    3. Hi, All, I also bought a new computer this year which has Windows 7 and had to buy the newest version of FTM 12, for compatibility. My old computer had Windows XP using FTM 11. I agree with Helen, I don't like FTM 12 as much as the older versions. I have been using FTM since the very early versions and have been updating as they came along. I know my eyes are getting older, but the format is quite different and the print is smaller and just not as user friendly as the older versions. There are bits of information in sourcing that I still cannot find that I had on my older version. I back up with Carbonite. We had our computer guru install FTM 12 for us, transferring the data from the old computer to the new computer, but I am not aware of my information being sent to Ancestry, although it wouldn't surprise me. I know that Ancestry encourages you to use their online tree which you can privatize and not make public, but I don't feel comfortable with that set up. BTW, what does everyone do with their old FTM CD's? Ancestry told me that they could still be used on older computers. (older operating systems). Thanks! My son helped me download it onto a thumb drive and was able to transfer the material on that to the new computer. You will notice a difference though in the setup. I think I noticed that Windows 8 will be out soon...if not already. 3. I too use and love LEGACY Family Tree for more than 7 years now. It is very powerful in customization, if you care to seek out those features, but very user friendly in appearance and performance if you like plain vanilla. There are just about any types of predesigned report outputs you would want, but with a little finessing, you can customize those as well. The regular version download is free, the deluxe version costs about $30.00 to upgrade. But I've never had to pay for any program version revisions beyond upgrading to deluxe. When you sign on, it asks if you want to check for updates (which you can switch off) because you haven't in the last 30 days. If there are any, you can download, if not, it tells you no new updates and you go into the last file you were working on (unless you changed that setting to something else). You can do research from within the program to on line databases ... most popular are there on their suggested lists, but you can add your own ... like our wonderful NOVA site. The have a program called Source Writer, which helps you set up you master sources and the source details for the particular individual you're working with. Some of the information you cut and past into the templates and some populates itself. To my knowledge it does not upload your information to any database site, but I think there are some provision for linking to the LDS church if that is the purpose of your research. It's not, in my case, so I've turned off the LDS items. But I'm still mad at the Vatican for denying record digitizing any more by the Mormons, but that's another whole issue! My experience with Millennia company has been totally satisfactory. Even when I have called with what I learned from their answers was a right in front of my nose, they was helpful and courteous ... very much like a family biz. But they must be a big outfit. They sponsor an annual genealogy cruise to someplace intriguing on one of the better class cruise lines and when they do a webcast [at least so far] it is free for the live broadcast [if you are one of the first 1000 to sign on] and on replay for a period of time after. If you choose to purchase the DVD later, it costs about $10. They have a store and will send you offers, but hey that's the commerce of the future. And they do send a monthly newsletter with tips and tricks and other marketing info. Is it perfect? What is? But it's better than just good. If you are populating from another program with GEDCOM (or whatever your old program calls what probably is GEDCOM), your records will require a bit of tidying up, especially the text notations. But I don't think any program can handle free form text transfer without some clean up. Not a major issue. And maybe there is a way to "auto-fix" that I haven't discovered yet ... because it is powerful. Well enough of my cheerleading, and no I don't work for Millennia or have any business interest in the company. I only hope they remain an independent entity which is in my opinion already almost a good as it can get (ok I'd like the cruise to be free too, but at least there's no addition tuition for the courses they give). Oh, I also have Ancestry.com and have a couple of public trees there. I don't consider the "cloud" that safe not so much because of theft of information, after all most of my data comes from public sources or my possessions and I am more than willing to share but because serving up options to cut and paste easily produces catch-22 self-sourcing by lazy or newbie family historians of a lot of dubious information which then gets repeated a la the Sorcerer's Apprentice. I like my sourcing as correct as I can make it or I won't say it's really a source, just a note to be researched further, on my LEGACY file. And I'm afraid someday that "cloud" may wind up over China or India, and I'm too old to learn a new language for the instruction manual. I back up daily with ClickIt on my own storage device. Time for dinner. Hope this helps anyone who might choose to try LEGACY.
