    1. Stores in Union Parish
    2. Angela Weaver
    3. I am curious to know if anyone knows of a General Store that would have been located in Union Parish around the mid 1800's? The reason I ask is because my ggg grandfather has a journal of sorts that he kept around the mid 1800's that had lists of stuff that people bought...kinda like a running tab. It had stuff like flour, sugar, etc. He also had in this journal a listing of his children's births, marriages and deaths. -- Angela Weaver Researching: Denton, Sanders, Hill, Webb, Heller, Hartley, Weaver, Wyatt, Miller, Sipes, Ramage, and Applegate Visit the Panola County Heritage Website! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~panolacountyheritage/index.htm __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. 1. New photo - new cemeteries - big mistake - appeal for help
    2. Karen Rice
    3. Hi gang, Most recent additions to the Archives: A photo of the memorial marker at Concord Cemetery, contributed by J.R. "Doc" Calloway Three cemeteries from Gene Barron: Acree-Carter, Spearsville, and an alphabetized version of Beulah Baptist. Now, to my big mistake and appeal for help. The other night while uploading a file named "matthews," which was for a Matthews grave marker, contributed by J. R. "Bob" Reeves, I accidentally replaced a file named "matthews" which was a photograph of John Matthews contributed by Jane Hinton in March of 2000. I e-mailed Jane, and haven't heard from her - she may just not be active in genealogy right now. I seem to recall that someone - a male person on this Union Parish list - offered me another copy of that photo a while back. If I'm right, please let me know! 3. Wanda sent a list for the Spearsville school picture tonight with the people identified as to position. Remember, this was the 1930s - these folks would be in their 60s, at the most 70s. You may know some of them - you may BE some of them! J. R. "Doc" Calloway of south Texas sent the most wonderful photo of (his ancestor?), the Rev. Abner Josephus Callaway baptizing folks in the Bayou D'Loutre. I will have the 1830 Ouachita Census fully transcribed (21 pages) later tonight or tomorrow. I also have the images in files - one per page - that I can send anyone who is willing to proofread. Thanks, Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

    1. Grafton/McDonald Family Connection
    2. I am looking for someone on this mailing list that is familiar with the Grafton and McDonald families in Union Parish. I believe they may be somehow related to my Great Great Grandmother Nancy Ann Tate McDonald McGarity who died between 1900-1910 in Calhoun Co., MS. The following is what I do know. My great grandfather was Uriah William McGarity who changed his name to John Richard McGarity and is buried in the Spearsville Cemetery. John Richard's mother was Nancy Ann Tate McDonald. Nancy was born 11/17/1833 in SC (believed to be Chester Co). Her parents were Reuben McDonald (10/26/1798 Chester Co., SC - 7/27/1868 Calhoun Co., MS) and Nancy L. Grafton (2/1798 believed to be Chester Co.- 3/20/1864 Calhoun Co., SC). I have a picture of Reuben and Nancy's graves. Reuben McDonald's parents were William McDonald (d. 1830 Chester Co., SC) and Nancy Tate (ca. 1770 SC - ca. 1881 Chester Co., SC). Nancy Grafton's parents were William Grafton (d. 12/14/1847 Chester Co., SC) and Esther Stormant (5/5/1785 SC - 2/16/1886 Chester Co., SC). These names were given to me verbally by my grandmother and the dates I have obtained from McDonald list. My McGarity ancesters also migrated from Chester Co., SC to Union Parish, LA. The naming patterns between the three families are very similar. Another sibling of Rueben McDonald's that married a Grafton was Margaret Ann "Polly" McDonald. Polly married Daniel Grafton who was brother to Nancy Grafton, wife of Reuben McDonald. My grandmother told me the story of an Aunt of hers that died while migrating from Mississippi to Union Parish. The family continued the journey and buried the Aunt once they arrived in Union Parish. I believe she was buried in a cemetery in Marion. Unfortunately, I never wrote this story down or had grandma take me to the cemetery. Grandma believed her great uncle, William Thomas McDonald, migrated to Union Parish, but could not find any of his descendants. I have letters describing her search. If any of this sounds familiar to any of you, please let me know. I am trying to confirm that the Grafton and McDonald families are the ones my Grandmother was looking for before she died. 3. A great family photo and lots of informative accompanying text on the William R. Smith family in 1908 - thanks to Bob Reeves. For you Moore cousins, this family is related to the Moores. Karen Mabry Rice, USGenWeb Archives Coordinator Union Parish, Lousiana http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm Everyone has been awfully quiet lately. I know our country has had a devastating blow and had a rough two weeks. Perhaps genealogists know better than anyone else how dear our forbearers held this land - and when times get tough we find out we hold it just as dear. Be safe, and don't let this get you down. America will stand proud and free - just as it always has. Union Parish is a microcosm of America - very diverse, very individualistic - but united when it counts.

    1. FW: We are the Chosen
    2. Chris and Allana Bosch
    3. This article was sent to me by a lady from another list. I can't improve on what she said in her introduction as I believe that all of you will relate to both what she said and also to the following explanation of the genealogist's calling. We ARE the chosen! Allana Gray Bosch "Now I have an answer for those who ask me why am I so interested in the genealogy. They tell me not to waste time on the past but I see it as finding out who I am and why I am the way I am. I am a story teller. I want my family to know where they came from and why." Jane Foley WE ARE THE CHOSEN "My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us, "Tell our story." So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors, "You have a wonderful family. You would be proud of us." How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do. It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That is why I do my family genealogy and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones." (unknown)
