Hi, Randy, W. T. Grant Company was a mixture of ' Five and Dime' and junior department store. It was a national chain which went out of business in the 1960s or 70s.I spent many happy hours shopping at department store such as Wellan's, Weiss and Goldring, and Schwartzberg's. There were several nice dress shops - I can't remember the names. The following site has some pictures and history of Alexandria. http://www.alexandria-louisiana.com/ Thanks. Thanks for your reply,Richard. In the 1940s I worked for W. T. Grant which was at the corner of third and Murray. W. T. Grant banked at Rapides Banks which was on the corner of Second and Murray. From the map I have, Third seems to be cut into a couple of pieces. Second appears to have been renamed Main. I would like a map that shows those particular streets as they appeared then. Surely do apppreciate any help. I wouldn't think there have been - other then 10th Street being renamed Martin Luther King (I think that is what the exit sign says off I49 however for me it will always be 10th Street) - street name changes. If you can give an example possibly I can help you locate what you are looking for. Richard J. Heath
I have a recent map of Alexandria but I note there have been changes in a few of the street names from what I remember from the 1930s and 1940s - I think these changes are due to the new bridge - the Murray Street bridge was the main one 'way back then'. Does anyone have a map of downtown Alexandria ca 1940 (give or take 10 years)? Floreda
You didn't indicate what census year you wanted a look up for and under what name.
