(Specifically for the Calaveras Genealogical Society, of which I am a member.) The article in question is Alexa's article about her friend that died, and using Ancestry to locate family members. 3. How wonderful you were able to help and I am sorry for your loss. Jan S - Orlando, FL -----Original Message----- From: Alexa Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2012 6:43 PM To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Subject: [LAORLEAN] Genealogy To The Rescue - Working with the Coroner A friend died yesterday in her sleep. She was the only surviving member of her immediate family. She was an only child, and her only child died last year. Her husband died five years ago. Her family was originally from South and North Carolina. We were told by the Jefferson Parish coroner that her body couldn't be released for 30 days unless we could locate a family member. It we wanted her cremated, they'd have to have all adult relatives okay it, per Louisiana law. However, if we left her with the coroner for 30 days, we could take care of the remains however we legally desired after that time. They wouldn't even accept her attorney's instructions without a relative's permission. So, being an avid, longtime genealogist, when I got home last night after dealing with her death yesterday, I dug out her dad's obit from 10 years ago. Checked the usual genealogical records for names of siblings and discovered a few family trees on Ancestry.com. Only one of several listed my friends' parents, while listing my friend and her son as "private - still living". I sent the owner of the tree a message through Ancestry and I received a telephone call from my friend's cousin this morning - less than 12 hours after sending my message! The cousin lives in New Mexico. Her cousin called the coroner, and everything seems to be taken care of. I spoke to the inspector in the coroner's office and she was thrilled I was able to help out so quickly. When I told her I used my genealogical skills, she said she never thought of that - even though her aunt is their family historian. Now my friend will be laid to rest in New Orleans with her loved ones in a timely manner. Looks like we need to spread the word about what we can do. It's not just our families we can find. We can actually be HELPFUL, not just nosy. <wink> Just thought I'd share. Amazing From: Alexa <kaseysworld2@yahoo.com> To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2012 5:43 PM Subject: [LAORLEAN] Genealogy To The Rescue - Working with the Coroner A friend died yesterday in her sleep. 3. Patience is a virtue.  We learn that more and more while awaiting the census releases and then waiting for the subsequent indices.  As a LONGTIME genealogist, I can tell you, the indexing for the 1940 census is going MUCH quicker than any of the others have.  It took a very long time to index the 1930 census for online searching.  We're lucky, more people are indexing for 1940 and we have more overseers (checkers).  Heck, I remember when there were no indices, and we had to search each little strip on the microfiche and microfilm readers.  Blah. I index what they give me, usually north Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois, and some others.. About Ancestry.com corrections, I've submitted probably hundreds.  While I can see my corrections and notations right away by clicking on the additions link, they aren't visible to everyone else for several weeks.  Ancestry usually sends me a "thank you" much later. I prefer the new way of doing it because if I make an error, usually a typo, I can correct it right away by deleting the post and adding a new one.  That way the typo doesn't go into the system as one of those infamous errors that people copy and reproduce millions of times.  Oy vey! I knew that I had eight corrections to make, and I just went to www.ancestry.com to make them. It was quite user friendly, and I see that they did not immediately go into effect. Do you know how Ancestry goes about installing the corrections? I had the last name misspelled four times, my father and brother with first names wrong, and my brothers born in the wrong state. Has anyone had experience with interacting with them on these things? Thanks, Joan

    3. I ALWAYS use the Advanced Search, as the basic search isn't compatible with many browsers. Even when using one surname, go with Advanced. Alexa

    3. No problem here, and I use the site everyday, including yesterday and today. The records are usually unavailable from 4 and 5 am every morning when they add new records.  Occasional power outages and bad storms can knock out the website, too. 3. I use familysearch.org. At this point they are 97% indexed and about 80% searchable. If it shows a state is 100% indexed on their map, it is usualy searchable within a week. Thare are 6 states that are 100% indexed and should be searchable within a couple of days. Martha Genealogy searches yesterday for who we are today. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sally Viada" <sgvjada@yahoo.com> To: <laorlean@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 27, 2012 10:13 AM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] 1940 Census I use the familysearch site to find persons in New Orleans..
