    3. Two men booked in cemetery thefts Tuesday, April 08, 2008 By Paul Rioux St. Bernard bureau In a macabre twist on the rash of copper thefts that has plagued St. Bernard Parish since Hurricane Katrina, authorities arrested two men accused of stealing more than 200 brass flower vases from a Chalmette cemetery and selling them as scrap metal. "We've come a long way from the apocalyptic days after Katrina, but this is a sad reminder of just how low some people will go," Sheriff Jack Stephens said. The suspects allegedly sold most of the vases, which cost $600, to a scrap yard for $1.50 a pound, or about $25 each, sheriff's deputies said. Val Terry, 41, and Joseph Scorsone, 42, were arrested Saturday after sheriff's deputies found 98 vases in the back of Scorsone's pickup truck parked outside their Jupiter Drive home. The house is just a block from St. Bernard Memorial Gardens, where 223 vases were reported stolen in the past week, Stephens said. Cemetery groundskeeper Michael Kennedy called deputies Saturday about 6:45 a.m. after seeing a black pickup truck drive away from a spot in the back of the cemetery where several vases were lying on the ground. "I knew something was wrong because it's very unusual for someone to visit the cemetery that early," said Kennedy, who followed the pickup to a house at 3919 Jupiter Drive where deputies later arrested both suspects. Terry, who was found hiding under a bed, denied stealing the vases but said he had let a man use the pickup twice to steal copper, according to a police report. He was booked with 223 counts of desecrating a grave, which carries a penalty of up to six months in prison and a $500 fine for each count. Scorsone, who was booked with 98 counts of possession of stolen property, said he did not know how the vases got in the back of his pickup. A few days before the arrests, Kennedy had seen a man riding a bicycle through the cemetery wearing a bulging backpack. "We counted up the vases and found out we were missing quite a few," said Kennedy, who later identified the bicyclist as Terry in a police photo lineup. The recovered vases, which feature the names of the deceased on the bases, will be returned to their grave sites. Deputies said 125 vases remain missing and may have been sold to an illegal scrap yard in New Orleans. Since Katrina, St. Bernard has been hit hard by thieves stealing copper wire and piping from houses under renovation. "Thieves will target anything that is easy to steal and in an area that is for the most part vacant," Stephens said. "Who is policing a graveyard?" Vicki Labourdette noticed something was wrong when she visited the cemetery Monday afternoon to leave flowers for her father in an undisturbed concrete urn next to a crypt. "There's usually a whole row of brass vases right here, but now there's nothing," she said. "It's such a shame when thieves can't even leave dead people alone." . . . . . . . 1. Re: [LAORLEAN] roll call names
    2. Merle
    3. HHB, I think your idea for managing the roll call sounds workable and beneficial. You mentioned you thought names being searched only come from Louisiana. My gr grandparents came from France, Italy and Ireland and all came to and settled in New Orleans to raise their families. A suggestion would be when a name is listed to put where they originated from, i.e. Roques - France; Messina - Italy; Fitzpatrick - Ireland. but leave blank if you do not know where an off spring originated. like through marriage. 1. [LAORLEAN] Royal St. address
    2. Carol Hustus
    3. Hi Carolyn and all, My ancestor was at 134 Royal Street in the 1890-1891 City Directory. Has anyone ever got around to listing their street addresses for more information? I received 2 photo copies from Sally K. Reeves, archivist at the Williams Research Center of the 100 & 400 block of Exchange Place taken early 20th century. In the 100 block photo I can identify Hotel Monteleone, Dixieland Jamboree, Gluck's Restaurant and an establishment that looks like it's a seafood place, Koranica's? (1950-60s?) I also received an 1896 Sanborn Insurance Map, I think from Norm Hellmers. It shows Royal St. from 100 Royal to 138 Royal. Well, now I've answered my own question about first and second listings on city directories! (Guess I had a senior moment and forgot to look up what I had.) One ancestor had a shop then on 134 Royal. Well? Hmm? From 134 to 138 the Insurance Map shows an open porch with stairs going up to a second floor behind the Bijou Variety Theatre. So maybe Eugene SULPICE did live upstairs and not have his barber shop there or by 1896 he was no longer in business at that location. Parallel to Royal is Exchange Place and interestingly enough is great great grandpa's Model Shop. Next to the I.O.O.F. Lodge. GGGrandpa and his son made models for architects. They also repaired things like opera glasses and nautical equipment. Colleen looked at a picture I sent her and she "tsk'd tsk'd" at the deplorable condition of their dirty shop since they also billed themselves as "opticians!" :) Colleen, I wonder if you noticed that there seems to be a rather large Photographer's Shop on the second floor between 627-635 CANAL ST. I'm not positive about this because I'm not good at reading this Insurance map. I'd like to know if there are more pictures and maps available for the times and places my family lived in New Orleans. Where would I get them since I live in Florida and limited funds don't allow me to hop over to NOLA right now. The earliest address I have is 35 Galvez ST. in 1864. Carol Florida

    3. This is a great list. I haven't had much time for it lately, but have run into more difficulty finding the nearest lineage, rather than the past. I have lots of older info on the main lines. Broutin, Rochon, Cailleteau, and Pellerin But the 20th century marriages of cousins are not connecting so well. I am stuck on the lines around 1900 for: Family #1: Rosa Broutin m. Grisai, Ceasar (violin-cellist with Fr. Opera) 2/20/1884, had 1 dtr: Hadee (m. Fernand Geoffray, musician) = maybe had Rudolph, Adrien, Eustan and Emaze, (maybe not). My father met Adrien Geoffray in NO - maybe the Lake District - in the mid-fifties, "living with his father's sister", but we lost him again. 3 sons: Robert ( leader of Cosmopolitan Orchestra) m. Helen ? = ? children Barthelemy Edouard (musician with Robert) m. Alice Maillet = ? children. They died in Newark, NJ. Sidney ? Family #2 Norma Josephine Broutin, b. 1857 m. David K. O'Brien 6/30/1887 ( no info at all on O'Brien but marriage records = b. 1839) known children: David, born 1/1887, before marriage, died 10/5/1887 Louis Broutin, 3/14/1888 - nothing, but could have lived in Harrison, MS in 1918 re Draft Card. Norma died 2/3/1917 in Biloxi, MS, with a good obit stating her husband was Charles Roche leaving a son, Victor (b. New Orleans in 1892 - see below) and "little Evelyn". The 1910 census has her in Biloxi with "Louis Roche", a boarder Elizabeth, and Evelyn, 3 years old. Norma was born in 1857, so it's possible she could have had another child in 1907, but not likely. It could have been Louis' child, and he may not have been around for some reason - thus the sympathy. Speculation is dangerous! Victor, an oysterman on the 1920 census, died in Biloxi 3/1973, husband of Corinne Skinner + 3 children, Lucille, Hubert Charles and Lilly. I never see these names anywhere. I am looking for anything on these families - some of them would surely be alive now! And someone listed Maillet - the above Alice is all I know, and that's not much! Thanks for all you do, listers! 3. Hi Carol In what year were your ancestors at 134 Royal? Remember that street numbering in the French Quarter changed several times during the nineteenth century. There's a way to figure it out by using old maps--Norm Hellmers is the expert on this--but the further back one goes, the harder it gets. The numbers that are in use now originated in 1894. I THINK the first number in the nineteenth century city directories is the business, and the second is the home. Sometimes this is indicated by r. for residence or d. for domicile. Maybe your ancestor lived above his barber shop, which was customary until around the mid-twentieth century. > [Original Message] > From: Carol Hustus <maranath@embarqmail.com> > To: <laorlean@rootsweb.com> > Date: 04/07/2008 7:27:45 PM > Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] LAORLEAN Digest, Vol 3, Issue 140 > > Thanks, Carolyn! > Whew!
