    1. RE: African American cemeteries in Union Parish
    2. Hudson, Timothy D
    3. As one is looking at the front of the Spearsville Cemetery from the road, to the right of the cemetery, outside the fence and a short distance out in the woods, there are some tombstone markers. Some were still standing the last time I was there, but some were broken. I was told these stones marked the graves of black residents of Spearsville. I wish someone would research this further and fence these graves in with the other burials at Spearsville. Tim Hudson -----Original Message----- From: Karen Rice To: LAUNION-L@rootsweb.com Sent: 12/15/01 12:14 PM Subject: African American cemeteries in Union Parish Here are the responses so far on the African American cemeteries: "Karen, your requested information on cemeteries where black people are buried. Near the end of the Liberty Hill (Old Taylor) Cemetery listing, there is a section where black people are listed. Also there is an ABANDONED black cemetery on the other side of the fence of the Zion Hill Cemetery. It is so old and grown up that no one has been able to record it. There is a black cemetery at the (Black) Zion Hill Baptist Church, located on Parish Road #6606 north of Farmerville. It has not been surveyed unless it is listed in Mr. Nolan's Cemetery Books. Mary" "There is a Black Cemetery on Alt #2, a few miles west of Bernice toward Summerfield. The cemetery is west of Mt. Olive Cem. maybe half a mile, then north of Alt #2 1/4 to 1/2 mile. Few years ago there was road to cemetery. Don't know condition but has been active until present I'm sure. Used heavy in 60/70/80's. People came even from Arkansas to this cemetery. I don't know name of cemetery. Someone at Kilpatrick Funeral Home should know name of it. It's near old Lewis Gresham farm. Home has been restored and beautiful. Hazel" "There is a very old unused black cemetary in the Wall's Lake area on the Ouachita River. There is also another one west of Sterlington and south of Hwy. 2 a couple of miles -- still active. I can get details on these if anyone is interested. Kelby" I putting these on the list, because I know we have a couple of African American ladies on the list, and I'm wondering if either of you are contact with some cousins who might be talked into going out and surveying these cemeteries? While looking for my great grandmother's grave, I did notice there were some African Americans buried there. I believe their last name was Burks. The cemetery is just over the Ouachita Parish line in Union Parish. There was also graves from a Dr. Richardson. Where the cemetery is was once called Walnut Lane, Louisiana in 1914. I saw the town listed when I obtained a copy of my great uncle's marriage license. I am wondering if this was an Indian town at one time. Nancy

    3. In my last communication I intended to quote something Mary Odom said when she sent me Shady Grove Cemetery, because it was so wonderful and so true. So here it is: "It is so nice to find people that are interested in our Union Parish Website, isn't it? Mary" And while I was busily writing to tell you about all the new stuff, Tim sent something you might want to take a peek at. He sent a revised prologue for the July 1885 Home Advocate which tells more about the Trimble/Lewis/Ramsey fued and how they finally shot each other to death in the streets of Farmerville on Christmas eve. And if I forgot to mention it for my Mabry cousins on the list, go take a peek at the revised version of "The Homicide at Shiloh, 1885." Scroll down to the bottom for "the last word." Karen

    3. We now have Shady Grove Cemetery, surveyed by Paul Tolbird and submitted by Mary Davis-Odom. Tim has finished the September, October, and November 1885 abstracts and they are in the newspaper files. I formatted these at work, and I forgot I have a 19" monitor there, so I made the sentences too long without a wrap. It will make it hard for those of you with smaller monitors to read, and I apologize. As soon as I get some spare time I will re-formatt them. Now, the qestion about cemeteries. Recently my friend Stephanie, who does the African American Archives for Louisiana asked if we had any new African American Cemeteries up. I realized that - other than supposing that some of the cemeteries - like maybe Shiloh? - because they had African Americans listed on the membership rolls during slave times - also have African American sections, like Springhill Cemetery does - that I don't know if any of the cemeteries on that list of place names on the Parish History page are African American or not. Some must be. Also, in these articles Tim is abstracting, some people are referred to as being interred in the Jewish Cemetery. Does anyone know which one that is, and whether or not any of the ones on the list have either an African American section or are an African American cemetery? Every time I think I've learned a bit about Union Parish history, I find nine new things I don't know! Karen

    1. Latest virus
    2. I just received this message from our LSU Web Master. So be warned. (Mac users are exempt we think) Maradee ** Latest Worm Attacks Antivirus Apps A new Visual Basic Script virus is rapidly spreading via E- mail and the ICQ instant-messaging system, shutting down most antivirus and desktop security apps. The worm, dubbed the Goner virus, greets targets with the subject "Hi" and the text reads: "How are you? When I saw this screensaver, I immediately thought about you. I am in a hurry, I promise you will love it!" What users really download is Gone.scr, a copy of the compressed worm. If the file is opened, the worm tries to destroy all security apps. A back door is installed, linked to an Internet Relay Chat program, and the app can be used to launch denial-of-service attacks against Internet Relay Chat servers. "This thing is spreading far faster than Badtrans," says Russ Cooper, surgeon general with security firm TruSecure Corp., referring to another mass-mailer virus that struck users hard over Thanksgiving weekend. Secure E-mail company MessageLabs says it has stopped more than 30,000 copies of Goner with its antivirus software, and the company is seeing Goner arrive with one out of every 30 E-mails. According to MessageLabs, the Love Bug virus arrived with one out of every 28 E-mails. Most antivirus vendors placed Goner as a medium risk earlier in the day, but by late Tuesday afternoon it became apparent that Goner was spreading faster than many expected. "We don't know why it's spreading so fast," Cooper says. "Anyone who experienced Badtrans would have protected against .scr attachments. "He says Goner has hit many large companies hard. "Very few people block attachments at the gateway. And desktop users did not have their antivirus updated, so it reached critical mass." Given the risks, many experts are surprised that companies let potentially dangerous attachments enter their E-mail systems. - George V. 3. Dear Lynda, The 1926 Farmerville "Gazette" can be found on microfilm in the Union Parish Library in Farmerville and the Hill Memorial Library on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. I do not know if it is available in other locations, but I would imagine that some library in New Orleans has it. I do not have access to the 1926/1929 issues myself. If you can't find a New Orleans library with these issues, you could write or email the Hill Memorial Library in Baton Rouge, give them the dates of death, and ask that they check a few issues for an obituary. Don't know if they will respond to this request or not, but it is worth a try. Good luck! 1. Virus information
    2. This past week I have received no less than 8 e-mails with a virus attached. These came from genealogy and gardening contacts. Since I use a Macintosh computer they do not affect me. However to be on the safe side I delete without opening any e-mail with a file extention that I do not recognize. Below is an e-mail that was sent out on my gardening list. Its explains the viruses and give the extention names to watch for. Maradee Liggin Cryer ...................................................... <<Just wanted to warn you all, there seems to be a rash of virus/worms spreading like wild fire through the gardening groups.  I have received at least a dozen infected emails today, and there are messages rampant on my gesneriads and fern-net groups. From what I have read, this is not a particularly dangerous or damaging virus, it simply keeps going from one person to another.  Here is what it says about it on my virus protection site:   Win32.Badtrans.29020 Alias: W32.Badtrans.B@mm, W32/Badtrans@MM Category: Win32 Type: WormWild: Destructiveness: Pervasiveness: CHARACTERISTICS Win32.Badtrans.29020 is a worm spreading via e-mail. The worm replies to all unread messages and attaches itself using a name constructed from three parts. The first part is one of the following strings: fun Humor docs info Sorry_about_yesterday Me_nude Card SETUP stuff YOU_are_FAT! HAMSTER news_doc New_Napster_Site README images Pics The second part is chosen from the following list: MP3 ZIP DOC The virus adds another extension to the attachment and selects it from two possible types: pif scr When a user opens the attachment, the worm copies itself to the Windows System directory as:  Kernel32.exe and modifies the registry in order to execute it at the next reboot: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\RunOnce\Kernel32 = kernel32.exe Additionally, Win32.Badtrans.29020 worm drops a 5632-byte file KDLL.DLL in the Windows System directory. Similar to other worms that have recently been spreading in the wild (such as Nimda and Aliz), Badtrans.29020 also exploits a known security exploit in Internet Explorer. When a user views an HTML e-mail carrying the worm, Internet Explorer may launch the attached program executing the Badtrans.29020 code. This is due to the "Incorrect MIME Header" vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 and 5.5. For a detailed description of this security hole and links to the appropriate patches, please visit: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.asp? url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-020.asp

    1. Excess Cookies
    2. Dear Union Parish Friends: How many of the LAUnion_L members were infected with the Badtran Virus? Is the worm on the site or did it come in an e-mail? When we purchased our computer we learned a simple trick. This will also help keep you from keeping or getting a virus. Go to start and use your right hand to click explore Do not delete the file itself but: Go to cookies and delete Go to temporary internet files and delete Without these cookies the virus cannot attach itself to your file. I cannot imagine anyone without an online virus protection program. It isn't that expensive and I am able to update every day. This only takes about 5 minutes. Be good to your computer and the people you exchange e-mail with. Get a good online program while continuing to use caution when opening an attachment. Sherry Gresham Gritzbaugh

    1. e-mail virus problems avoided ..so far...
    2. MacFarland
    3. I;ve received three of these messages from genealogical contacts -- I was e-mailed the supposed 'sender' to verify the message was from them. Three replied in the negative and I deleted them from my webmail at the provider's site. The other one was sent from an e-mail address which 'does not exist' according to my server when I tried to verify it with the sender - so that was deleted as well. So far with paranoid caution about opening attachments or accepting anything the least bit suspicious, I've avoided problems. I may have gotten rid of some 'real' messages, but better that than the alternative. One way to run a preliminary check on your e-mail is by checking with your provider to see if a webmail site is available for you. That way you can take a look at the subject lines and senders before opening your computer's e-mail. If you see anything suspicious, you can usually reply and make an inquiry to the sender right from the webmail site -- avoiding completely bringing the message(s) onto your drive. Most webmail sites will not allow you to open attachments (for obvious reasons!). Jan

    3. Sherry, This virus was sent as an attachment. Since the Rootsweb maillists do not allow any attachments, it went through private email. What this virus (or worm) did was to go through undeleted email, replied to the sender of that email, and sent itself. When I caught the virus, it tried to go to a friend of mine who was living in Japan, but has since moved back to Texas and now has a new email address. I got a message from the Japanese server that that email address is no longer in service. My address book has the current email address.
