On April 1, 1861, William T. Crenshaw of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, purchased land in neighboring Grant Parish on the north. The land included the SENE 10-6-2, the NESE of 10-6-2 and the NWSW 11-6-2. Does anyone know anything about this William T. Crenshaw. Does anyone have access to an 1860 census of either Rapides or Grant parishes and can check if he shows up. Thanks in advance for any assistance, Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com
Check out this website: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fsaPlaces14.html It appears to me that some of the pictures that are suppose to be Alexandria are in fact Pineville. The view of the old bridge appears to me to be from the Alexandria side. Also a picture of "Alexandria Main Street" looks like it is opposite Mt. Olivet Cemetery. If any of you can identify any of these, please let us know. In one I definitelly spot the railroad overpass in Pineville. Floreda
A good illustration of how much incorrect (along with the correct) information that can be found in Census can be found in these two entries from the 1900 Rapides Parish Census Soundex. This is the entry for Ward 9, Pineville for Edward Nugent. Vol 34 ed 137 sheet 13 line 95 He is white, born January 1872 age 28 born Louisiana. His household consists of Pinkie (wife) born December 1874 age 25 Louisiana Houston (son) born January 1894 age 6 Louisiana Louella (daughter) born February 1896 age 4 Louisiana Joshua (son) born October 1899 age 8/12 Louisiana This entry for Ward 10 Rigolette for Ed Nugent vol 34 ed 136 sheet 13 line 80 He is white, born February 1874 age 26 Louisiana. His household consts of Pink (wife) born (can't read the month but it looks like un) 1879 age 21 Louisiana Huston (son) born Auust 1895 age 4 Louisiana Louella (daughter) November 1897 age 2 Louisiana Joushwaya (son) October 1899 age 7/12 Louisiana I have ancestors and collatoral lines in Rapides. I have found from information known to me, that the census taker for Pineville entered information that is often far afield. The census taker for West Alexandria and for Alexandria entered (for the most part) information known to me. I visited the graves of Ed and Pinkie - they are buried in the cemetery next to the Baptist Church in Holloway (can't remember the name).. Her stone reads Pinkie Nugent wife of Ed Nugent born 12/3/1877 died 2/2/1974 His stone reads Ed Nugent born 2/5/1872 died 9/23/1974. Floreda
If you are interested, http://www.microzoo.com/lanews.html has a list of links to Louisiana Newspapers listed by thier respective cities. Several have a searchable archive which I have found useful to find older obituary listings. Hope this helps. www.KEZP.com is an interesting website for those Rapides Parish researchers.. I called information to find the phone number for the Alexandria Daily Town Talk and was given 1-318-448-8463. Floreda, KEZP is a local radio station. It is not affiliated with the Town Talk. > www.KEZP.com is an interesting website for those Rapides > Parish researchers.. > > I called information to find the phone number for the Alexandria Daily > Town Talk and was given 1-318-448-8463. > > It was from this number (which sounds more like a radio station than a > newpaper -perhaps it is the Town Talks radio station) I found the website. Hi Houston, Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Jeanne
Hello Jeane, Try e-mailing [email protected] Helen is one of the part-time librarians at the Alexandria Historical and Genealogical Library. They have a list of Mayors of Alexandria in their vertical file, filed under Alexandria. Try e-mailing the Secretary of State, Fox McKeithen or the Louisiana State Archives or even the State Library for a list or lookup of Louisiana Governors. They have websites with e-mail links for contacts. Good Luck ! Houston P.S. I am on the road, so I can't do this lookup for you.

Peggy, thanks for the note on the meeting. I would have loved to come but I live near Houston and won't be able to make it. I would assume you are related to Hypolite Beaubouef out of Avoyelles Parish. My great-great-great grandmother was one of his daughters, Elizabeth Beaubouef. Her husband was William Peter Smith. I do have a copy of the Beaubouef book that was published in 1970. Have you done any work on the Beaubouefs?
Can anyone tell me the date when there was either a mayor of Alexandria or a governor of Rapides Parish in the late 1800's (abt.1890's) or early 1900's. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks Jeanne

List-managers. If you get a bounce back please do not remove me. All e-mail will get to me eventualy. Thanks for your help. Martha W. Barker [email protected]
?The Winn Genealogical & Historical Association invites you to join them for a special day this Saturday, March 10th. Beginning at 10:30 a.m. the group will meet at the Clerk of Court's office for a special time of research graciously permitted by Clerk of Court Donald Kelley. Beginners are encouraged to come take advantage of this opportunity for "hands-on" help from the other members. The group will break for lunch at noon, and will meet again at 1 p.m. in the society meeting rooms on the second floor of the Winn Parish Health Unit on West Main Street in Winnfield for a business meeting and program. Guest speaker for the program beginning at 2 p.m. will be Thomas Ayers of Jonesboro, award-winning writer and veteran investigative reporter. Mr. Ayers has written numerous feature and historical articles for the Dallas Times Herald, the Dallas Morning News and the Civil War Times quarterly, "Columbiad". He has won awards from the Associated Press and United Press International among others, and is the author of "That's Not In My American History Book: A Compilation of Little Known Events and Forgotten Heroes", and "Dark and Bloody Ground: The Battle of Mansfield and the Forgotten Civil War in Louisiana". Just released by Taylor Publishing in February, "Dark and Bloody Ground" chronicles one of the strangest and most ignoble defeats suffered by Union forces, the ill-fated Red River Campaign and the Battle of Mansfield. This latest book will be the topic of Mr. Ayers ' presentation this Saturday. Come join us for a great day!! Peggy Beaubouef Vice President, WPGHA

Hello List Members, I have a 1000 German Mark bill printed during the 1st Reich. It (and probably others like it) were apparently taken as a souvenir by members of the 194th Glider Infantry. These were the guys who were towed by other aircraft into combat zones in a motorless glider plane who's lives were solely at the inaccuracy of enemy troop's groundfire. A steerman had to direct the glider into a open area, once their cable was released from the other airplane, large enough to set the glider (which was disposable) down. Then the remaining living soldiers had to flee for the nearest natural cover (trees, ditch, hill, etc.), determine their situation, then fight their way out of a nasty and almost always nearly suicidal situation. This monetary bill is worthless as currency, since it was printed before World War I, but it bears 19 signatures of some of brave men in the 194th Glider Infantry, some that were from Central Louisiana. Does anyone know who these men were/are ? Can you tell us a little about the one(s) you recognize ? I also have a photo of such a squad, I just do not know for certain they are the same men who signed this note. These came from a small wooden box found in my step-granfather's dresser. He was John David "Dave" BURGIN of the Forest Hill/Glenmora, La. area. He married my maternal grandmother, when he was 51, and it is thought that he never sired any children. The signatures as best I can make them out are: Wilmer COLEMAN Wilford E. SHANK or SHAUK Charles Wm. GILES Andy MAYOCK John FERGUSON W. L. JONES Jan OLEXA or ALEXA Tony DeCARLO Robert A. GODY Mike KOVIAK Walter B. BOHNHOFF William B. BOHNHOFF James BOCK Monroe ADAMS Herbert STRAUGHN (he shows he is from Colfax, La.) Ralph ROGERS William N. PETERS Robert L. MEYERS Raymond J.
