    3. The Conveyance Office is no longer in the basement of the Civil District Court next to City Hall. It's now in a tall, black marble office building at 1340 Poydras, across from City Hall. The Notarial Archives Research Center is on the third floor of this building, I think the Conveyance Office is on the fourth floor, but ask at the front desk before you take the elevator. I'm assuming you mean the old Conveyance Office Books (COBs), which go from 1828 (I think) to sometime in the 1870s. Note that the earlier records will probably be in French. These are HUGE books, weigh about twenty pounds each. There is nobody there to help you find what you want or lift the books off the shelves, and they don't even allow you to move a chair over to the table so you can sit down ("fire regulations"!). I don't think they let researchers put the books on the copy machines, and as far as I know, there's nobody there to make copies for you. I've always had to copy the information by hand--while standing up at the table. It's been several years since I've been there--maybe the staff has gotten more helpful since. It's a complete contrast to the Notarial Archives Research Center, where everybody is lovely. The more modern conveyance records are on a different floor. The only time I went there, I handed in my request slip, thinking they were going to bring me the book to look at, and instead the clerk came back with a stack of papers and changed me $20--and what I got was completely unintelligible legal jargon--useless!
