I would like to know about how to find a notary too....I have a cousin that may or may not have been adopted (obit says "adopted mother" in it). His mother died in late 1890's and he is living with someone who is not "family" in the 1900 census. I also have a receipt paid and signed by my g-grandfather for "room and board" on this cousin who was only a few years old then. G-grandfather lived in Algiers and was Irish. FYI >>> in case you haven't already found it >>>> The 1940 Census is now online and can be accessed at the website noted below for those of you who would like to revisit (visit) the past. http://1940census.archives.gov/search/?search.census_year=1940&search <http://1940census.archives.gov/search/?search.census_year=1940&search>
I am viewing the Louisiana 1940 census for free on MyHeritage.com. Easy to navigate since I am viewing St Bernard and Plaquemines parishes. Sally
I bypassed Ancestry.com and went to Archives.gov where you can search the entire 1940 Census. I have already found my husband’s family in Minnesota. It will take me a little longer to figure out Enumeration Districts for New Orleans, but I will, as time permits. Janet Baton Rouge

So does that mean Louisiana has now been up loaded? Did you find him on Ancestry.com website or some other website? Everyone: I found Al Hirt and family in the 1940 census while looking for my great-grandparents at 2273 N. Galvez. Can't find MY family, but I can send the image to anyone who wants to post it on any New Orleans genealogy pages? Thanks, Jeffrey
The National Archives had hired the company that owns Archives.com to host the images for them. Apparently, the entire system has failed - a huge public embarrassment! They couldn't even get images to load for the opening ceremony this morning. 4/2/2012 - 1:40 PM - Update: The National Archives had said it wasn't sure whether its computers could handle the load, and delays were reported. In Springfield, Ohio, Facebook user Val Lough commented on our page: "It's very sweet of them to put all of these records on line. It would be even nicer of them to make the records VISIBLE. None of them will download, I have a browser window opening that's 'loading' the documents and has been for about 20 minutes. You might want to find out what their issues are. It would be faster to mail a public records request to the National Archives." Many others are tweeting about delays. The National Archives says it is putting more servers online to handle the crush. (Hey, you've waited 72 years to see these records, so what's a little more time?) A time capsule from 1940 was opened on Monday at 9 a.m. ET, and we invite readers to share what they find. If you use the new records to find information about the loved or lost in your family, please post a note in the comments below or on our Open Channel page on Facebook. U.S. Census records for individuals from April 1, 1940, protected until now by a 72-year privacy law, are now public for the first time, revealing details about millions of Americans from that day, as the country lingered in a Great Depression, still a year away from entry into war in Europe and the Pacific.
