Bill, if your relatives do not respond to you, you need to pick up the telephone and call them. I wait a respectable time and then I call them to see if they got my letter and then I ask them if I can interview them over the telephone. Have your questions ready and don't ask too many too soon. You will scare them off. Tell them you want to keep in touch if that is ok with them and then wait a while and call back. Another tip is if you find a relative you don't know, write them a letter telling them who you are and what you are doing. Do NOT send them any photos in this letter.
