    3. I have found that this is about the hardest of the rootswebs to get genealogical information circulating. The Bossier and Caddo groups are new, but up and running. Unfortunately, I have no new information to share with anyone, for I am sitting out in CA. I will, however, make an effort to post material I read on other sources that might be of interest to Rapides researchers. Probably one of the main genealogical problems is the destruction the area suffered from the Civil War era. Beverly Smith

Hi Everyone: This is just to give you a short update on the busy reunion week end... The DYESS Genealogy-type meeting which was held Friday evening, April 28, 2000. It was great. All total we had 34 people who came by and/or stayed and shared information back and forth together. Thanks HOUSTON and GLENITH for coming by and visiting with us. We also had 4 lines of MATHIS people there who connected thru the DYESS family based on the marriage of Edmond D. Dyess and Margaret Mathis. Several of us local cousins represented the Margaret Mathis line. Three of Margaret Mathis' sibling lines were represented. Hirman Mathis Harmom Mathis Pheobe Mathis who married a Wells..... We had FOUR of the SIX Dyess brothers represented. People came from Fla, Ga, Al, Ms, and Texas to the reunion... Next year we will be moving this meeting to a larger place and will have it advertised better .... so... please mark your calanders for the last week end in April for next year............ The DYESS reunion on Saturday, April 29,2000, at the home of Rev. B. G. Dyess was well attended. There were about 125 people there; and, information was shared back and forth. Pictures were taken; and, will be posted on the internet soon. I will advise you all so you can go and view them..... Again, mark your calendars for the last week end in APRIL 2001!!!!!!! Shifting gears... <Smile> The SMITH reunion on April 30,2000....was one of our better attended one. There were over 100 people at this one. Barbara Swire had her new SMITH book (over 200 pages) at the reunion and everyone was very excited and bought all she had put together. She is busy today putting more together to fill orders that were taken. She has text and pictures with the references in the book. We are asking people when you reivew the book, please send Barbara the changes, updates, etc. She will put only a supplement out for next SMITH reunion. The book is $20.00 and well worth it. For anyone who has ever researched the SMITH name..need I say more???<smile> Thanks to ALL who made these two reunions a TOTAL success..... kaite...(Carolyn Dyess Bales)

    3. HOUSTON: Most of these Hayes' (probably all) are from the Effie-Centerpoint and Ruby areas. I have info. on several of them, if you nbeed it, as they are AYMOND descendants from way back in the early 1800's (through, I believe, a George Hayes of Avoyelles - Pointe Maigre area). Gregory R. 1. [LARAPIDE] Hayes
    2. Dear Houston: I was wondering if anyone helped you establish identity of Hayes family members on your list. Since you didn't indicate when they married or a time frame for them, I checked everything I could on my notes and records on the Hayes family(one of my surnames). The first names- Gladys Hayes/Bertrand N. Simmons sounded familiar to me and brought me back to my family group record which included Perrin(Paren) Hayes born 9-3-l834 in Plaquemine Brulee, La and buried in Hayes Protestant Cemetery(died Sept. l876) and his wife, Mary Ann Simmons(daughter of David Simmons and Amelia Foreman) of Sugartown(Beauregard Parish) born ca. l838 and died in l899 in Liberty Hill, Texas. Paren was the son of Thomas Hayes and Mary Ann Foreman of Hayes, Louisiana. It may be Gladys Hayes and Bertrand N. Simmons were cousins as cousins married cousins a lot in the past. My grandmother's brother, Solomon Hayes,I believe was father of Robert Lee Hayes, b. 2-22-l906 - l98l, and according to an old newspaper clipping I found in my grandmother's papers, he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas during World War II. I never found out who Robert Lee Hayes married. Don't know if this Robert Lee Hayes is the one you are looking for info. on. The other Hayes names I can't be sure about. Let me know if I have helped you at all. If you can make it to the genealogy library in Lake Charles, you might want to find out about subscribing to the Hayes Maze. Anna Hayes would be glad to help you and give you the information. It is a great help for those of us trying to sort out which Hayes was which. Bonnie

I have come across it several times in my searches for my family and it seems to be tied into Choctaw Indians somehow... I have been told there was an ADA Settlement somewhere way back when but I cannot seem to find anything out on it.. Any of you have a clue? Busier than usual... hehe Jennifer S. Irwin

    1. [LARAPIDE] Thank you!
    2. Thank you everyone for the address and phone #... I am going to give them a ring later on today. I know my grandmother worked there I just don't know what her job title was. I am sure she worked there sometime between 195? - 198? LOL what a time frame huh? I miss LA. I was down in Colfax every summer or every other ever since I can remember, Since that is where my grandma lived. I can still remember her address.. LOL 606 Mary street. It was walking distance from the Colfax Cemetary. I used to walk past the cemetary to go to the school yard and play but never stopped in it.. Now I wish I had... Since a lot of my ancestors seem to be buried there. I used to play in a pecan tree that stood in the empty lot across from her house and watch my grandmother swinging on the front porch, seeming as happy as can be.. I truely miss her. LOL I can't even seem to find anyone who knows how to make Pickled pears. I miss those too!~!~ Thank you all again for the address and #... Lost in the past and still digging... Jennifer S. IRWIN

    1. [LARAPIDE] BREWSTER - Do You Know These Folks ?
    2. Survey dated February 1824 by Kenneth McKrummen, Surveyor for Rapides Parish. Agreeably to a request of Smith W. BREWSTER, Curator of the Estate of James BREWSTER, dec'd. This survey was made for the purpose of dividing the land belonging to the succession of James BREWSTER, having been obtained by 1st Class Claim # A-970 to the U.S. and land adjacent in the rear by preemption patent purchased from the U.S. to the upper side of the Indian Claim (tribe not identified) containing 765.87 acres and for delivering to _____ (name omitted... for shame) one of the Heirs, her part (ah... a female) who was represented by her husband (not named...pooh). Mentions twice...a one-fourth part. Luckily... on the lower tract of two shown on the survey plat is shown the name of Jeremiah GREENVILLE. Is this the unknown female heir's husband ? How many heirs of James BREWSTER were there ? 4 ? There appears to be more land in this survey, but not yet split up. Curious... Houston
