Are you asking about the Smyrna cemetery near Downsville? If this is the cemetery you want info on, I can ask around and maybe find out something on it. Tonight we have a great new newspaper article from 1873, courtesy of Alice Ogles. It's actually from a Richland Parish Newspaper about a Union Parish gentleman who was erroneously reported to have been murdered - his response is great! Karen http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm

We got one of a lady from the late 1800s from JoAnn Ward McBride for the unidentifieds. She thinks it might be a lady named Anna Nyegaard, who was the 2nd wife of Martin Batte Lee, but hopes someone can confirm or refute that. Then we got one from Shawn Martin of her grandmother's house, which was the general store and Post Office for the community of Laran. Karen
Can anyone tell me if Enoch Tucker Jr buried at Zion Hill Cemetery is the son of Enoch J. Tucker that is also buried there? Thanks Jim Lee
I know this is not genealogy related but this is such a wonderful list of people who have always helped each other that I am asking for help. Please answer me off list if you have references or suggestions. I will be in Union Parish next week and the week after to begin the process of getting my mother's home in Junction City put into her name. I need to know if any of you good folks can recommend an attorney in possibly Farmerville or Ruston who could handle this matter for me. Thanks for your help. Dear Network Solutions, Dan Griggs and Union Parish Researchers: You might find it beneficial to go to http://www.google.com/ Type in your maiden name and married name. You might be surprised to learn that someone has published your personal data on line. If your name is Feazel, Tubberville or Wilhite you might wish to contact: Dan Griggs 283 Columbine Street Suite 116 Denver, CO 80206-4707 303-265-9020 TREELINES-DOM 3929 OVERLAND ROAD PMB 761 BOISE ID 83705 US One of his address is listed as: www.treelines.com/feazel/Outline535.html The last time this happened to me I contacted my Congressman to get the personal data removed. As you know with this information identities can be easily stolen. Should a criminal get this data off the net we could be toast. I intend to hold Network Solutions and Mr. Dan Griggs personally responsible if my name, my spouse's name, my Mom's name, my siblings, nephews, nieces, children and grandchildren are not removed immediately. I suggest you do the same. Yesterday I wrote to Treelines and Mr. Griggs, placed a telephone call which was not returned, and sent a fax. Tonight I contacted Network Solutions. Tomorrow I am writing a letter to our Congress and Senate about this problem. Genealogy is my first love. Above all else I want our history preserved but I AM NOT HISTORY YET. Sincerely yours, Sherry Gritzbaugh Gritzbaugh@AOL.com You will notice The Union Parish and other Genealogy sites do not publish the private information of the living people. Since most of us are not deceased this is an intrusion on our privacy.
I am researching the following families... Slater, Goff, they lived aroung the Louisiana and Arkansas boarder. Thanks, Ramona
Edna Wilson sent us a pic from Union Gin School in about 1935 - 1937 in which about half of the kids are identified. Go take a look and see if you know the others! Karen http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/la/union/photos/uniongin30s.jpg
We just got our 1840 census images up!! The transcription shouldn't be too far behind. And I received our 1820 and 1830 images right before Christmas. I'm mailing them to Linda this week. We're making progress, folks!! Karen
Tim Hudson has sent us more goodies! Two issues of the Union Record, the oldest surviving newspaper from Union Parish, one issue from 1873 and one from 1876. All the articles pertaining to the Ida Schuster Tragedy in one file. And the following obits from the Home Advocate: 1885, H. L. Liggen - 1886, Dr. W. C. Carr, Charles Oliver, Rev. C.W. Hodge, Thomas Jefferson Moore, and Dick Davenport. On the 1920 census - the ladies at GenWeb are in receipt of our transcriptions of Wards 1, 5, 6, and 7. Hopefully they will be up soon after the first of the year. We'll work on Wards 2, 3, 4, 8, and 9 some through the holidays - but mostly after the first of the year. They also have our 1820, 1830, and 1840 transcriptions, which we also hope to see up soon after the first of the year. The 1900 Census is available for transcription again. Debi Burgess had a turn of ill health and is going to be a few months recuperating. Karen Mabry Rice Union Parish Archives Coordinator, USGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/union.htm
Can someone check the 1910 US Census for George F (G Frank Milam) please? He married Theolian McElmore July 29, 1910 by going to El Dorado, Arkansas, but they were living at Marion, Union Parish. Need any information available. Thanks! Jack Milam
Can someone check the 1870 Union Parish Census for me for the family of Elias George age 25 b. AL on page 49? I need his family members. Thanks Pam Holloway
I want to thank everyone - Roy, Hazel, Mary, Kelby, and Tim - for your responses about the African American cemeteries in Union Parish. I've forwarded them to Stephanie Martin-Quiatte who manages the African American Archives for Louisiana. She's putting the data together into a file form, and is going to submit it to Afragenesis (sp?) in hope of finding a volunteer to survey them. Thanks all. Karen
Karen, There are other black cemeteries. At the Meridian Baptist Church near Conway/Truxno there is a black section located across the road from the church. There is a black cemetery (I want to say it's called New Hope) located on the Bernice-Farmerville Highway near Shiloh. There used to be a black school house across the highway from the cemetery. The woods have overtaken it and I don't know if the building still stands.
