Hi Everyone, I have an old version (7.5) of Family Tree Maker with all my info. I have a new computer that I will be setting up next week. Should I get the 2012 version? Anyone have it? I called and spoke to a gentleman at Ancestry and he told me that when I upload my info to the program it will be sent to Ancestry. Did I understand him correctly? He also told me that the new computer would not let me download the old program but would let me download the info from a backup flash drive into the new version. I could use one of the free programs but I would need to put all my info in and that would not be easy for me. Any suggestions? Thanks, Joan Grego
I personally much prefer Legacy Family Tree. I have had nothing but great things to say about them since I started using them about 10 years ago. They have at least five years hat I know of been chosen the best out there. I highly recommend!!! Is he saying that if you buy & use the program, that your data becomes property of Ancestry? I was thinking of getting it since they now have a Mac version, but I think I'll keep what I have rather than have them take my data! That's why I stay with Family Tree Maker 2011.... Do not want to share lots of stuff that I got for free with a company that will charge for it. My stuff is well sourced, so it would be easy pickings. If it gets where they force me to upload, I will go to some other program... Which brings up another question, for me, anyway. I also am using Family Tree Maker 2011, and I like it pretty well, although I have always heard rave reviews about Legacy. But, does anyone know what the CAPACITY of FTM is (and I am sure it partially depends on how many pictures you add (I add LOTS)). I currently have just shy of 2,000 people in my tree, and don't want to see it "blow up" if I add too much. Will it give me any warning messages? I bought a new laptop computer in 2010 and had to buy the newer version of FTM then. I don't like it as well as the old version, and can still use my old desktop computer which has Windows XP. My son helped me download it onto a thumb drive and was able to transfer the material on that to the new computer. You will notice a difference though in the setup. I think I noticed that Windows 8 will be out soon...if not already.
