    2. Thanks so much. I was afraid that would be the answer. Unfortunately, some of the volunteers at our local (small) center are not as knowledgeable as some others. You just never know who will be on duty. However, I am so grateful to be able to use the facilities I cetainly should not complain. 1. [LARAPIDE] Does this belong to anyone in the Rapides Area?
    2. Hi, I was checking my newsletter from MISSING LINKS, Vol. 5, No. 34 and ran across this interesting item. Would this possibly belong to any WRIGHT decendents in the Rapides area? Please contact this person if you think it is one of your people. Jeanne * * * * * * * * * * More than 20 years ago, I purchased in Marshall, Texas, an old Singer sewing machine base that had a heavy, granite top on it. I took it with me when I moved 17 miles north to Jefferson, Texas. A few years ago, however, I wanted to use the base for something else and had my husband remove the top. It was a tombstone with a name and dates. I tried to locate the cemetery from which it came by going through Texas death records, looking in nearby Louisiana, and advertising in a genealogy column in the DALLAS (Texas) MORNING NEWS and the SHREVEPORT TIMES, all with no success. I will be happy to make arrangements to give it to the family to whom it belongs. The stone says: E. N. WRIGHT Aug. 11, 1849 - Jan. 27, 1923. [email protected]

    1. [LARAPIDE] One STAFFORD Family Documented
    2. Hello List, I know that there are many of you out there that have ties to some of the STAFFORD's of Rapides Parish. This is just one of those families. Taken during the 2nd big oil boom in Rapides Parish, to assure the representative of the company and/or speculator, that he had a 100% interest in this particular Oil, Gas, and Mineral Lease. Rapides Parish, La. Clerk of Court's Office, Conveyance Book 238, p. 268, Original Instrument filed as # 242916, dated 10 Jun 1939 and filed for record 29 Jun 1939. Affidavit as to Heirship given under oath by W.S. BARKER and Smith SNOWDEN, state that they have lived in Rapides Parish, La. over 35 years and are well acquainted with A.M. STAFFORD and his wife, Mrs. Archie M. STAFFORD (formerly Werdna JACKSON), Mr. Stafford now being deceased and that between this union were born 17 children, and only 17 children, and that 10 of those children died in infancy or before attaining age 10. The following children are the only surviving children of this union: Clara STAFFORD, married to K. COOLEY (What's his name ?). Hickman STAFFORD, a single man. Ulysee (sic) STAFFORD, a single man. Archie M. STAFFORD Jr., married to Hallie SLAUGHTER. Dave STAFFORD, married to Occie (sic) OLIVE. Willie STAFFORD, married to Leon LEMOINE. Susie STAFFORD, married to J.H. JONES (What's his name). Witnessed by G.P. DAVIS and T.L. WALLACE, before Wade H. JONES, Notary Public. It should also be noted, that even though this is from a fairly recent time period, such affidavits may be on record for persons who died many decades previous to this type of record being done and/or finally being recorded. One should always check the names of their research interest in the indices of the land and civil court offices to avoid overlooking such a find. Enjoy ! Houston

Living there (or near there) from birth until graduation, I knew the Staffords, Jacksons and Jones in Lecompte, but I can not recall their first names. I still have family living in Lecompte, who could tell me about these families, but unforturnely they are not online, and I don't get up there near as often as I would like. Mr. G. P. Davis (I don't recall his first name) and T. L. (Thelma) Wallace were employees of the Bank of Lecompte. Wade H. Jones, the notary was the bank president. I am not sure if this was Wade Sr., or Wade Jr., who was called "Dooney" (that maybe misspelled). Wade the third is continuing the family tradition, and is the banker there now, and may be able to help you. I hope this is of some help. Hazel Payne Miley LeBlanc

    1. [LARAPIDE] Four Questions Concerning Pasty Coker and Jennie Coker of Rapides Parish, Louisiana
    2. From: www.randywillis.org Four Questions Concerning Pasty Coker and Jennie Coker of Rapides Parish, Louisiana Dr. Greene W. Strother wrote to me in a letter about his grandmother "Pasty" Coker that she married Alexander Strother. Greene Strother was a descendant from two different lines/children of Rev. Joseph Willis. Greene Strother's father was John Houston Strother, Sr. (1852-1926) who was the son of Alexander Strother that was killed in the Civil War on May 11, 1864. Greene Strother's mother was Caroline Willis Strother (1855-1931). She was a daughter of Lemuel Willis and Emeline Perkins and a granddaughter of Rev. Joseph Willis. Greene Strother's sister Nellie V. Strother wrote me in a letter (1983) about her mother "about Carolyn [sic] Matilda Willis Strother - a granddaughter of Joseph Willis. During the Civil War her grandfather Perkins came for her mother [Patsy] and children to live on the plantation. Following her mother's [Pasty] death the children lived there - each had a black nurse. She [Carolyn Willis] was several years younger than the others: Polk, Olive, Sryldia and Liddy. She was given the choice of where to live and she chose Polk and his wife Anna. The estate was settled and she and John [Strother], after marriage, settled on her acreage...she was known as pet, mother, mamma, ma, mom." John Houston Strother, Sr.'s mother and Greene Strother's grandmother was "Patsy" Coker according to Greene Strother and Nellie Strother. Rev. Joseph Willis' son Joseph Willis, Jr. married Jennie Coker at Bayou Chicot and later moved to Rapides Parish and settled near Tenmile Creek. Other Observations Two female Jeanie/Janie/Jane? & Pasty Cokers 1) Jennie Coker married Joseph Willis, Jr. on 5 FEB 1814. There household members listed in the 1850 Rapides Parish Census are: Joseph Willis 58 Jane 40 Sarah 27 Charles 17 Lemuel 14 Elizabeth 11 2) Pasty Coker (granddaughter of Rev. Joseph Willis) married Alexander Strother. There household members listed in the 1850 Rapides Parish Census are: Alexander Strother 21 Patsy 21 Sarah 2 William 1 Alexander Strother is buried at Ashworth/Osborne Cemetery b. 20 DEC 1829 d. 11 MAY 1864 in Civil War. Alexander Strother was the father of John Strother who was the father of Dr. Greene Strother. The Four Questions: 1) Who was Alexander Strother's father? 2) Who is the Martha Strother that is buried at the Ashworth/Osborne Cemetery (b. 12 MARCH 1830 d. 10 SEPT 1899)? 3) Is Pasty Coker the daughter of Jennie Coker that married Joseph Willis, Jr. on 5 FEB 1814 and if so why wasn't she known as Patsy Willis instead of Pasty Coker? 4) How can Jane/Jennie/Janie Coker that married Joseph Willis, Jr. on 5 FEB 1814 be age forty in 1850? This Jane must be a daughter or the age is wrong in the census? I would appreciate your comments on the above observations! Randy Willis www.randywillis.org
