    3. You have brought up one of my pet peeves. What really upsets me in addition to that about Ancestry is that you put your info up there and then THEY make money from making it available to people. It is my work. No one has the right to profit from it other than me! And I give it away free to those who connect to my tree. I don't know what other resources are out there these days to allow you to post trees. When I did this many many years ago, it was obvious that some of these places would copy your data to CD's and sell them. AND that once that was done, you also had no options for updating and correcting your tree. For those reasons and because I am Jewish, I chose to post my data to Jewishgen.org. You have to register on Jewishgen to see it, but there is no charge to register. I can update my data whenever I like. And because you have to register, people are far less likely to stumble across my information and copy it into their database from the site. There is easy access to contact the person who posted the tree and that can be a blind contact, i.e., the person contacting you doesn't know who you are. So your privacy is protected and you can choose to share with whomever you like. I don't know if other current sites offer these options. I HOPE there ARE others. In doing so, I realized that Ancestry.com has a serious error in its place name database. When a person starts to enter New Orleans, the ?auto-complete? function completes it as "New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA." Because of this, many people have incorrectly entered New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA as a place name in their Ancestry Public Member Trees. When I discovered this, I remembered a query to the List about this issue over two years ago. You can see that message here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/laorlean/2008-03/1206055120 This mistake has obviously been going on for some time. I have notified Ancestry.com of the error, but to date it has not been corrected. In the meantime, people who enter data on Ancestry should be cautious about this auto-complete error, and should be cautious with the auto-complete function entirely, as I have seen many other mistakes made because of it. Everyone should also be aware that Ancestry family trees will frequently contain the erroneous place name of New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA. It should of course be New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

    3. The good thing that comes from having trees on ancestry is the contacts to relatives and the chance to indicate correct information. I, like Dee, am always willing, at no charge to share some of my source info. Also like Dee, I am working on a New Orleans Tree with some others, mailing because I truly believe that we are all cousins.
