Hi Marilyn, One of the best sites about Bogalusa and Washington Parish I've ever found is this one: Bogalusa, Washington Parish, Louisiana - History, Photos, and Links: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcclendon/Bogalusa/ It includes the book, "Bogalusa Story" by C. W. Goodyear, pub. 1950, which is an excellent history of the area: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mcclendon/Bogalusa/Bogalusa%20Story/index.html You'll find links to her genealogy sites, too. (Give the pages time to load, they go on and on...and on. :-) Nancy Nancy http://www.thepastwhispers.com/Old_New_Orleans.html From: Marilyn Morris <marilynmorris@charter.net> To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, April 9, 2008 9:01:28 PM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Are there other web sites that would include people and info from other areas of LA? Her father was John Bunyon Talley. They apparently lived in the St. Tammany/Washington parishes. My grandfather was T. V. Peters from TN. He was brought to LA to teach and preach in the Episcopal Methodist/Methodist Church. We are told that Mr Bunyon Talley offered to provide room and board for a teacher/preacher if one would come to Bogalusa. We are also told that T. V. Peters was that man and that he preached his first sermon in a mill in Bogalusa. Over the years, he served many churches in LA and in TN. During their life time, Alleyna and T. V. (Timothy Victor Hugo) Peters lived in Rio, Sun, Bush, Covington, Slidell, Donaldson, Waldheim, Bogalusa and maybe many other communities in LA. We are told that he was involved in the construction of some churches in the area. Alleyna and Tim Peters had 10 children including my mother, Helen. Marilyn Morris in TN
I am assuming you are referring to the USGENWEB site. If you have been away for awhile you may have missed the news. But about a month ago Rootsweb moved over to Ancestry.com's server. And so many USGENWEB sites have been moving away from Rootsweb for various reasons. There has been a ton of debate about whether this is a good thing or bad and I don't intend on saying it is one or the other. I don't recall the new website right now, but I am sure someone will post a followup with it. Congrats, what a great job you did. Jan S - Orlando, FL
As I said before, the language of the notarial act depends on the language spoken by the parties involved. English-speaking people would go to an English-speaking notary and of course the act would be written in English. But the people I'm working on were all Francophones, so they would go to one of the French-speaking notaries. I knew that the notarial acts had been microfilmed by the State of Louisiana (the Notarial Archives is a state agency), but I was not aware that the films were available through the Mormon Family History Libraries. I've never used the FHLs because there isn't one accessible by public transportation in Washington DC, where I live. I don't drive. The NOPL has microfilms of the Conveyance Office Index to Purchasers and Vendors, although it's awfully hard to read, especially for the early years. Maybe the FHLs have that as well, but without going to the Conveyance Office Book cited in the index, you aren't going to get the name of the notary and you won't have the citation to the notarial act. The indexes to the notarial books just posted on the NARC website are such a fabulous research tool that will give out-of-town people access to citations. If you write to the archivist, Ann Wakefield (awakefield@notarialarchives.org) they will send you a scanned copy of the notarial act. It's rather expensive, and sometimes harder to read than the original if the paper is stained or the ink is bleeding through, but better than nothing if you can't get to New Orleans. > [Original Message] > From: Gene Hullinghorst <ghullinghorst@ameritech.net> > To: <LAORLEAN@rootsweb.com> > Date: 04/10/2008 8:52:40 AM > Subject: [LAORLEAN] Notarial Archives > > The early records in the Notarial Archives are probably mostly in French or Spanish. Dear Colleen, Congratulations! It is wonderful to read about all that you do. You have turned your passion into an incredible world of discovery. Your work is fascinating. I feel fortunate to have received some of your information over the years particularly about the Dowdalls. Beannachtai (blessings in Gaeilge), Margaret K.
The early records in the Notarial Archives are probably mostly in French or Spanish. However, I have worked with some in the 1860s and 1870s and the majority are in English. I did some research on Dicharry for a friend who lives in Atlanta now. I'll try to find what I have. Gene H.

I would guess the records from these closed churches are going to go to the Archives. I think the Archbishop is behaving very badly--after all, look where we got him--from Boston, after the sex scandals there. He seems to have no clue about New Orleans culture. Look how he tried to close down St. Augustin's, which is SO important to the community, and may succeed in doing it yet, because, with Father LeDoux ousted, there's not as much motivation to go there for services. But the folks at the Archives are a different matter. They're extremely nice. I just love going there. > [Original Message] > From: peggy <rooneytoon29@earthlink.net> > To: <laorlean@rootsweb.com> > Date: 04/09/2008 9:50:10 PM > Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Records of the Archdiocese > > Judy - > > Considering the Archdioceses' decision to close churches, do you have any idea what might be done with the records that the indivisual churches might hold? > > peggy > > -----Original Message----- > >From: Judy Riffel <riffelj@bellsouth.net> > >Sent: Apr 9, 2008 6:48 PM > >To: laorlean@rootsweb.com > >Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Records of the Archdiocese > > > >Volume 19 was published in 2004.
