When I go to New Orleans for research I'm usually there for a month, so my husband and I rent a little furnished house in the Faubourg Marigny. We never have a car. I take the St. Claude Avenue bus as far as Canal Street and walk the rest of the way to NOPL or the Notarial Archives a few blocks further on Poydras Street. This isn't the nicest part of town, not because it's dangerous, but because it's ugly. There must be parking garages, but I've never paid any attention to them; remember that you're just a few blocks from the Superdome, and there's got to be parking for that. You could also call United Cab at 504-522-9771. Put this number in your cell phone. They're great. They come right away and the drivers know where they're going. You didn't mention where you're staying--at a hotel, or with friends/relatives? If you stay at one of the big hotels on Canal Street, you can walk to NOPL and the Archives. There's also a Holiday Inn very near NOPL. There is a parking garage directly across the street from the library, with the Holiday Inn in the next block going towards the Superdome -- it is a little run down; however, after using it a few times these last couple of years, I can say that I have never had any problems.
