For her heroica.. and untiring efforts in the cause of the sufferers during the epidemic of yellow fever in New Orleans in 1877 she was highly complimented by the legislature of that state." I have found her name as Sister Monica/Monika and Sister Mary Monica/ Monika Am looking for 1860 &1870 US Census records, (1850 she was in Baltimore, MD) place of burial, and any other information that pertains to her as a nun, history of the St. Joseph's German Orphan Asylum, etc. Does anyone know where records of the Sisters of Notre Dame are kept (or the Orphan Asylum)? 3. Mimi, My grandfather and his siblings were placed in St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum in 1912, after the deaths of both parents. His maternal grandmother could not support them and she placed them herself. I won't go into the details of how many times I spoke to the Archdiocese about the orphanage and how many times no one knew what I was talking about. Until one day, I mentioned that the nuns were of German decent and a light bulb went off in someone's head. The orphanage was torn down in the 1930s to make way for the St. Thomas Housing Project and any children left were sent to Madonna Manor on Barataria Blvd. in Marrero. All records were sent there too! That's where I found the records for my grandfather and his siblings. Coincidently, I live and work in Marrero! This was back in the 80s, but at the time, the director was eager to help me and I have transcribed copies of all records for each child. They may also have records on the nuns/teachers. It's worth a shot! Also, at that time, the school my own children attended was, coincidently, in Marrero, was run by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. I talked to one of the nuns and she gave me the address of their mother house in Dallas (Irving), Texas. I wrote to the Archivist there and she wrote a very nice, long letter about the orphanage (she had been there a short while before its closing) and sent me copied pictures. If I were you, I would contact the SSND in Irving and see what they might be able to tell you about Sister Monica. I'd be glad to send you copies of the pictures of the orphanage. Hope you are as successful as I was!
