    3. I had a similar situation. A natural female child [illegitimate] was born in 1877 to a daughter from someone who left town shortly after conception, never to be heard from again. By the next census of 1880, the daughter was gone but another daughter was listed on the census. That kept the headcount reported the same. I think this was not uncommon, especially if the mother died in childbirth or was a free spirit and the child may have even been given her name. My cue to dig a little deeper, was the "mother/grandmother" was beyond her child bearing years given the child's age. Later when the mother (who by the way was a widow before she bore this little girl) remarried, young Lelia is listed with her mother and stepfather on the 1890 census. Just one more "geni tale" for the book .
