    1. Re: [LAORLEAN] 39 Levee Street
    2. Norm Hellmers
    3. Jim,   If you have a name associated with 39 Levee Street in 1811, you could check an 1808 map of the French Quarter included in the Historic New Orleans Collection’s online Vieux Carre Digital Survey. You can see the map here (it’s the top one): http://www.hnoc.org/vcs/more_maps.php?set=2 Levee Street (today’s Decatur) is shown on the map as “Rue de la Levee.” The map shows what are apparently owners of properties in the Vieux Carre.   Again, you might contact the HNOC to see if they can be of any assistance, however, don’t let them tell you that they can make a conversion from 39 Levee Street to today’s address. This can only be done from 1852 to 1894. See: http://nutrias.org/~nopl/facts/streetnames/namesa.htm   Norm ________________________________ From: Norm Hellmers <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com> Jim,   From the “Changes in Street Names” website published online by the Louisiana Division of the NOPL http://nutrias.org/~nopl/facts/streetnames/streetsl.htm it appears that Levee, if it was above Canal Street became today’s South Peters. Early maps also show a Levee Street below Canal Street, which became today’s Decatur Street.   Given the 1811 date of your record, my guess is that your Levee Street is today’s Decatur. Because your date is so early, I’m unable to make a conversion to a current address. My guess is that your address was in the first few blocks of Decatur Street below Canal Street, on the lake (north) side.   You might contact the Historic New Orleans Collection to see if they can be of further assistance.   Norm ________________________________ From: Jim McLoughlin <MCLOU@hal-pc.org> Could you please tell me where 39 Levee street would be today. Thanks, JM The Woodlands, Tx.

    3. Jan and List,   To help find the 1940 EDs in New Orleans, I’ve downloaded the 16 maps Jan referred to and placed them in a simple webpage.   Since the 1940 censuses are not indexed yet, someone can be found by their address. When you know the address, you can find the location using Google Maps or a similar program. A comparison can be made between the current map and the 1940 maps. The ED number can then be located. (All of the New Orleans EDs begin with “36-“, such as “36-251.”)   Note that one of the maps includes a listing of institutions that are included in their own EDs. See: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~neworleans/1940_nola_eds/d3_15_of_16_m-a3378-00024-00800.jpg   I hope this is useful.
