You will never be sent a copy of the original handwritten act. It would be too hard on the bound registers to put them on a copy machine. And remember that these sacramental acts were written in French or Spanish, that the handwriting is sometimes nearly illegible, and that the pages are discolored and the ink bleeding through from the other side makes them very hard to read. I do think that the sacramental registers have been microfilmed, and maybe if you asked, they would make you a print off the microfilm. But actually, I've never even seen a microfilm reader-printer there. The problem with the handwritten certificates is that, in accordance with Archdiocesan policy, they don't include details like race and legitimacy, which ARE in the originals. At present, the Archives is only open to scholars, not to people working on their own family genealogy. But I was told that the new archivist is going to change that policy and let everybody in. The problem is where will they put all those researchers? There's room for one person to work in the archivist's office--the last time I was there they had to set me up at a table out in the hall. And who's going to get the books out of the vault for them? The only people available to do that are Janet, who handles ALL of the archives business, and Jack, the volunteer. This is very different from the Notarial Archives, which has a big staff and a research room with tables that is open to the public.
