Hello! Does anyone have access to the Union Parish Cemetery Books? If so, could you please check for me and see if you can find a listing for George Gunby? I am trying to help a friend find her ancestor's grave. Thanks! Debbie Richard
Does anyone have any information on Mary Ann GOOLSBY who married Henry W. HOWELL in Union Parish 17 Feb 1881? I can't find a trace of them after their marriage. Did they move somewhere else? Can't find a burial listed in my cemetery books. I am wondering if she is the same daughter of Susanna FARRAR GOOLSBY HENDERSON? Debi Burgess
I'm just beginning to try to track the Tabor geneology. My father, Gussie Jewel Tabor was born in Union Parish, La or Union Co, Ark in 1902-03. His mother was Minnie (Boyter) Tabor who later married a Mr. Hasty and is buried in the Minden, La cemetary. He had one brother Robert Tabor (obituary says he was born in Huttig, Ark and is buried at Pineville, La) I'm trying to find the name of his father, my grandfather. Thanks in advance for any assistance. John E. Tabor . e-mail is johnetabor@cs.com.
Does anyone have any information on these families? I have Wm. M. GOULDSBY married Susanna FARRAR in Union County, AR 09 Jan 1859 They lived in Union Parish, LA. They had two children that I have listed. NOTE: Sometimes the name is spelled GOLDSBY, GOOLSBY, GOLSBY and GOULDSBY. John Sanford GOULDSBY born 05 Dec 1859. He married Hannah Eugenia DENTON in Union Parish on 17 Dec 1885. They are both buried in Laran Cemetery. He died 04 FEb 1940. She died 16 June 1942. They had one daughter that I found Zulah GOLSBY buried also at Laran Cemetery with the date of 01 March 1893. Mary Ann GOOLSBY married Henry W. HOWELL 17 Feb 1881 in Union Parish. Susanna FARRAR GOULDSBY married Willliam HENDERSON 12 Feb 1868. I descend from their daughter Della who married John Wes Elliott. I am trying to obtain more information about Susanna's first marriage and their descendents. Thanks for any help. Debi Burgess
Hi gang, Well here's my status as far as working on the censuses. I have 28 pages handcopied from the 1920 Union Parish census, and 18 pages entered into Centrans, the database transcription program. Last week, I discovered that the 1830 Ouachita (our parent parish) census only had 7 pages, so Idecided to transcribe it. It is transcribed, but I need a proofreader, and the only volunteer proofreader signed up for LA will only work on 1920 censuses. Anyone on this list interested in proofreading it for me? Of course, you would have to have access to the 1820 Ouachita Parish census in some form. (hint: I used the images at Ancestry.com - they can only copyright their images, not the public information contained in them) If so, let me know. By the way, there is some really interesting information in this census - a lot of recognizable names like Feazel and Moore and Gresham and Shaw and Ward and Mayberry, more French names than later on, and one family of free colored persons that owned slaves. Lots of widows, and they only list them as "Widow So and So" - no first names, unlike the men. Thanks, Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

Debi, you've made my day. This is wonderful! I believe you are probably correct about M. Bennett being the wife of John Bennett, JR. In the 1850 Union Parish census, there is a John Bennett in the 1850 census with Margarett Bennett. It says John Bennett was born in NC. Thanks for your kind assistance. Now I have lots of clues and possibilities to check out. I don't know where Nancy Smith may have died. Louisa James died in Hall County, Texas in 1924. Thanks again for your help. First, another wonderful photo from Wanda Fuller - Richard Tubb Moore and some gentelemen named Grafton, Fuller, James, and Hamilton. Maybe one of these or the unnamed few is YOUR great-grandfather - go see!!!! The incredible Timothy D. Hudson has been at it again - with his usual meticulous research methods, he has gifted us with 19 obits and 12 newspaper articles. Obits: Mrs. Wesley Guthrie, 1866 Mrs. Lidwell, 1873 Mary Ann Cann, 1872 L. G. Campbell, 1882 Judge W.W. Farmer, 1883 Judge Taylor, 1878 Hy. Bartlett, 1873 Henry Regenburg, 1868 Henry Newton Murry, 1878 H. F. Stinson, 1871 George Rossiter, 1880 Ellen Rebecca Everett, 1867 Dr. L. Larch, 1877 As usual, these are strictly alphabetical. I have a plan afoot to subdivide the obits by decades, alphabetized with each decade. Will take some time, though. Newspaper Articles: Neecy Hardin, Suicide by Drowning, 1877 Accidental Discharge of Pistol Causes Death, 1873 Jackson Jones Stabs Pleas Coleman, 1872 Archy Walls Shot to Death, 1877 Dick Auld Accidentally Hung, 1882 Fire Destroys Mr. Stein's Dry Goods Store in Farmville, 1883 Freezing Rain Causes Excessive Death, 1879 Grand Jury Investigates Killing of Negro Man by D. S. McFarland, 1883 Jack Overstreet Hung for Murder, 1879 Killing of W. H. Baker, 1879 Mattie Dozier Drowns Self in Fit of Insanity, 1882 Thomas Taylor Dies of Hydrophobia, 1882 Thanks, Wanda!!! Dr. Gaskel is mentioned in an 1861 diary found online. Possibly he was a minister of the gospel also, but the following confirms he was known as Dr. Gaskel: Friday, December 27, 1861 early this morning I (left) for home, stopping at Dr. Gaskels where I stayed all night and enjoyed myself. Well how pleasant it is to renew old friendships. It makes one think of meeting in Heaven where parting will be no more. Saturday, December 28, 1861 I left Brother Gaskel's early and got back to Brother Gin's for Dinner. The balance of the evening I spent in riding round amongst my old friends(?) and settling up my business. Stayed all night with Helsy M. Clendon. (?) Sharon In the Union Parish, Louisiana, Marriage Records for 1839-1900 by John C. Head Volume 1 page 5 John SMITH and Nancy THOMPSON 26 Dec 1850 Almost all of the years 1857-1865 are missing so I can't find your other marriage. I will look this afternoon in cemetery books for more info. Debi Burgess Sharon Jung wrote: > > I found a family listed in the 1860 Union Parish census that > could be mine. I found a family listed in the 1860 Union Parish census that could be mine. I've been looking for a Nancy Bennett who married a Thompson. Listed under Family 10, Shiloh PO, is Head of Household- Nancy C. Smith, age 42 born TN, also in the household are A. D. Thompson, Female, age 16, b. KY; J. Thompson, male Age 24, b. KY and M. Bennett, female, age 70 yrs, b. NC. Am wondering if my Nancy remarried a Smith after her husband died and if the M. Bennett in the house was her mother. Does anyone know anything about any of of the persons listed? I have a copy of an official looking marriage certificate that says my ggrandmother, Louisa May Thompson, daughter of Nancy Bennett and George Thompson, married Alfred A. James in Union Parish, LA in 1857. I had someone look in Union Parish and they couldn't find any record of this marriage. This is really a puzzle to me. The certificate says they were married by an A. D. Gaskill, Minister of the Gospel, in the home of A. Bennett. There is an A. D. Gaskill also listed two houses away. The census says his occupation says MD. Could the census taker have written MD when it should have been MG. Help! If anyone has an suggestions or can help, it will be most appreciated. Thanks. Tonight we have an obituary from 1910 for James Richard Simmons that was published in the Confederate Veteran, thanks to Judy Penrod Purcell. We also have a letter that was first written in 1851 in Union Parish, and published in the 1929 Farmerville Gazette, thanks to Tim Hudson. Will have about 30+ obits from the yrs 1866-1893 that Tim sent - will take me a few days to formatt and upload them. Thanks to Wanda Fuller we have a fantastic picture of the girls basketball team at Marion High School in 1910. Wanda identified her grandmother, Sallie Wade Hunt, and would like for anyone else whose grandma played on that team to identify them if they can. Even if you can't identify any of the young ladies, go take a look at the pic - my goodness, how did they play in those uniforms?!? Shiloh Church and Cemetery are located about 5 miles from Bernice on the highway to Farmerville. (LA 2) Its before you get to D'Arbonne Lake. The church is very close to the highway and the cemetery is beside the church with a fence around it. If you are going from Bernice towards Farmerville the church will be on your right. There are no other churches along that road that I can think of. I grew up about 3 miles from the church and attended it. My parents are buried there. Maradee Liggin Cryer
Kim, Welcome to our little group! You asked about the Shiloh Cemetery. I can't tell you where it is, but I do know that the library in Farmerville has a directory of Cemeteries for Union Parish. I live in Virginia, so I can't go there for a look-up. While visiting my parents, I did find the directory in their genealogy section, on a lower shelf by the microfilm reader. That is as specific as I can get for you. Shawn Martin
I am seeking information on Shiloh cemetery. I would like to know the exact > location and whether there is a directory there. > Thank you, > Kim Kyzer > Kim and Everyone on the Union Parish List: I have the following books and I am willing to do lookups as time permits. Union Parish Louisiana Marriage Records 1839-1900 compiled by John C. Head I have all 4 volumes of Cemetery Inscriptions of Union Parish, LA by W. C. Nolan If you need a look up email me at Adventurers@worldnet.att.net Give me the full names and possible dates if you have any. Debi Burgess
Shiloh is on Hwy 2 between Farmerville and Bernice--closer to Bernice than Farmerville (I think). There is a 4 volume Union Parish cemetery survey by W.C. Nolan and pub. by John and Wanda Head in 1988 (J&W Enterprises, 8505 Dixie Blanchard Road, Shreveport, LA 71107-8176, phone # 318-929-1730). I think they sell for about $20 each. Shiloh is in volume 1. Fred Hamilton fredh@cox-internet.com

Hi gang, I just want to welcome a new member to the mailing list. She is my cousin, Kim Kyzer. Her great-great-grandmother, Elmina Ruth Copeland, and my great-grandfather, Demetrius Colvin Copeland, were brother and sister. Now, you know I'm some kind of a cousin to just about everyone on this list, so give her a big ole UP welcome! She's going to visit Union Parish soon and wants some input. Speak up, Kim & tell 'em what you're looking for. Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
