When I was last in New Orleans in March, I searched the microfilmed records of Charity Hospital for 1833-1834. I was looking for the slaves of the woman I'm researching. To my surprise, I found no slaves at all, and only a very few free people of color, all of whom were from the North. Did Charity keep separate books for slaves, or did they not accept them for treatment? I also found very few Louisiana natives, although the book is a gold mine of information for people who had come to New Orleans from other states and other countries. The entries are quite detailed, giving name, age, race, occupation, place of birth, how long in the city, illness, and whether the person was cured or died. --- Carolyn Long --- carolynlong@earthlink.net
