I've been viewing the new census images that you guys have put up for Union Parish. These are just great and I want to add my BIG thank you for the work and expense some of you have undertaken. They are so much easier to view than Ancestry's images. Thanks again for a great job! Debi
I am as thrilled as everyone else about all the Union Parish Census that have been placed online. BUT .... I cant see them and have perfect vision and even installed the magnifier on my computer that our legally blind daughter uses and tryed it and we still cant see the images as well as other Census online say... like the Jackson Co., Alabama Census. Could someone tell me what I should do to see these images. My Union Parish Surnames are WARD, SAWYER, LEE, TAYLOR, SEALE ; PARDUE, SKAINS, WALL, CAVER Thank You Kindly JoAnn Ward McBride djm@etex.net

I am forwarding this very useful message from Pam Holloway for all of us who are transcribing censuses. I am using Windows ME and "Accessibility" is already set up in Programs/Accessories - may be that way in Windows 2000, also. Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: PamCat1954@aol.com To: aberizn1@gte.net Sent: Sunday, August 19, 2001 4:58 PM Subject: Re: Regarding Censuses Karen, If you have Windows 98, there is a program called "Accessibility". You can open that and click on "magnifier" and it puts the magnifed image above what you are working on. I did that for the census and I can read them much better. I didn't have Accessiblity in my programs menu but I was able to get it off the Windows 98 disk. After you install it, you go to "Start", "Programs", "Accessories" and open it from there. It stays up until you close it. Pam Holloway
Thanks you to the kind folks who put the census on the Parish site. I found out that my husband's g-grandmother did have an older sibling by looking in the 1900 census. I have found other goodies like his g-grandfather living with/working for a family whose name I cannot make out :-). Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! i would also like to know if the Farmerville and/or Farmerville City Cemetery(ies)have ever been transcribed? Thanks! Karen and All, I have been off line for over a week( computer trouble) but now it is partly fixed. So I began working on the 1880 census. I don't think I knew what I was getting myself into! My glasses don't seem to be strong enough! I may need a white cane after this - Ha Ha. I worked on page one for over two hours and finally finished it as much as I could. I left a lot of blank places that I couldn't read. After printing this one out I'll go to the library and check it from the microfilm. The other pages should go a little faster since I had to learn the program - I'm hoping they won't be as hard to read. I f anyone would like to help me let me know. Otherwise it might take 5 years to complete!!! Now, on to page two. Alice
A really big thanks to all who have contributed some much great material to the Union Parish site. It is absolutely the best. Have a question: where can one find a map of Union Parish that would show Wards? Thanks, Larrie Spier Curry lscurry@kih.net
Thanks Jim and Debbie for the wonderful job on the 1900 census. Sure beats the Images On Line that I have been struggling with for 6 months. Karen, you have made this site the best ever....thanks for all your hard work coordinating, etc. I just can't tell you how much it means to me and I am sure many, many others. Wilma Williams, Calif.
In response to this morning's missive, Allana Bosch has decided to take a shot at 1910, but she sure would like some co-transcribers. Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Just wanted to let Mary Margaret and Alice know - if you have trouble reading something, there are those of us who can save a specific image into a photo manipulation program - like Adobe Photo Shop - and enlarge a portion of it to see if we can read it any easier than you can. I, for one, volunteer to do that. If anyone else on the list would be willing to do the same, let them know. Bruce, I can do the same for you as soon as I get the 1840 CD. Also, for those of you who want to get involved, but think a whole census might be too big a project, there are a couple of ways we can do this - several people could volunteer to transcribe part of a census, teamwork, yah know? Or there is a census index project. You just index the names of the heads of households by page number and gif file number. This is easy because you do it in a data base program like Excell or Access and then have the data base program alphabetize it for you. Mary Margaret and Alice and Bruce and I and future volunteers are also going to need proofreaders for our completed work before it goes up on the archives. So everyone be thinking about this, and in the meantime be proud of what a wonderful group of volunteers you are. Linda just overlooked the 1900 Census, donated by Jim Parks and Debi Burgess (THANKS, JIM & DEBI!!) when uploading. (Can't imagine why - we just sent her four times what she usually gets!! <g>) It is on the Archives tonight and ready to view. It's one of the most readable I've ever seen. This one too, like 1910 is looking for a transcriber. If anyone wants to thank Linda Lewis for her hard work in getting our images online, her address is cityslic@ix.netcom.com. If anyone wants to thank Mary at Blue Roses Publishing for the fine job of getting our CD's ready at a price that wasn't highway robbery and donating them for viewing, her address is roses.blue@verizon.net . You all know the other donors that are on this list. Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Pardon my excitement, but tonight has been exciting. Roy Austin's and Jim Park's checks arrived in the mail tonight, which spurred me to think, "I ought to e-mail Linda and find out when we might see our images online." My e-mail arrived just as she was composing one to me to let me know the images were uploaded! To quote Linda, "What timing!" Of course, the 1840 images are not up yet, because I haven't gotten the CD from Blue Roses yet, so I haven't sent it to Linda yet. And I'm not sure why yet, but I'm waiting to hear from Linda as to why the 1900 wasn't among the images uploaded. May have been because I sent her the 1900 and 1910 in a double CD case and she overlooked it. Let you know as soon as I know. But in the meantime, go look at Roy Austin's 1870 Census (THANKS, ROY!!) - all ready for you to start transcribing, Mary Margaret! and go look at Diane Smith's 1880 Census (THANKS, DIANE!!) - all ready for the anxious Alice Ogles to get her fingers on! and go look at Allana Bosch's 1900 (THANKS, ALLANA!!) - maybe some brave soul will want to transcribe it soon. Be patient Mary and Debi and Jim - 1840 and 1900 will be with us soon! Thanks, to all you great folks!! "We're the best!!" to paraphrase Jim Parks. Thanks to Russell C. Adams who wrote it and Gina Sherrard who submitted it, we have a history of Mt. Tabor, 1874-1995. Lots of recognizable names there, including a couple of my great-uncles! Thanks, Russell and Gina! Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Three wonderful contributions today from cousin Allana Gray Bosch. Three photos - one of the entire J.P. Shackelford family in 1904 in front of their dogtrot cabin. There are Shackelfords, Byrams, Nutts, Mabrys, and Fitzgeralds in this photo. This is a very large one and you will have to scroll back and forth and up and down to see it all, but I left it that way on purpose - the architectural details visible on the cabin that is just like the ones all our grandparents built are too fascinating to miss. The second one is JP & wife Sarah Madora Byram in their middle or later years. The third one is Douglas & Lillie Gray - their wedding picture in Pisgah in 1904 and their 50th anniversary in 1954. Thanks, Allana!! Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Hi gang, We had an exciting thing happen this weekend. Remember the school photo Bobby Bayles submitted in which the school and year were unidentified, but the names of all the students were written on the photo? A lady in Phoenix, AZ, who descends from the Nolans was able to get her aunt to identify the school and the year! I enclose a copy of her e-mail to Bobby, which I've also appended to the original text file describing the photo. "Hello, B. Bayles, Your unidentified school is Antioch School, in or near the community I've heard referred to as "Nip and Tuck". My mother, Hettie (spelled "Heddie" in the photo) Jane Nolan Stradley, is in your photograph--the photo with Ira Aulds on the back row--of the unidentified Union Parish school. Mother is shown on the Front row, standing (although she's apparently seated on something) and is wearing a big white bow in her hair. Three of her siblings, all now deceased, are also pictured. (Nettie Mae Nolan, Dave Nolan and Bob "Bo" Nolan.) Mother and Bob started first grade the same year, 1918, when she was barely seven years old--in 1918. Their younger sister, Bessie Louise Nolan, started first grade the following year; however, she is not pictured, so the school year of 1918-1919 is established. I talked to Aunt Bess (married name Cartlidge), who now lives in Dumas, Texas, and she remembers the school very well. Thanks for submitting your photograph. It has given many family members a glimpse into the past that we'd never have known without your gesture. Chloe Stradley Webb Phoenix, Arizona" Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Jim Parks and Debi Burgess are sharing the donation of the 1900 census, so now all our censuses have been spoken for. 1900 and 1910 are still available for transcription. Another step in the process is proofreading when the volunteers get done with the transcribing, if anyone wants to be thinking about that. I'm making a little progress on the 1920. I've hand-copied the first 20 (of 403) pages. Have put two of those pages into the Centrans program GenWeb provides. It's a beta program and has some drawbacks, so I'm thinking about going to a template in Excel or Access.
