"The Irish in America: Long Journey Home" is billed as an epic six-hour television and video event from Academy Award winning film maker Thomas Lennon in association with WGBH Television in Boston. This film chronicles the role the Irish have played in shaping America. It makes its world premiere on PBS over three nights: January 26-28, 1998. The film reportedly spans the 100-year journey from the potato famine to the White House, tracing the fascinating struggles and successes of the millions of immigrants who left their beloved Ireland and arrived on the shores of America. The film includes music from some of today's biggest Irish talents, including Elvis Costello, Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison, The Chieftains with PaddyMoloney (who also serves as the film's executive music producer)and more. Quoting from the press release: "More than two years in the making, the film weaves stories of families, workers, churches, athletes, entertainers, and many more into a compelling portrait of Irish achievement. Its detailed historic tapestry is painted through powerful Irish music and authentic folk rhythms, rare black-and-white photos and film footage, drawings, and interviews with Irish- Americans who provide the film's narrative voices. Spanning six hours, the PBS special (airing 1/26-28) and Deluxe Collector's Video Set (available 1/27) is packed with dramatic stories and images that will have significance for all Americans, including the 40 million of Irish descent, and every American whose ancestors were immigrants to this country." ================================================ Headlines from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter Here are the latest headlines from Dick Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter: - Family Origins Version 6 - 1850 Virginia Census Records on CD-ROM - Massachusetts Historical Images - NGS Releases New Standards - Internet Genealogical Directory - Gene Genealogy - The Irish in America: Long Journey Home - Babynamer - More On "Who Is The Best of the Web" - Home Pages Highlighted To read this week's newsletter, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/home/eastarch.htm ================================================ ======================================================= To unsubscribe from this newsletter send e-mail to: majordomo@list.ancestry.com In the BODY of the message (not the 'Subject' line) type: unsubscribe hometown Please do not include any other text in the message or the process may not work. 2. Hello everyone! Things are getting pretty hectic these days. With the holidays fast aproaching, I find myself drowning in a sea of work. I was wondering if there is anyone with a little extra time that wouldn't mind helping me get the St. John Memorial Gardens index completed to be put online. You don't need to know any fancy HTML coding. All I need is for the names to be inputted on a spreadsheet so they can be transferred to HTML. I can use files from Excel, Microsoft Works, Lotus, etc. If you would be interested in lending a helping hand, please email me. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have almost all of the names written down and I could snail-mail part of the list to you to be transcribed onto disk. Also, if any of you have census records or any other information you think would be useful for St. John Parish Genealogy researchers, please let me know. I would like to have more databases on the site. We have a lot of visitors each month! (P.S. Darlene, I plan on putting the names from the tombstone transcriptions you sent me on a webpage some time next week.) 2. Hi Charles, Thanks for the information. I am in a particulary bad position to answer any questions regarding genealogy right now as my computer has died and will be out of commission for a couple of weeks more. I am forwarding this to a St. John the Baptist Parish mail list to see if maybe someone else may be of help. There is a book by Andrew Booth on Louisiana Confederates that lists the names of those who served & their commands. You can check your local library for a copy or try to get on on interlibrary loan. This information was available for free searches a couple of weeks ago on Ancestry's Library Search at: http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search.asp but I could not access it today without a password.
