Downgrading to the USA version is what I have done, also, for the same reasons. I have still been able to go across the ocean to Germany thanks to Rootsweb connections. I can't imagine not having Ancestry. And it is also a great way to safely store your research - what would happen if you lost your hard drive.......or a fire where even all your auxiliary hard-drives burned up? I too have belonged to Ancestry.com for a number of years and, to me, it is well worth it in the long run.  I keep my various family trees on it and have piece of mind that it will always be there when I need it, including documents, pictures, etc.   But I have a questions: What happens if you are no longer a member.  If you can no longer afford membership, or you are incapable of using a computer (sick, coma, insane, whatever), or worse yet, you die suddenly? Remember, you can always subscribe to the World membership on a monthly basis.  For instance, save your "world" research to do at the same time.  Subscribe for a month, do your research, then unsubscribe.  It's a good choice if you don't search other countries often. I do this when I need Canadian and Australian records especially.  I haven't had much success with records of Europe. Not long ago, I got a message from some man who lives in Berlin who is a professional researcher. He had noticed my posting which inquired about the birth parents of Hermann Edward Lehmann and suggested I try a Protestant site since most Germans were Protestant in Berlin around 1805. I sent a message to them and they replied that they found nothing on the birth of my Lehmann, but they suggested that I try St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Berlin. I did that and sent a query, but they said they charged 35 Euro to do a search. I thought it wise to check other sources first before putting out that much money and not knowing if they would find anything of value. I was wondering if anyone else has been approached by a professional genealogist who lives in Berlin.....or can suggest another source? A cousin who has been on Ancestry.com for several years did not find anything on his birth record or parents.
