    1. Re: [LARAPIDE] Rapides Death Index
    2. Perry, thanks for the response. I have relative who lived in LA in the 50s named Perry Buckner; and took a chance on the relationship. I do have some Jacksons in my family in Rapides Parish, but none of your other family names is familiar to me. I have tried the LA vital statistics bureau for death certificates, even when I did not have an exact date (within a ten year period, however) and they actually checked several decades and came back with certificates in 2 of the 3 cases I asked for. Although it seems that your relative may not have died in LA, but rather in DC. Have you tried the US Postal Service? If your relative was appointed to a position rarely given to Blacks, they would probably have something there. Not being in Alexandria, where there are great resources, its difficult to find relevant information, easily. I have made a couple research trips in the last 2 years and been very successful tracing marriage license, draft registrations, census info., etc. But you gotta be there! In the interim, however, you might try your local Family History Center of the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) as they have access to an extensive collection of genealogy on everybody! And you can order that information through them. I have the census book you talked about, by Harry Dill. One caution, there are omissions in this book as I discovered when I got the actually census. So beware. Another resource is found in a series of books entitled, Gone -- But Not Forgotten; Cemetery Inscriptions of Rapides Parish; by Mary Parker Partain and Jane Parker McManus. They give the headstone information contained in several cemeteries throughout Rapides Parish. I have volume 3 and will look up your names. I think there are 6 volumes in all. If I find anything, I will send. Good luck. Barbara

    1. [LARAPIDE] Mayor Robert L. Fox, Sarah A. McKinney
    2. Bill & Lynelle Stevenson
    3. I'm still searching for a death date or burial place for both Robert L. Fox and his wife Sarah A. McKinney Fox. Sarah disappears from the records between the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Robert was on record in 1875, selling property but dead by 1886 when his daughter filed to be appointed andinistrix of his estate in order to pursue a claim filed by him againt the U.S. Government. Robert L. Fox served as mayor of Alexandria, La. in 1874 and I just can't believe that there was no notice or obit in the newspaper, but to this point I haven't been able to locate one. Can anyone help?

    2. Thanks to everyone for responding to my inquiry about Rapides. For a long while I thought there was no one on this site. If there are more of you out there doing research on Rapides WE sure would like to hear from you on whatever you are looking for so we can share more information. Again Thanks, Perry

    1. Re: [LARAPIDE] Rapides Death Index
    2. Barbara, no I am not related to them at all. As a matter of fact I am researching my wifes side of the family at this time. We are looking for Dorse y's, Doziers, Jacksons, Manuals and Ollivers. The most elusive of the bunch is CURTIS CALLAHAN DORSEY. We can track him to the 1900 Census living with Roy Olliver and cUTIS' son (although living with the maternal grandmother Judy or Judith Maunal) CURTIS CALLAHAN DORSEY JR. The Sr. Dorsey is supposed to have left Rapides for Washington, D.C. for one of the higest ranking jobs there with the Postal Service for African Americans. However it is believed he poisoned to get him out of that job. HIs wife Minnie Dorsey (formally a Jackson and Williams) attended the Funeral in D.C. sometime between 1920 and 1929 however we have not been able to find a record of his death. Social Security was not enfporce at that time so thats a dead end. There you have it at least as much as I do. Any suggestion? Perry Los Angeles

    1. [LARAPIDE] Jinks Welch
    2. Thank you to everyone who responded to my request for information on the death certificate. I will send for one tomorrow. I would like to tell about a picture I have with Jinks Welch. It is a picture of a band, guitar players and fiddle players. The picture was taken around 1890, give or take a few years. It was probably taken around Stephenville, TX. The picture includes: Pettis Pipes, holding a guitar; Jenks Welch, holding a fiddle; Wm Madison Welch, holding a guitar; John Welch; Ballard Pipes, holding a fiddle; Drew O. Welch, holding a fiddle; and John Pipes, holding a guitar. I could identify everyone except Jenks Welch. John Welch is my great grandfather Wm. Madison and Drew O. Welch are his brothers. There little sister, Leona, married a William David Pipes. A son of Wm. Madison Welch told us that Jinks Welch was their cousin and that he lived and worked around Cheneyville and Lecompte. He was a builder. He also had a brother living there named "Tel" and I am not sure of the spelling. I have found Jinks H. Welch 18 Oct 1868/25 Jun 1957 and Mary Elizabeth Welch 26 May 1880/4 May 1965 in the Lecompte Cemetery. I do not know if Mary Elizabeth was his wife or maybe his sister. Does anyone know anything about these Welches? Any information will be greatly appreciated. Charlotte from hot West Texas

    2. This URL will get you anywhere you want to go in the U.S. for Vital Records and provide you specifics about costs, required information and some have printable applications from their sites. http://www.vitalrec.com/ In Louisiana... only Death Certificates older than 50 years have been moved from the Department of Health to the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge, La. Good Luck ! Houston

    1. Re: [LARAPIDE] Death Certificate
    2. This seems like a relativly recent dat (50's) so you should be able to write to the Vital Records Dept. or Human Resources Dept. which are really the same depending of their choice of title. You should be able to obtain the correct address through the internet for that state.

    1. [LARAPIDE] Rapides Death Index
    2. Can anyone tell me if a book exists on the Death Index of Rapides between 1870 and 1940 or the present of African Americans and/or if there is a Mortality Listing any where between that period ? I would very much appreciate a response with a title, publisher, author and period covered if known. I will accept a good recommendation as well. Thank you, Perry Los Angeles

    2. I finally found my Jinks Welch in the Lecompte Cemetery and I need to get the death certificate. He died in 1957. Do I request the death certificate at the Archives and do you know how much it is? Thanks so very much. Charlotte in hot West Texas

    3. At 07:17 PM 8/2/00 -0400, you wrote: >Can anyone tell me if a book exists on the Death Index of Rapides between >1870 and 1940 or the present of African Americans and/or if there is a >Mortality Listing any where between that period ? The Rapides Parish Library, Reference Dept. 411 Washington Ave., Alexandria Louisiana 71301-8338 has the Alexandria Daily Town Talk on microfilm. They only have one reader, so you can use it for only 30 minutes if someone else if waiting. A few weeks ago, I was there on a Saturday with quite a list, one of the ladies told me that if I wanted to leave them the list, they would look the obituaries up and mail me copies for 10 cents a copy, no charge for their service. I received 8 copies and my list back with the ones marked with the ones they could not find. They sent me a note, I owed them 80 cents, it didn't mention the price of the envelope or the 77 cents for postage. It was well worth my small contribution to cover these expenses. You will, of course, need to give them the name and date of death. My hats off to the people who work at this library. Hazel
