Judy, The record is a bit hard to read. Give me some time and I believe I can give you the home towns in today's France (Alsace) for Jakob Gullung and in Germany (Württemberg) for Katharina S________. In the meantime, you might want to ask the List if someone going to the NOPL could check the JP marriage index for Jakob/Jacob Gulling. The license was issue 12 June 1856 by the 5th Justice of the Peace. The NOPL will look it up for a few dollars. The license MIGHT have signatures that would clarify Katharina's last name. Judy, I believe I have one of them for you. Jakob Gullung was apparently from Zinsweiler (Zinswiller) in Alsace. (It is Zinsweiler in German; Zinswiller in French.) Family Search shows quite a few people named Gullung from Zinswiller, which is in the Bas-Rhin Department of today's France. I don't know if it's your person, but Family Search shows a Jacques (Jacob) Gullung born in Zinswiller on 25 June 1834. This is the approximate year your Jacob was born. This Jacques/Jacob was the son of Jacques Gullung and Charlotte Breiner. His wife Katharine/Catharine S________ is proving a bit more difficult. She MAY be from Schwanheim in Württemberg, but I'm still working on her home town, as well as her name. In your message you said that you found three ways to spell her name in the birth records of her children. I may have found a few more. Jacob Gullung and his wife Catharine had at least nine children: 1. Marie Magdalene, b. 26 April 1857 (She was listed in the 1880 census by the French form, Madeleine.) Mother's maiden name: Schaber 2. Barbara, b. ca 1859 Birth record not yet found 3. Andrew, b. ca 1862 Birth record not yet found 4. Louisa, b. 2 May 1867 Mother's maiden name: Scharburn 5. Thereza, b. 27 Aug 1869 (She was listed in the 1880 census as Catherine.) Mother's maiden name: Scherbum 6. John Jacob, b. 1 Jan 1872 Mother's maiden name: Scharbel 7. Joseph, b. 16 June 1874 Mother's maiden name: Shaler 8. Amelia, b. 30 June 1877 Mother's maiden name: Sharber 9. Arthur, b. 23 Nov 1879 Mother's maiden name: Schaber Were there more??? In trying to possibly learn more about Catherine's maiden name, I looked for them in the census records. Can I assume you have found them in the censuses: 1860, apparently the Jacob Collin in the 9th ward 1870, as Jacob Goulong 1880, as Jacob Gullang By 1900 he was deceased and his widow was living with their son Jacob, listed as Jack Gullung. I'll keep working on Catherine as time permits. Norm --- Norm Hellmers <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com> wrote: . . . > The record is a bit hard to read. Thanks Norm. I did not know were in Alsace Jacob was born. Knew along that he was from Alsace and Catherina was from Wurttemberg from the information on my great-great grandmothers Mary Magdelena's birfh record. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norm Hellmers" <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com> To: <laorlean@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 14, 2008 9:59 PM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Jakob Gullung and wife Catherine Judy, I believe I have one of them for you.
