    3. Volume 19 was published in 2004. It covers the years 1830 and 1831. Hurricane Katrina has pretty much put a stop to future publications for a while. Their next volumes were supposed to be a series of selected churches, I believe the Redemptorist Churches. Then, they were going to finish out the original series with one or two more volumes. Last I heard a few weeks ago, they are probably going to finish out the original series before they publish the special series. 3. Beth is in charge of the Vital Records and is referring to the New Orleans Justice of the Peace Marriage Records. State Archives has copies of those microfilms. They are labeled with the same V numbers NOPL assigned to them because they correspond to their card index. When you look up a marriage in NOPL's card index, it will give you only the V number and the date. The JOP Marriage Records are not the same as the notarial records you were asking about. 1. Re: [LAORLEAN] notarial archives
    2. Carolyn Long
    3. First, note that the word is NOTARIAL Archives, as in notary. Now, to answer your questions. I was at the Notarial Archives several days a week for the month of March. Finding things there is a challenge, but there are ways to do it. If you're looking for slave purchases and sales, Gwendolyn Midlo Hall's Afro-Louisiana Database 1718-1820 is extremely valuable. It's available online at http://www.ibiblio.org/laslave/. Unfortunately, it only goes up to 1820. If you're in New Orleans, you can go to the Conveyance Office, 4th floor of the Amoco Building at 1340 Poydras, right across from City Hall, and use the Index to Purchasers and Vendors, which starts with 1827 and goes up to the present. You can search for your party's name for each year in the index to purchasers and the index to vendors. They are roughly alphabetical--for instance if you're looking for Macarty, as I was, all the names beginning with MA will be in one section. There's a column for land (terre) and a column for slaves (esclaves) that gives you a page number in the Conveyance Office Books (COBs). Then you go to the COB for that year and look up the summary of the transaction. This will usually be written in French, but occasionally they're in English. It will tell you the date, names of the parties, price, and the name of the notary. If you want even more detail about the transaction, go down to the Notarial Archives Research Center on the 3rd floor of the same building. The people there are extremely nice, and will get out the books for you. But there are other kinds of documents in the notarial books that won't show up in the COBs because they don't involve the "conveyance" of property--marriage contracts, wills, family meetings regarding a succession, and many other things. But if you can get an idea of which notary or notaries your family habitually used, the notarial books do have indexes in the front. Anytime I get my hands on a book, I look at the index and often I find something I wasn't even looking for. Again, these are going to be handwritten in French, even during the American period almost up to the turn of the 20th century (unless your family were English-speakers--all the people I'm working on were French-speakers). The very oldest ones (before 1763) are also going to be in French, and the ones from the Spanish period (1763-1803) are going to be in Spanish. The archives staff will make copies for you for a dollar a page, and often I take these home to really pore over them and try to translate them. Now, here's the good news. When I was there the last time, I learned that they're scanning all the indexes and are going to post them on their website http://www.notarialarchives.org/. I'm so thrilled about this, because it will enable me to get my citations lined up ahead of time, and then I can go right to the documents when I get there, instead of wasting time searching. > [Original Message] > From: Cheramie Breaux <chamoo@cox.net> > To: <LAORLEAN@rootsweb.com> > Date: 04/09/2008 4:40:25 PM > Subject: [LAORLEAN] notorial archives > > List, I have some questions about the notorial records/archives at > NOPL. 3. List, If you haven't heard about it already, you may be interested as I am in a program set to air this Friday (April 11, 2008, 8 pm) on MSNBC. The 90-minute documentary deals with two people, both named David Wison, one a young black man descended from slaves, the other, a descendant of the family who owned the slaves. You can read about it here: http://www.meetingdavidwilson.com/ It will be first broadcast on MSNBC this Friday at 8 pm Central Daylight Time (check your listings). As the website says: "David Wilson, a 28-year-old African-American journalist, journeys into his family’s past to find answers to America’s racial divide. Along the way he meets another David Wilson, the descendant of his family’s slave master. This discovery leads to a momentous encounter between these two men of the same name but whose ancestors were on the opposite sides of freedom. Through DNA testing, David determines his African roots and returns to his native land." Norm __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 3. I guess I don't understand who the person is to contact who is doing the spreadsheet. If it is too much trouble to work with a spreadsheet, I would be willing to volunteer to do it as a word processing document, but I would have to let everyone know that it may take time. I just got a new computer and I am preoccupied trying to migrate everything from my old computer. Plus Friday I have family coming to visit and I will be "out of commission" for almost a week. If I do this I would need folks to send me their names [already alphabetized]. I won't do this is you all prefer to do it some other way. I just don't have the technology to do it as a spread sheet, but I think the word processing would work, if we just list folks by email addresses with their names below. I don't want to confuse anything, so if you all have it under control, just delete this. If you want me to do it, just let me know. Thanks Renee

    3. Wouldn't it be easiest to take the old spreadsheet and "revise" it? That way many of the names are already on there and there doesn't have to be much additional inputting of data. just a though.... peggy -----Original Message----- >From: joan_f_schaefer@sbcglobal.net >Sent: Apr 8, 2008 8:56 PM >To: laorlean@rootsweb.com >Subject: [LAORLEAN] Surprise Roll Call Spreadsheet - (i am tearing the inard out to get it to go thru as email) > >I am only getting through the messages about the spreadsheet through 7:15 last night.
