Judy - It's a longshot, but if you have GenBank, check property transfers/sales. Sometimes the Notary is listed. You could search German names and there may be a common notary. Just a thought.... I also caught the part about the Connick ancestor working on the docks of the Mississippi in Mobile. I was curious about that myself. But I must say that I, like the Congressman, knew absolutely nothing about my mother's family when I began my search. In fact, I was given two incorrect surnames to search and didn't find out differently until after my grandmother had died. So it is believable that he had grown up around the dinner table not knowing anything about his family who lived and died in the same area. I didn't find that strange at all. I enjoyed both shows, but I really like "Who Do You Think You Are?" more. I look forward to more of both. Gates did say that Mobile was on the Mississippi and I wondered as well why the editors of the program didn't pick that up. Sure wish I could find someone to research my family as well. Personally, I think both programs made all the subjects look “naïve” if not outright dare I say it “dumb” ... especially when the prof., who always sounds to me to be condescending when he does these programs, had all the answers, which were quite limited in their scope. Yes, I know there are time constraints with programming, but please, I can’t believe the Congressman never had any family history research done or knew anything about his family history from family stories told around the dinner table prior to this. They continued to live in the area of Troy, AL. and I know my grandmother told me lots of family stories (some true, some embellished or outright incorrect) which sparked my family history interest and led me to find lots of information and hit more than a few brick walls. And especially troubling to me, was when Dr. Gates told Harry, Jr. about his g/g/grandfather’s job on the “docks of Mobile on the Mississippi river” ... at least that’s what I think I heard. This is a factual error which never should have been missed by the editors, Dr. Gates or Mr. Connick and made it into the final cut. Mobile is in Alabama, the Mississippi river is not. I’m going to watch the program again next time it’s on to make sure I’m not mis-reporting what was said. If I did misunderstand, I will let you all know. If what I heard was what I think I heard, I’ll forward this email or a version hereof to Dr. Gates. I like Who Do You Think You Are? better for entertainment value. But I will continue to watch Finding Your Roots, albeit the later broadcasts, because I love Once Upon A Time ... also a version of family history research, but more entertaining to me than either of the other two. P.S. Carolyn Long ... should I italicize the program names or underline them? Not sure why there was a big search for the birth certificate of John Joseph Learson - the ancestor of Branford Marsalis. Learson's 5 children with Myrthee Valentine are on the indiex NOVA put online from the State Archives indices. Could have gotten it in BR at the Archives. Gene
Cate It is available online for viewing - the one for Harry Connick and Branford Marsalis. I just listened to it and there is the "oops" you thought you heard - port of Mobile on the Mississippi River -- so inaccurate and incorrect. Gene
Totally, agree, Cate, no way Harry Jr did not know what 'privateers' were. And also agree that Dr. Gates is just a bit too condescending for me. But still enjoyed the program, cause I am addicted to history and genealogy. Not being a great allocator to time in front of the TV, I seem to have missed out completely on "Once Upon a Time." When is it on, how frequently, and what station? Thanks.............
