Renee: The article in Le Raconteur which contains the Cannes Brulees census is entitled "1795 Tax on Slaveowners," which extends over a number of issues. Since most, if not all, of these issues are out of print and this is a significant article (written by me), it will probably be one of the first we include in the Members Only section of our website (www.lecomite.org). I have been working on the content for several months now and still have more work to do. We hope to have it up and running by June. Members of Le Comite' will be sent a user ID and password to log on. The legajos (bundles) of the Cuban Papers are available only on microfilm. The largest sets are found at LSU in Baton Rouge, THNOC in New Orleans, Clayton Library in Houston, and UF in Gainesville. There are smaller collections at ULL in Lafayette and the Alexandria (La.) Library. As far as I know, none of them do ILL. You can hire someone to search them for you or pay LSU $20 to have them put one reel on their fancy microfilm machine which you can access from you home computer between the hours of 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. Aside from the handwriting and language problems, any one legajo may be on several rolls of film. And, there are various ways the documents are organized, or in some cases, not organized at all. Hill notes that 215 is badly disordered, though it's possible that it was put in better order for the filming. It's hard to generalize because this is a huge collection of over 1,000 reels. In 30 years of researching them I've looked at a good number, sometimes multiple times, but I still haven't gone through the entire collection. There's always something new and interesting to discover.
