It provided many options. I found it worked better not to get too specific and query on the last name. I was not as successful with all three names of a person. -----Original Message----- From: laorlean-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:laorlean-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of romayor2@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 8:35 AM To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] new search engine problem I agree with you Merle.? I'm trying to figure out which orphanage 4 children in the 1870's would be in (2 boys, 2 girls). My gg-grandmother's nieces and nephews were in an orphanage from around 1872 into the 1880's. The two older ones were with my gg-grandparents in the 1880 census (teenagers). I tracked down a cousin of the oldest boy and got a story of "the orphanage was across the street from where he worked for Mr. Spellman." The story is rather strange ....Nora (the person I talked with) is the g-granddaughter of John Nolan. He told her that as a teenager/young man he worked for a "nice Mr. Spellman" across the street from the orphanage who taught him math and gave him a job in his store. Of course the story could have changed over the years, but wouldn't he have referred to him as "Uncle Michael?" and not Mr. Spellman? Or was that a custom back then? Mr. Spellman was my gg-grandfather and in one c! ensus he is listed as a "grocer" and in the next as having a saloon in his house. His house was on Elmira street on the corner (forget what the other cross street was....Pacific I think?) Any suggestions where to look? Only the two younger children would have been in the 1880 census in the orphanage, so I was trying to track that down. Their names were Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) Nolan and Matthew Michael Nolan. Not at home to check, but believe Matthew would have been about 8-9 years old in 1880 and Mamie a couple of years older.
