    3. Okay, so here comes the questions that lots of other people have asked and I didn't pay attention to... Girod Cemetery. Are there records somewhere? Are they accessible? If so, will they be likely to give me any useful/interesting information? This is my first experience with burial records as early as 1830. Is some death record a ridiculous idea? And, I'm just curious and wonder if anyone has thoughts on this. This ancestor was Capt. Robert M Davis at his wedding, Baltimore, MD, 1802. His whole family was military, so I assumed he was and got some very tiny, sketchy record, almost nothing, from NARA. But, by the time he was in New Orleans 1813-1815, and about that time discharged/released/retired from the military, he was Major Robert Davis. However, when he died, 15 years after that, he was again, Capt. Davis...listed in the City Directory as a 'sea captain' and owning or running a dry goods store at 19 Royal, cor. Bienville. Would the designation Capt. then mean, just that, that he was a ship's captain? What ship? I seriously doubt he owned a ship. Why else would he reduce the rank back from Major??? And if a 'rank' were going to be put on a headstone, why would you choose the lower rank?

    3. Cheramie, The records of the Girod Street Cemetery (1817-1930) are on microfilm, indexed by the WPA. These are available through any Family History Center. See this info: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titlefilmnotes&columns=*%2C0%2C0&titleno=246173&disp=Girod+Street+Cemetery+records%2C+1817-++ or http://tinyurl.com/25hr75 These records apparently include a combination of the information found on headstones and data from the original records.
