Here is another fine example of why a genealogist should look at records well beyond the time period of a person's life for some more answers... This woman, according to her grave marker, died in 1905. Her Estate Succession was not Probated until 1951. Rapides Parish, La., Conveyance Book 407, Page 445, Probate #7240, Estate of Emma (Emy) Johnson Cloud, dated, filed and recorded 2 March 1951. I got a call today from John Sauer in Houston. He's searching for information on Timothy DEVORE (DEVOUR). He was listed in the 1820 census in Rapides Parish, but by the early 1830s he was in Texas. By the 1840s, Mr Sauer believes he was back in Louisiana since there is a Congressional record of a pension record back in Rapides Parish. The DEVORE family was also found in Louisiana in 1802. Mr Sauer said other towns are mentioned in his research including Bogola and Falls River. He is trying to determine where he should look for congressional records and other records since the courthouse was burned during 1864. He's going to be in Louisiana this weekend for a wedding. Would a trip to the Archives in Baton Rouge be of any help? Please help me tell advise him where else he may find records of that sort in the state. John Willis was born circa 1759, in Robeson County, North Carolina, and died in April, 1802. He was the son of Daniel Willis and Elizabeth (Betsy) Moore. John Willis married, Asenath Barnes, in 1779 (she was born in 1763, NC; died 1806, Natchez, Ms). John Willis, helped emancipate, his first-cousin and my ancestor, Rev. Joseph Willis (see http://www.randywillis.org/) of Rapides Parish, Louisiana. John Willis became a member of the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1782, 1787, 1789 and 1791, a member of the Senate in 1794, and of the House of Representatives in 1795. In the same year that he helped obtain Joseph Willis' "legal freedom," 1787, he was appointed as one of a committee of five, from North Carolina, to ratify the Constitution of the United States. This was done just in time for North Carolina to enter the Union, as the twelfth state, and to assist in the election of Gen. George Washington as the first President. In 1795, Governor Samuel Ashe commissioned John Willis as a Brigadier General in the 4th Brigade of the Militia, Continental Army. The land that the county seat of Robeson County, Lumberton, North Carolina is located on was donated by him, from his Red Bluff Plantation. The area, in recent years, has become infamous as the location for the trial of the men responsible for the death of the father of basketball star Michael Jordon. A plaque of General John Willis stands there today. Gen. John Willis moved to Natchez, Mississippi, from North Carolina, in about 1800 and died soon thereafter, in 1802. He is buried behind the Natchez Cathedral. He also had a son named John (see children below). Another son, Thomas Willis, was almost Attorney General of Louisiana, he was a circuit judge in Mississippi and died in Copiah County, Ms. Children of Gen. John Willis: 1. Alice Willis 2. Vinita, I believe we have contacted one another in the past. Due to some computer problems I had lost all information that I had. I believe you were the one that told me that Arch's father was Stephen Patrick or maybe I had found your message on a message board at one time. I have notes from Olivia A. Bernson (McCauley Researcher) who interviewed Aunt Florence McCauley Bittick before she passed away. Some of which confirmed stories I had been told of Grandpa Arch's death although there is some conflicting information in the my research. Annie McCauley, born 10 July 1874 in ,San Augustine, TX; died 08 August 1952 in San Augustine, TX. She married Archie Lynch Abt. 1894 in San Augustine, TX. Notes for Annie McCauley: 1992: Florence Bittick writes,"Aunt Annie had 8 children. Her husband, Arch Lynch, was killed before the baby was named. Aunt Annie's sister's husband killed him. (Nov. 28, 1900) He was 27 years old. The baby was named after his daddy."..."Henson Coulter and his son shot and killed Arch Lynch." 1900 Census San Aug TX ED 75 S 8B #136 Shows her as 25 yrs old and married for 5 years. She had had 5 children 4 were living. She gave her father's birthplace as TN. Notes for Archie Lynch: 1992 Florence Bittick said that Arch Lynch owned a sawmill and that several of the neighbors had argued with him over a gate. They hid out behind the buildings and when Arch came out of the office door, they shot him dead. They later determined that Raymond Coulter's gun killed him and Raymond went to the penitentary. 1900 Census San Aug TX ED 75 S 8B #136 Shows him as 24 his birthplace was Louisiana and Father born in MS and Mother born in TX. Mary Elizabeth McCauley, born 07 May 1864 in ,San Augustine, TX; died 15 July 1935 in ,San Augustine, TX. She married Henson Coulter 22 December 1886 in ,San Augustine, TX. Notes for Mary Elizabeth McCauley: 1992: Florence Bittick writes: Aunt Mary married Henson Coulter. He and his son shot and killed Arch Lynch, Aunt Annie's husband. The Coulters had 3 girls and 3 boys. Three of them died young." Florence also said: They proved that Raymond Coulter's gun was the one that killed Arch. He went to the pen." Annie and Mary were children of Thomas McCauley and Martha Williams. The baby that Aunt Florence speaks of was my Uncle Arch Lynch b. May 01, 1910. The information I got from Arch Lynch's tombstone says that he died May 25, 1911 which leads me to believe that this information on the tombstone for either Uncle Arch or Grandpa Arch is inaccurate. Or maybe the funeral home records in Uncle Arch's case. I have found no funeral home records for Grandpa Arch. Aunt Florence was always the one to go to for any information on the family. I do however remember stories of Uncle Arch not ever seeing his father from other family members. I believe either Uncle Arch was actually born in 1911 or Grandpa Arch died in 1910. (I know of several other instances where either tombstone information, funeral home records or both have been incorrect). Archie Lynch and Annie McCauley had several children. Thier daughter, Emmer Ethel Lynch Leach (b. December 28, 1896 d. October 11, 1991) was my great grandmother. Emmer's birthdate comes from the SS death index. My Grandma (Emmer's daughter inlaw) told me that they had to go to the family bible to prove Emmer's date of birth to start her social security. I wish I knew where that family bible was/is now. Other conflicting research: 1900 Census San Aug TX ED 75 S 8B #136 Shows him as 24 his birthplace was Louisiana and Father born in MS and Mother born in TX. I was told that his father was Stephen Patrick Lynch born 1839 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana Thank you for your reply, Shelia Burk Louisiana In a message dated 01/03/2001 9:52:33 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Dear Cousin Shelia-I am a descendant of Stephen Patrick Lynch and would like to swap info with you. Need information on Aimuewell Willis (b. May 1, 1837; d. Sept. 8, 1937) Contact: Randy Willis www.randywillis.org [email protected] Aimuewell Willis was Rev. Joseph Willis' youngest son. He was born at the old Joe Willis Crossing on the Calcasieu River in Rapides Parish, Louisiana on May 1, 1837. Aimuewell Willis, married twice and settled, in 1925, five miles southeast of Leesville. His first wife was Marguerite Leuemche, and his second wife was Lucy Ann Foshee (b. Jan. 28, 1868; d. Jun 17, 1960). He was a Civil War Veteran (Company D Cres. LA Inf. CSA). He was also known as "Uncle Ame" by his friends. His obituary listed the following surviving children: Luther J. Willis [b. Jul. 19, 1908; d. Apr. 24, 1958], J. E. Willis, Elbert Willis, Earl Willis, Elzie Willis [b. Nov. 20, 1900; d. Nov. 21, 1991], Everett L. Willis [b. Oct. 14, 1875; d. Nov. 14, 1958], Mrs. George [Effie Willis] Titus, and Pearl Willis Haymon. At the time of his death he had 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He died, at age 100, on September 8, 1937 and is buried at the Castor Cemetery in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. Rev. John Houston Strother, Jr. interviewed Aimuewell Willis in 1933. The interview was later published in The Baptist Message, on July 8, 1937. I quote: "Then I asked him of his father. He sat up, his voice became mellow, and his expression cheerful. (No memory seemed so rich to him, even when coming back over those 75 years). (With pleasure he told of carrying the wasted form in his arms from bed to chair and back again)." Rev. Strother also stated, that as of 1937, nine descendants of Rev. Joseph Willis had become preachers. I visited with Aimuewell's daughter, Pearl Willis Haymon, of Denver, Colorado in December of 1980, and a short time later with Aimuewell's son Elzie Willis, near Leesville, Louisiana. It was a strange feeling talking with someone whose grandfather was born in the 1750's. Joseph was about 79 when their father was born and, Aimuewell was in his eighties when they were born.
Are you blessed this first year of the new millennium? Ever wonder why the millennium really starts on Jan 1, 2001 instead of the year 2000? It's because the Romans made the first calendar and there is no zero character in Roman numerals. They started the first Christian year at year I, not day 1. Please consider the "what if" situation below and think about your own life. WHAT IF: If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following. There would be: 57 Asians 21 Europeans 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south 8 Africans 52 would be female 48 would be male 70 would be non-white 30 would be white 70 would be non-Christian 30 would be Christian 89 would be heterosexual 11 would be homosexual 6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States. 80 would live in substandard housing 70 would be unable to read 50 would suffer from malnutrition 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth 1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education 1 would own a computer When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for both acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent. The following is also something to ponder... If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ... you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death...you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep...you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace...you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. If your parents are still alive and still married...you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada. If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful...you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not. If you can hold someone's hand, hug them, or even touch them on the shoulder...you are blessed because you can offer healing touch. If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all. THINK ABOUT IT! Have a wonderful New Year!!! Randy Willis www.randywillis.org www.riatatalent.com www.darrellroyal.org www.advancedblinds.com www.ropersnightclub.com
Need to know the maiden name of the first wife of William Bunyan Nash, of Lake Charles, LA: former principal of Central School and Postmaster from 1950-1960. Bunyan is the son of John James Nash 1850-1931 and Isabelle Phillips 1853-1928 who are buried in Butter Cemetery, near Forest Hill, LA in Ward 4. My recollection is that her given name was Marvel. I met her in about 1919-1920. I do not have the maiden name of Bunyan's second wife, whose given name was Edna (from newspaper accounts of Bunyan's death). Many thanks for your help. Stanton H. Nash
