    2. Rik, Thanks for thinking of me. The Gregsons in Henry County TN don't seem connected. Your suggestion of Harry and Harry Jr. did lead me to understand that that family called Lillian by the name of Daisy, and also that the marriage of Lillian (Daisy) to Harry Sr. was her second marriage. The earlier one was to George Imholte, b. 1868. 2. Hi Norm, Even though I don't think I need any more for the actual book, I'd like them for my database if you have them to send. BTW I've gotten a high res version of the Survivors of the Battle of Shiloh Association. I was going to write you and tell you about it. Also I gave a seminar today in Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, and used that picture for my photo talk. One woman in the crowd told me that she was related to George Washington Jackson, the great great grandfather of the picture's owner Mary Miller. That is who I got it from in the first place. I am going to write her with this woman's contact information. George Washington Jackson is the man in the front row with the longest white beard, kind of in the center of the picture. Back to you shortly about Shiloh. Colleen In a message dated 4/4/2008 1:40:17 PM Pacific Daylight Time, n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com writes: Colleen, Do you still need photos? 2. Carol Hustus
    3. What if you cut off folks adopted into your lines and they just happen to have photos and information about your family? If we're just following the "blood", then why do we need to list "events?" Don't we also want info like military, education, travel, occupations....and family? Aren't we trying to fill in their life stories, too? Actually, I doubt very much if any of us have PURE bloodlines. Carol Florida

    1. Re: [LAORLEAN] Adoption & genealogy - and Catholics
    2. Kathleen Wieland
    3. My own theory is that we may find a higher incidence of adoptees in New Orleans families because of the ever-present epidemics that left so many children orphaned. I'm not sure about the other epidemics, but yellow fever (which remained a major problem in our city until the early 20th century) was especially deadly for recent immigrants. The role played by our Catholic heritage is not so clear, as I see it. Because the city was overwhelmingly Catholic, we did have large numbers of nuns - and they operated many of the orphanges and asylums. It could be that this helped more of the orphans to survive long enough to be adopted. But in 19th century New Orleans and elsewhere, the Protestant churches and Jewish communities also operated orphanages for their families. To weigh in on the main topic under discussion, I believe in tracking as many ancestors as I become aware of - whether they are related by blood or otherwise. As others have said, I am pursuing "family history" rather than lineage. I am as interested in the experiences of and influences upon my forebears as in their DNA. Also, I know from personal experience that we can always be startled by previously unsuspected stepfathers or extramarital conceptions. As far as my father and his siblings knew, their grandmother (Caroline Alice Yung) was the daughter of Louisa Drumm and her husband William Yung (Wilhelm Jung). My cousin and I were quite surprised to dig up the fact that she and her brother Albert actually were the children of Henry Voegelin (Heinrich Vögelin) - a man we had never heard of. I am working to find out as much as I can about this "new" great-great-grandfather. But I also consider William Yung to be an important part of our family tree. He married Louisa when her children were toddlers, and almost certainly was the only father they remembered. He raised and cared for them, and imprinted them with his values and customs. He was the grandfather that my grandmother grew up with. I do believe we have an obligation to make clear which relations are "blood" and which are adopted - when we know. I wouldn't want to perpetuate confusion, or defy the "blood" requirements of various heritage societies. But I also would never consider ignoring certain forebears because of these "technicalities." Kathleen in Connecticut, by way of New Orleans -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Jan Dean" <janvdean@earthlink.net> why are there more adoptees in N.O. because of Catholicism? 3. I'm afraid I don't. My Hill families moved to Indiana in 1860 and 1865. I checked Ancestry.com (I am not a member). I did find in the 1910 census a Henry C. 3. HI Craig, How very interesting that you have an ancestor that was in the Union Navy! My husband is a Union Navy Civil War re-enactor and involved with the National Civil War Navy Museum in Port Columbus, Ga. You might want to go visit that museum sometime to learn more about the Union Navy in the Civil War. Admiral Farragut's ship was the USS Hartford. It had a steam engine and also square rigged sails for back up. Do you know if your ancestor was on the flag ship or another ship in the fleet? 1. [LAORLEAN] Roll Call #2
    2. Craig Borne
    3. Hello all, I forgot the following family in my last post: Richard Edward Beatty was born on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico on March 3, 1842 while his family was immigrating to the USA from Ireland. I am not sure what their port of entry was, but Richard's obituary states that he was reared in Clinton County, Iowa. I have found no ship's passenger lists entering through New Orleans listing a Beatty family around this time, and I have yet to locate a Federal Census Record mentioning the Beatty family prior to 1860. An 1860 Federal census lists a "Richard Beatty", age 18, as a residence of Elk River Township, Clinton County, Iowa, and there is"Charles Beatty" in the same township, age 19. I believe that this Charles may be a brother to my Richard. At this point in their lives, the boys are living in the homes of other families and not with their Beatty family. I am not sure if this was just two boys venturing into the city, or something happened to the family, causing the boys to strike out on their own. 1860 BEATTY RICHARD Clinton County IA 250 Elk River Township Federal Population Schedule 1860 Federal Census IndexIA2319890 Richard enlisted in the Union Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. He was said to have been part of Admiral Farragut's fleet, taking part in the capture of Fts. Jackson and St. Philip. He was present at the fall of New Orleans and Vicksburg, although I have found no further confirmation of this other than his obituary. He came to live in Louisiana some time after the Civil War, maybe as early as 1866. There is a "Richard Beatty" listed in the 1866 New Orleans City Directory, and prior to that year, no Richard Beatty was listed. On To New Orleans: He married Johanna Ward Gray (who immigrated to New Orleans around 1853), widow of C.A. Gray, around 1868. Johanna had two boys from this previous marriage: George Gray, who was born on September 5, 1861, and John Gray, who was born on January 17, 1867. This information indicates that Richard and Johanna could have been married as early as 1866, but no later than February of 1869. Johanna and Richard had two children of their own: Richard Thomas Beatty, who was born on November 14, 1869, possibly in New Orleans, and Suzanna Beatty Phillips, who was born on August 19, 1872, in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. The obituary goes on to claim that Richard Edward Beatty was a life-long member of the Roman Catholic Church, so there must be some birth/baptismal records out there somewhere that I have yet to find. By 1870, the Beatty family had left New Orleans and moved to Amite City in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. They are present in the 1870 Federal Census as "Bates," but all of the particulars match. Richard is present with wife Johanna, as well as John Gray and a daughter, Bridget. This "daughter" is probably Richard Thomas Beatty due to the similarity of the ages, and the fact that the name Richard may be confused with Bridget if stated in an Irish brough. There is also a "Samuel" listed in the household, age six. My only guess is that this is George Gray, who would have been approximately eight years old. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. 1. [LAORLEAN] List
    2. mrszipp
    3. To anyone that may be interested. I have started my own list, but it take huge amount of time to do. If anyone would like me to forward them my file and you can add your own information to it and send it back. After that I'll find out where we can have it posted permanently. Only a suggestion - Bridgette mrszipp@cox.net

    1. [LAORLEAN] the rest of my adoption story
    2. Carolyn Long
    3. Yesterday I told the list about my adoption and the secretive attitude of my adoptive parents--by which I really meant my adoptive mother, Louise. I had been in contact with my birth mother, Marianna, since 1977, and had visited her and met my half-siblings (although Marianna was from Jacksonville, Florida, all of them had resettled in California). When Louise died in 1980 I finally told my adoptive father the story. He was so interested in it, and I gave him Marianna's address and suggested that he write to her. Pretty soon they were corresponding and talking on the phone, and eventually they met and fell in love. My 78-year-old Daddy sold his house in South Georgia, packed a few belongings in his car, and drove to California, where he and Marianna were married. Unfortunately, Daddy died of emphysema a few years later, but I think it was really a positive experience for both of them, and it certainly was for me. --- Carolyn Long --- carolynlong@earthlink.net

    1. [LAORLEAN] roll call
    2. RHB
    3. It would be nice if someone "out there" who is handy with formatting spread sheets could make a list of everyone who has submitted these names, arrange us and our names alphabetically and then post it somewhere... do we have an LAORLEAN website somewhere [Ancestry? Myfamily?].... that way it would be easy to read and readily available. Or save as a pdf formatted document which could be mailed out upon request. Or maybe someone might have a better idea of how to record and store all our names.... Renee

    1. Re: [LAORLEAN] Names ~ Trepagnier
    2. Hello. I see from the recent rollcall on LAORLEAN that you are researching Trepagnier. Do you have Norbert Trepagnier in this family? He was chief clerk of the NO First District Criminal Court in 1871. I am not related but am researching a family story involving a trial where he played a role. I believe his father might have been Norbert too. Harold Bradley Alamo, CA **************Planning your summer road trip? Check out AOL Travel Guides.
