Hi Kathy, You only have to have that happen once and you learn from your mistakes. But, WOW what a price you pay! Years and years of hard work. That has happened to me but in a different way. We had a flood that destroyed everything in our house (this was before I had much on the computer.) I literally gave up on my genealogy for 10 years because I was so devastated and I just didn't have all that information in my head! And, I DO want to share my tree because I love to help and share information with everyone. But, my cousin is very old fashioned and she is helping me with the tree. She does not like to share with anyone other than family. I respect her wishes and keep it private. So, I go and look for all those cousins like you were mentioning. THAT IS THE VERY BEST THING ABOUT ANCESTRY!. I have now reached 110 cousins found via Ancestry and Facebook. I just created a new Family Group page where I invited all of them to have a family reunion via computer until we can make the real thing happen. It is a place that we can reacquaint ourselves with the ones we know and get to know the ones we don't know. And, it is a place that we can share stories and old photos of our ancestors and our immediate family. It has been very successful and now 110 people will have their family a little closer than they would have been and we all benefit! This has been very rewarding and is probably the best thing that has come out of my hobby! I wanted to share my story since you mentioned it, Kathy. Maybe some of you might want to do the same thing. It doesn't have to be large because mine just started out with the first cousins and kept growing as I found more. Now we have 4 generations! Age 1 year to 82 years old! Enough sharing of my story but I really wanted to share it with this group! Thank you for listening all. Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion. It is something I continue to wrestle with. Sheila, you have made a case that appeals to me very much. I have a personal subscription to Ancestry, and I really appreciate being able to search Ancestry through my personal FTM tree. (I have the 2006 edition, which I believe was the first year this option was available.) I'm still dithering over whether to upgrade my version of FTM. I haven't dismissed the option of buying a used copy of an older edition - 2009-2011. When the 2012 edition was being reviewed, I remember people saying that the newer program used a lot more memory. Can anyone comment on that(with regard to 2012, or any program newer than 2006)? I never have the latest system at home - the 2 computers I have now are "hand-me-ups" from my daughter. So I tend to worry about overtaxing them. I would hate to have my FTW files "upgraded" by the newer edition unless I feel sure that I will be able to make it work for me. Unless they have changed, once the files upgrade, the older program can't open them. A second question is this right of Ancestry to appropriate our information. Sheila, maybe you can answer this. If your online information is restricted to people you approve, is Ancestry able to make use of it? Hosting lots of personal trees, and using this is a selling point for their service is ONE thing. I would consider that a fair trade. BUT if they are actually data-mining the info and repackaging it, that would be quite different. Thirdly, does a person have to have an Ancestry subscription to see your info? I have a number of cousins (people I actually grew up with, as opposed to the wonderful "research cousins" I have discovered online) who have an interest in our family history. But only a few of them do any actual research on their own. I would love to find a place to host the two sides of my tree, so I can easily share my discoveries with these cousins. They are unlikely to save my irregular emails on the subject; but if I could just give them a link to follow, I think some of them would be more likely to explore the tree, and share it with other relatives. I think of it as a conversation starter. Whenever I send out a new memo, I always hear back about stories or comments they can recall from the Dear Departed generations. Or someone will say, "I have a copy of that marriage certificate," or "My mother left me some photos of him," etc. Any & all feedback or advice would be most welcome. Kathleen, I also usually use a computer until everyone is saying "Good grief is that old thing still working" and I found that each new upgrade was a bigger and bigger RAM hog. I especially noticed the problem with my old computer that only had 4g of RAM. Running 2011, it seem to shut down a couple of times a week and I would have to 'compact' to get rid of errors. My husband bought me a new Gateway i5 with 1TB hard drive and 8g of RAM and now it runs like a flash of lightning. My old computer was almost 8 yrs old and time to be retired, or at least reformatted and not run as many RAM hog programs, like FTM and Windows 7. Just my experiences. I tend to be running a lot of programs all at once, Ancestry.com, FTM 2011, excel, word, Quickbooks Pro 2012, PhotoShop, plus my tax program that I am in and out of all the time. Several times I have had to "Compact" my FTM to correct errors. Probably I wouldn't have these errors if I were only running one program at a time, but that isn't going to happen! (I remember when I bought a new "HOT" PC about 1990 (I think) and it had a whopping 4 MB of ram! I thought it was fabulous! And, That, they say, is progress! Kathleen, Try this website. I have a friend that uses it and she says it's great and free! http://tribalpages.com/ Also I think in Rootsweb you can upload a tree also. I use FTM 2012. I do choose to upload to Ancestry only because I look at it as though Ancestry is my backup of all data in my family tree. If my computer crashed and I had no backup on a remote device I would lose it. Therefore, Ancestry is my external storage device. You can set Ancestry so that ALL of your tree is "PRIVATE". This is how I have mine set up. No one can see your data or tree unless you give them permission. The other nice thing is that the FTM 2012 program keeps the two databases in sync. If you make a change on FTM then it will be copied to Ancestry. And vice versa, if you make a change on Ancestry you will get the same change on FTM. But, this is a feature that you have control over. If you don't want them to stay synched then just turn the feature off. I personally like to do different things in each one just for ease of how certain processes work. For instance, I like to do my searches through Ancestry just because I find it easier. But, Ancestry does not have all of the features that FTM has such as People Merge and Find Duplicate Persons as well as other things. So, I do these tasks on FTM. Together they give me more flexibility. But, I also own a membership on Ancestry so there are more records available to me than a free membership. Now for LEGACY. I, too, have heard wonderful things about Legacy. There are features with it that is not available on FTM. But, my downfall is that it does not sync up to Ancestry. So, for me there would be more work involved finding the records on Ancestry or FTM and then transfer them to Legacy. But, all of these mentioned have the ability to download and save various GEDCOM files so that you could transfer them back and forth between different software. This may be the option I use so that I can take advantage of features in one that is not in the other. You just have to maintain the two or three and keep them in sync manually. I hope I did not bore everyone with the details and I would be glad to help you, Joan with the scenario that you would like if you have any problems! FTM is my second choice but only because I was so used to it (had it since 2.0). If you're open to something new, Legacy is very good.
