    3. I empathize about the 40 years of research and can't crack the brickwall.  I have one of those lines, too.  I've been able to get back only to about 1800 on my maternal grandfather's lines.  It took 33 years before I had a breakthrough and was able to discover family information back to the early 19th century.  Four years later, I'm still searching for more and haven't been able to go earlier. Luckily on all my other lines, the families had been in North America about four hundred years (Acadian-French, English) and earlier (Huron Indians), with the Spanish and Germans in between, so it was easy to track them. I've also wondered if DNA testing would help track that grandfather's ancestors or heritage  but I've been reluctant to ask my male cousins to help and be tested. 3. Out of Africa, eh?  Well, duh!  Right? Now if they had said, "your ancestors were from the Garden of Eden, and this is exactly where it was (see enclosed map)", they would really be telling us something.  Correct? 150,000 years ago!   hmmmm Alexa Genealogy research since 1974 Ancestral hauntings - I ain't afraid-a no ghosts... -----Original Message----- From: Sally Viada Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2012 1:16 PM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] DNA ethnicity test Well, I did the maternal line a couple of years ago through Ancestry.  I know I have Spanish on my mother's line back to Graciana Solis, born abt 1751 in Cuba. 1. [LAORLEAN] dna testing
    2. I used familytree dna to test my uncle for both his male line and his mother's line.  Company is in Houston, Tx.  Have been very satisfied with their service.  They do give you info on 15,000 + years ago as well as 1 to 4 generations.  They do say that my grandfather's and grandmother's female line came directly from Africa,  They further tell you that the dna (male) line has a high incident of coming from the Great Britain area and the mtdan (female) line has a high concentration of that mtdna in the Scandinavia and Germany area.  In other word, my grandmother was a Viking before the female line migrated to Germany.  I do know that my grandfather's line was either from England or Scotland before immigrating to US  My Grandmother's mother was born in Germany.  The other thing I like about their service is that they have free projects you can join.  Projects can be on surname, country or county of origin, etc.  Very educational.  The projects track all members dna and mtdna and you can see how they compare to each other. Lots of military records including Confederate civilians who sold commodities and supplies to the army. Besides Ancestry.com, of course, genealogybank.com is my second favorite site, but this comes in as a solid third. All things that you would have paid much more than the $40.00 each time you order from the Archives. Pat In a message dated 6/19/2012 11:53:56 A.M. 2. Most definitely, worth the $39. I have found information to extend families that I would not have sent to the archives and paid the amount for. I have learned of deaths and burials of soldiers in the different wars. Of war prisoners, etc. So yes it is worth it. Pat In a message dated 6/19/2012 11:53:56 A.M. 3. Has anyone used 23andMe or My Heritage.com or any other services. My best friend has offered me for Christmas this year my DNA testing. Yes she knows it's pricey, but she wants to do it for me. And I just would like to make sure I get the most bang for her buck! I know I have Spanish on my mother's line back to Graciana Solis, born abt 1751 in Cuba. Her grandmother died in Cuba abt 1712. So I thought it was safe to assume they were from Spain. Graciana married Juan Ronquillo. I also come from Graciana's brother Joseph Solis. The results came back that I came out of Africa abt 150,000 years ago. Thought everyone knew this. Did I miss something in reading the results?? 3. I agree with Pat and others about now Fold3 (formerly Footnote). Not only does it have the wonderful military docs, but great big collections of city directories back into the 1800s. When I first subscribed in Jul 2009 it was $59.95. When I renew my Ancestry this year I will certainly continue to include Fold3. I also want to thank whoever gave the hint about adding the European segments on to Ancestry in monthly increments ... never thought of that before. Also I am a big fan of GenealogyBank. And recent threads have given me yet another winding road to use. My great grandmother's obit copies Evansville, IN newspaper. I know she was about 12 when she came to US from Germany, but have yet to determine her port of entry. I'm going to have to check out how and maybe find out why her obit or necrology notice was reported there. This bunch is just so smart and generous, it's a privilege to belong to the group.
