Back in the mid 1970's I frequently had to lay over in Los Angeles to get home to Grand Forks where I was stationed in the Air Force. At that time the Grand Forks library had a few items on the local scene but nothing in the areas I was interested in. I was just starting to research my family and would spend my layover time in the LA Library. I had no clue as to how to research my family and talked with the Librarian on duty. Mentioned my situation and asked him for some directions on Genealogy Research. Everything was done using the Post Office and including a Self Address Envelope stamped envelope, I am still waiting for my relatives to respond. I think all they did was float off the stamps and reuse them. The Librarian asked me several questions and one in particular referenced my Great Grandfather. All I knew at the time was that he died in Belleville, Illinois. Some 3 months later I received a copy of a full size newspaper sheet which contained the obituary from the Belleville Newspaper from June 1904, which contained the entire Obituary. I would assume that given the increased interest in family research since then that they have added quite a bit of information. At that time there were no personal computers, and the Everton Publishing Company along with the Mormon Church seemed to be the main sources for data and guidance. Things have improved by leaps and bounds since then. The computer I am using on this letter is frequently considered more powerful than what we had at NASA during the Gemini and Mercury Programs and it sure doesn't take up two floors of a rather large building in Houston.
