    1. Re: [LAORLEAN] Looking or Death Certificates/Records/Notices
    2. Kathy Cochran
    3. Norm and everyone, This raises an interesting question. My g-g uncle, Adam Born, died 16 July, 1883 in New Orleans, and had lived at 123 Dryades Street. Block 262. His brother, Jacob Born, and all his side of the family were buried in Lafayette Cemetery #1. But all Adam Born's family were buried in Greenwood Cemetery. But neither he nor his wife Charlotte Hahn Born (dod 2 Nov 1905) seem to be buried in Greenwood Cemetery. I have actually written a letter to the Greenwood Cemetery, explaining to them that he was a Fireman with the Hall of Jackson Fire Company #18, and that they all honored him at his funeral, but no signs of where he is buried seem to be found. Does anyone have any ideas about this? (I have checked Findagrave, as well.) Is this a case, perhaps, of sloppy record-keeping? It doesn't make sense to me that he is not there. I also have his obituary, that does not mention where he was to be buried. Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Kathy Cochran San Andreas, California -----Original Message----- From: laorlean-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:laorlean-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Norm Hellmers Sent: Friday, April 06, 2012 8:31 PM To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Looking or Death Certificates/Records/Notices Tanya, Are you trying to find where someone was buried in NewOrleans? Have you looked for an obituary? It says he was born about 1838 and was widowed. Let me know if you need a copy of this.   I believe the asylum was located at 1539 N. Johnson Street at the corner of Laharpe. In a 1931 newspaper article, it was referred to as the “Home for the Aged.” The building is still there today and can be seen on Google maps. I don’t know what it is used for today. (Anyone on the list know?)   I would try the Archdiocesan Archives. Perhaps the New Orleans records went there. You can find the Baltimore address and an email address here: http://www.lspusa.org/residences.htm which says:      For New Orleans home, contact:      St Martin's Home      601 Maiden Choice Lane      Baltimore, MD 21228      ph:  410 -744-9367      e-mail:  baltlsp@mindspring.com        3. If neither of these works, you could try the WPA index for the three St. Louis cemeteries. There is apparently a tomb for the Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Louis No. 1: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bobcrowe/3382561507/ and in St. Louis No. 3: http://old-new-orleans.com/NO_Bayou_Cemetery.html http://www.flickr.com/photos/wyldkyss/3019986433/in/set-72157608714334838/ I don’t know if these were used just for sisters or for the indigent inmates of their asylums.   If you haven’t found him yet in the 1930 census, “AndreCavalier” is included as an “inmate” of the Little Sisters of the Poor asylum. My money is on St. Louis No. 3.   Let us know what you learn.   Norm   ________________________________ From: Tanya <tanya273@yahoo.com> To: Norm Hellmers <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com>; "laorlean@rootsweb.com" <laorlean@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 7, 2012 9:15 AM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Looking or Death Certificates/Records/Notices Yes, I am trying to find the name of the cemetery in which my 2nd great grandfather is buried.  I have most information about his death but have been unable to find where he was buried.  Commonly, his name has been spelled in many variations throughout the years.  One spelling was Andre Magloire Cavallero.  He was born 30 Nov 1843 in Assumption Parish according to the Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Church records - Vol 6. Pg. 143.  Spelled Andrew Cavalier, he died 10 Aug 1931 in New Orleans according to his death certificate.  He was a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor in New Orleans at the time of his death.  I have contacted the Little Sisters of the Poor but was told they no longer have any of this information.  I'm also attaching a copy of the death certificate.  Any information found would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!  ________________________________ From: Norm Hellmers <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com> Tanya,   Are you trying to find where someone was buried in New Orleans? 3. Yesterday I contacted a cemetery in Chicago to ask about burials there. I gave them a name and they verified the burial and gave me the grave location. When I asked who else was buried in the plot, they refused to give me this information because of "the privacy act & identify theft". However if I could provide proof of relationship, then they could give me the info. When I mentioned that I could get the same info by visiting the grave, they replied that I could but they still could not provide the information. This is the first time that I have encountered this situation. Other cemeteries have sent me plot layouts as well as ownership information within the last couple of years. Has anyone else run into this situation? Is what I am being told accurate and true?

    3. Has anyone had any experience with this website? They say they can give me information on cemetery records such as: - Cemetery location and map - Index of burial records - Cross reference with SSDI - Cause of death and age - Photos and images - Full names and ages (including maiden names) - Names of close relatives and more! They offer a 7 day free trial but you are required to give them credit card info to access the requested into during the trial period. I am leery of these type sites, especially how easy is it to cancel an unwanted membership.

When you know the address, you can find the location using Google Maps or a similar program. A comparison can be made between the current map and the 1940 maps. The ED number can then be located. (All of the New Orleans EDs begin with “36-“, such as “36-251.”)   Note that one of the maps includes a listing of institutions that are included in their own EDs.
