quincy A. Byram and I believe that this is who that is. Listed very near his name is R. C. Howell, great-grandmothers' second husband. This letter is also to the list to let everyone know that I have a new e-mail address. When my computer crashed I lost all my address book information. I have corresponded with several on the list and this is the only way I know to get my new e-mail address to everyone. Thanks, Ruth Stout rstout1@mindspring.com
